| Black rock, just over the hill from St Claire. Just walk north from the parking area and swim off the rocks - Butter/blue cod abundant. Most of the other spots is off shore at the islands - Green Isaland white island. Shag bay and Karetane is also good, but about an hour's drive to the north. Call me 07 576 0460 |

It's called underwater hockey! :) On Thursdays and Sundays. If you ever come up north, I'm in Oamaru now. Dived Moeraki lighthouse yesterday and got a good haul of green bone, moki and paua. Would have been better if I did not have to spend 40 minutes retrieving my RA out of the kelp! Water was clean and warm, but that could have just been the new 7.5mm top! Saw heaps of kahawai and quite good sized salmon in schools. | Murdering beach, just north of Aramoana is a good spot for Blue Moki and Butters. A very popular surf beach so you would have to wait for the right conditions. Managed to dive there about 2 years ago and saw big schools of blue moki. Just a matter of picking out the big ones. Amazing sight with the butters flying around as well. Dive to the left at Murdering by the point which leads around to Long Beach. Great spot and lots of fun. Provided there is no swell like the day I went out, the vis was 8-10 metres and very fishy. Hope this helps. |

I was successful recently at Shag Point, just before the gate, to the left,, though the little picnic area. Just have a swim. Also out of the jetty, to those rocks, about 200m out, or if you have a boat, to Danger reef, about two ks out. Viz is amazing right now and I might try the Moeraki light house again tonight, if I can get rid of this stupid headache! Anyone keen? 021 026 26667. Hi there, Not in Dunedin anymore but as for some spots to free dive there were a few spots we used to frequent down there while at uni. Aramoana usually a good spot as is protected by the weather, shot some good size moiki and butters at various points along the left side of the spit. If you go through the kelp out a bit deeper is ur best bet, Cape Saunders also a great spot particularly for Paua and crays but also plenty of cod there too. And karatane also good when divsble plenty of fish just try different points around the peninsula |

The accident was just before Hampton, so we could not get past. I've done heaps of diving past Moeraki down to Dunedin and the Catlins, when I lived in Dunedin. Going to the Catlins with my sister in a month's time, so looking forward to that as she is bringing me a 90 RA with a reel so that I can get in the kelp:) ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

| The best fish and chips in the world at Hampden! Catlins has some good spots. Between Moeraki and Shag point is Katiki, which has lines of reef going out a long way - only ever paua dived it, but I reckon following those reefs out would be interesting. Slope point is a nice dive, if you are in the Catlins |

Moeraki lighthouse: Went out this morning: Viz a murky 1.5m, it looked a lot better from the top. Worked out afterwards (of course!) that the current that was spilling through the gap was taking the dirty, northern water with the current, exactly where I spent most of the time. I was in for about 2 hours and the tally as 4 greenbone, 4 moki, 1 trumpeter and 2 blue cod. I missed 2 more greenbone and 2 pulled out, the last one a really big daddy! Saw a few other spearos there and they got the same varieties, except for the cod and trumpeter. I LOVE my new thick top...

I've just built up another short gun and want to give it a test, which is not the same reason my partner has, namely a lovely picnic with penguin and seal watching thrown in. Met up with Sausage and went for a dive at the Moeraki lighthouse. Water was murky, with about 1m viz, with quite a swell. Even the local seals did not bother, but we were there, so went in. My first dive I saw Moki, huge green bone, red cod and terakihi. I went for the Moki that was solid, struck it well, just behind the gills and promtply pulled out, much to my surprise, as the shaft punched through. I missed two more Green bone and was successful with three more. The others all retired to the bank after an hour or so, and I joined them after about 15 minutes. I realised why the Moki pulled out: the flopper was flat at the end and not bent up slightly...sorted now! The gun that I used ws bits from old guns, shrunk to a 75, with a 16mm rubber taht I cut down - it worked fine in the thick kelp where the fish hide from the 6 or so seals that also call the spot home. SO the tally was 3 each for both Sausage and I.  Check the dirty water in the background. Sausage went there on Thursday, and it was a lot worse then. ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

hey guys i new to this forum here i have found that Wellers Rock has been a decent spot for me good schools of moki and few big big greenbone hiding in the kelp. Even had a short tailed stingray swim past me other day. Also blackhead beach is a popular spot amungest my mates alot of green bone moki cod and trumpeter seconds beach at st clair is also very good biggest moki school i seen there and alot of greenbone but have to swim about 200m out to find them Just wondering if someone could flick me a text next time they out for a spear i a uni student and so keen to get out more for some food. Hey fellas, Wondering if many people took advantage of last weeks fine weather?? I got out twice, went to shag point both times. First dive on tuesday at low tide was really nice, loads of small moki with and few cautious bigger models around, also a couple of butters were spotted but not shot. viz was around 6m. Second dive on saturday was again enjoyable but the swell stirred it up quite a lot. Viz around 1m but up to 3m in places. No fish were seen surprisingly but there were as always plenty of paua to keep us happy. Cheers    |

