Hi guys, Before I part with my hard earned cash would some of you experienced jiggers like to give this newbie some of your knowledge? How would you rate/compare JM rods as opposed to Xshuga? Any pros/cons for either - also spin as opposed to overhead. I was a die hard overhead bloke, but soft baiting has made me appreciate spin reels a lot more. Cheers JJ  |

If you haven't done a whole lot of jigging do a charter first. Boulder Guiding is a great place to start. Xzogas are a tough rod with a slightly faster action. JM's are NZ's topselling high end jig rod and where I started when I bought my first rod a JM 350 and I still love it. There are a heap of others, smiths, jigstars, Synits, Power jig, Shimano has a range from budget to high end etc etc etc..... Depending on where you gonna be fishing, I would reccomend probably a Jigstar 350 as a good place to start because of good price pointing, strong forgiving blank, the ability to handle 300 to 400gm jigs nicely (which are the most used weight). This rod will handle offshore locations like White etc but will not totally overgun you either. Pair it with a saltist or if you want to spend more the options are extensive. If its spin ya like well...... I really like the Smith AMJ's, these are top dollar though. No Spin Jigstars around yet to my knowledge.. I have a monster mesh in spin which I like too..... |

Depends where you fish,and how much you will be doing.
If you are in the BOP I would recommend 350g+,400-500g even better with 80-112lb braid and some stopping power with it,to start with..you must be able to put heaps of pressure on these fish to turn their heads before they get to the bottom.
If you are going to fish regularly then go for a better quality setup from the get go,infact do that any way because it gets addictive.
In regards to JM rods I have 4 Powerspells,they are great rods.

I do like my jigrex 400, but i am look at jigstar 300

Same Question as Jiggy Jig have an Offshore 850 spinning reel spooled it with 24kg suffix rainbow braid 600mts braid plus backing. Not sure which rod as there is so many out there now. Would also like to use it for deep water fishing, 100 meters drifting over reefs live baiting stray lining etc. Used to catch Kingis Jigging with a basic boat rod 30lb line and 4/0 penn senator reel biggest was 18kg. | take all the good advice from above go to a good retail shop put all the above mentioned rods one side , put a reel on them and have a pull on each in the shop.better still try to fish with as many differant brands as possible be it through friends/charters etc then you decide ........enjoy . |

stay away from Tica jig rods I got one for my light jigs up to 150g that was fine till a 3 mt thresher tail woped my 100g black majic jig 10 min into it the rod just popped spent the next 45 minuits chasing it in the boat winchin it on the reel

| Just bought a Jigstar 350 from yeehaa this sat, blooded it at leigh on sunday, 8 kings, unfortunately none legal, the action of it is way better than my monster mesh that i have been using and heaps of power in it, slight issue with the top guide, think it might have been a bit dodge as it popped from the mount, good thing about buying local with support took the rod back and spoke to Chris and tony will have it sorted this week for the epic trip next week, no dramas, would definitely highly recommend them! |

Bloody Easterly wind  .Talking of 3 m Threshers, my wife got smoked by what was presumably a shark, on her Lucanos gear. It gets bigger everytime she recounts the tale, so she is a real 'fisherman'!