I hit Moeraki lighthouse, with a newbie on his first dive, so kept to the calm bits, to get him used to the water and diving. Of course did not see any fish, but a pretty dive though. After he went out I went into the current, in the gap between the islands. It was high tide, with a big surge coming through the gap between the island and the ridge and saw some good Greenbone, shot one, but pulled out and got another 46cm model and some paua. Viz was a good 4m, the best I have seen it there in almost 2 years. Was cold though, but then, what's new...I was in for about 1.5 hours. I was there two weeks ago and did not see one fish in two hour's diving, viz was less the 2 m ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

Had a good weekend diving with the flat this weekend. Hit Cape Saunders on saturday. Very overcast and it was low tide when we got there, only small moki and butters around as well as huge schools of yellow eyed mullet. So didnt spear any fish, but got onto some good size paua.    The smallest paua was 150mm with biggest being 174mm. Viz was around 5m, but the day was overcast, could have been 8m+if it were sunny. On sunday we dove Allans Beach, got out at low tide and again saw loads of small moki and butters. (forgot the camera) I shot two butters then set to work getting some mussels, another enjoyable dive. Are there any other students on here keen to get out over the holidays? PM me if your keen! Ill be keen to dive Blackhead but havent been there before so dont know where the spots are haha. Cheers

Blackead: Just walk to the left, as far as you can go, on the rocks, and try your luck! I have had success there: Paua, Greenbone, Moki and Cod - a few years ago though :) Contact me if you come this way (Oamaru) I'm going to give Moeraki a wirl on Sunday, weather permitting. Coutas love flashers..... And so do trumpeters.... We used to use them a lot down in Dunedin when we were chasing trumpeters, they couldnt resist flashers and a big burley trail.... Just watch out for the taxmen too...

Louis, The pin on the arial photograph under the lighthouse is exactly where we entered the water. The cove towards the tunnel is better imo, more fish, paua are in the shallow ledges all around the edge.
You need a 4wd to get down there as its muddy and the track has a few potholes.. You also need to ring the landowner as its private land and he runs wildlife tours down there. Hes a real nice guy though. If you dont have a 4wd or dive buddies you could PM your number and ill give you a buzz next time I go down there/ go for a dive in general?
Bluefox, may i ask where you were getting the trumps? Ive only ever seen biggys at wellers rock, but that was at 18m on scuba, they were massive, musta been 5-6kg!! Ive seen a few small (30-40cm) at aramoana but didnt bother shooting them? |

Have got them at wellers, shag point, danger, green island, taieri mouth, brighton, doctors point, karitane.... Usually see the smaller ones schooling with the moki and we would then start laying out big burley trail and the bigger ones would show..... Mate I dived with had a commercial mincer so we jsut used to throw all the frames of the fish we shot after filleting into it so we always had cheap, easy burley in freezer for the next trip. ------------- Yes its cold... no I dont care that you feel the cold easily... no we can't get out.... |

Moeraki should be good. Go to the lighthouse and walk to the end of the little peninsula. If northerly, go on the south or visa versa. Just hunt ipn the thick kelp or the weed line. Has been a bit unproductive lately, but you never know...Also give Shag point a go. Stop just before the cattle grid and go through the little picnic area to the rocks, following the path and the steps. Depending on the viz. Call me at 03 434 8833 or 02102626667. I went out to Aramoana today with my family. Not for a spear, but was awesome to see four sea lions. Keen to get out into the water but have to replace fins before I do... Anyone purchased the Omer stingray fins? Looking at the cutdowns for Dunedin-based diving given the kelp..anyone used this strategy or gone for full length?

Just kept my full length ones. I don't find that the fins are the hassle, but long gun or if you don't grab the shaft as soon as you hit the fish, to prevent it from wrapping around kelp. ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum, and thought I'd introduce myself and see if anyone is keen for a few dives now that it's edging towards summer (not that the wind is agreeing). I'm a student in Dunedin, and have done a bit of casual diving and spearing around Dunedin and the Catlins from boats and the shore over the last few years. But I'm keen this year to investigate new spots and tee up some more people to dive with, improve my diving and get some kai. Let me know if anyone is around over the summer. Cheers Ben |

Shag point, on a good day can produce. We had the SI champs there earlier this year. We all came out with a good feed. I come out with a feed from Moeraki, most of the time. Both spots have lee sides, depending on prevailing winds. The enemy is viz... ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

Hi PhilipI have a kayak set up for spearfishin and would like to venture further afield from my usual spots,Kaiks n the Cant penninsula,just wondering what sort of weather paterns make diving round the Mouraki area gd,I have some long weekends off work coming up over the next 2 months, so real keen to head south ------------- Per Mer,Per Terram |

There is a reef quite close to the light house, with kelp showing at low tide. Would be quite accessible from the Kaiks on the way to the light house. Also Danger reef off Shag point. I've has lots of success there including Crays and Paua. ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

| Hey Philip was at Mouraki on the weekend and i saw waves crashing over a shallow reef about 1km out from the lighthouse? Is that danger reef. Boats were fishing round it. |

No, that is Fish reef. Danger is off Shag Point, also visible ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

Went out to the Moeraki lighthouse yesterday. The water was like a pond, and not too cold (was 7C last time, a month ago)so we though we'll try the northern side, but gave up after about 30 minutes as the water was so dirty, with less that 1m viz. The other side was better with a hazy 2m viz. I missed a point blank monster butter and another legal moki, but managed to get a feed of butterfish in the end. Was good to be out, but can't wait for Samoa, next week... Eddie did Shag Point on Friday and got a good feed of butter and moki within 30 minutes, before the weather turned the water into a mess with no viz ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

| Nice, I took g/f out for first swim of the summer(ish) out at Murderer's beach. Very flat and much better viz than I was expecting. Got a bunch of Moki and Greenbone. Oddly no paua to be seen? |

Had a good day yesterday. My mate Jake rung me and said i had to get out of the library and into the water, I wasnt complaining. We parked up at shag point to see the commercial paua guys out there so we were a little anxious to see what we would (wouldn't) find. The swim out was promising, seeing loads of moki and paua and some of the best vis i've had out there, around 6-7m in places. We found a cod hole and went to work burlying up around 30 cod, of which we took 4 blue cod and 4 moki each and i got a bonus butter, before getting some paua and calling it a day. Mint dive and some good fish to keep us fed over exams. The smallest cod was 38cm with a few pushing 46cm Our haul  Southland trifecta, missing a trumpeter   Jakey (pauatits)  The fridge  |

Good haul guys! I had a brief dive at Karitane Sunday afternoon. 4-5m viz... a few undersize greenbone and moki milling about, I only managed to shoot 1 greenbone before it started to rough up. New to the forum I have only been spearfishing for about 18 months and am keen to meet up with other spearos in the area. Joe |

Welcome to the Forum! Check the Advice thread as there are heaps of pointers on there. I am in Oamaru, so dive Moeraki and Shag appoint mostly, but have ventures further South, including Dunedin. Nice stuff. How do you use burley when diving? I went out at Karitani Beach last night after work. Got a few moki and greenbone, and the 5 paua you're allowed each. Pretty g-times being able to dive in the evenings! |

Nice work!! Yeah loving the long evening down here ay! Um burley when diving is just smashing up kina in a spot where you can easily find again, swimming away for a few minutes and coming back to. Dont do it often down here as i never find many kina but on monday there were heaps and obviously worked to pretty good effect! You could also save paua shells n guts/ fish frames from previous dive trips but thats a bit too much effort for me haha

Waited all week, while the seas were flat and there was no wind, for the weekend. Then on Friday night it was windy and rainy. Guts. Still went out on the boat on Sat, but it was pretty murky. Found a moki hole off Murderer's beach though and got this 55cm Moki. Yahoo.

Did Shag Point on Sunday. Viz was an amazing 5 m Got a feed of butts and lost a Moki. Missed a MONSTER butter at point blank. Still can't believe it! Would have been a PB. Kelvin went out to Danger reef and got Moki. ------------- Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;) |

Is anyone in Duns going for a dive this weekend? I'm aiming to go out Sunday. Will decide where closer to the time. Tossing up Akatore (Just past Taieri Mouth, I've never been there before), the Mole, Seconds beach or Karitane depending on weather and etc. www.marineweather.co.nz shows that the swell on the east coast drops away on Sunday. Let me know if you're interested in joining/carpooling |
