Thought I would put together a bit of info onto the sight that has been happening in Waihau Bay. The only Pelagic weighed was a 60 kg yellow fin caught during the Waihau Bay Tuna Competition. There have been a few reported hook ups on marlin but none landed as yet. One boat went out and had a marlin take a lure four times, swim off let go, and so on. The skipper called it a 200 kg plus fish but not good enough to say black or blue. Small coke bottle size Albacore and slightly bigger to be had.
Off Te Kaha over the weekend at Patuwahine there was a Kahawai work up and two good size marlin seen beating up the school of fish. The call came over the radio as no one had any game gear. One of these was also called as a blue.
Whakatane has produced some good tuna from the back of Whale between 1.5 km to 5 km out. Four from high 50’s to 78. These are massive fish and merits to the anglers and their crews. This was before the sea temp started to drop, it has come back several degrees, now around 18.5 degrees. A lot of Dolphin activity and Albacore with the odd good size Skipjack thrown in. Several marlin hooked but nothing weighed, one marlin is swimming around with a Trophy Deep Purple as dental floss the first time the lure hit the water then gone. (Great for the lure manufactures) The angler was back on the phone ordering another one while still out on the boat crying. Marlin reported to have been seen at the Paragon, back of whale and in the trench (Eastern Arm) in the last week.
In the lure front I have added a lot of new skirted lures to my range and placing the skirts on the majority of my heads. I will look at updating the season as we go, I will post when the first blue is landed and the catches from Waihau Bay and Eastern Bay as I hear them. Tight lines and all the best for the game season. Derek at http://www.trophylures.co.nz/ - Trophy lures

That varient is indeed Gaybob. Now I'm on a better monitor I can see the lilac stripes on the outer. God knows how this is supposed to look like a flying fish.
Blue/white/silver/pink in varying amopunts would have to be one of the most consistent combos around. I can do about twenty variations on the theme and would never have a spread out without something along those lines.
In fact I was talking about our upcoming trip to Waihau and said I would do some of the lures and I stroked my chin and thought that making up some more in this proven colour combo would be an essential. Now just to chose the heads............

Update for today
Floppy on Blue Leda went out of Whakatane first starting behind whale but the best temp he got was 17.8 and the further north he went the colder it got. No sign of birds, bait or fish. He then went down off the Motu and found bait in 100 to 110 metres but all down deep and the bird life was better but not the greatest, again the deeper you went the colder it got all around 18.5. Went to the hot spot on the SSTT map off Opape (between Opotiki and the Motu) where they found the best temp 19.2, had a rigger pulled but and albie or similar with nothing else seen.
Cruised back to Whakatane and in 30 metres of water off Ohope found schools of Albies coke bottle size, these were amongst juvenille king fish. Alot of bird life and surface activity but no apex preditors to be had.
Dave on Backinblack went out 19 miles 1000-1500 mtrs off Waihau to get good water with 21.7 the best temp. Plenty of bait at 300mtrs. Roll in the warm water and we can get going.

I had 20.2 off the Motu last Saturday. It was just below 18 when we left Whakatane around 0800 hrs. There was bugger all activity anywhere apart from the three trawlers that were working over the 50 metre contour line. We ducked in to 30 metres for a bottom fish and picked up some Snapper for dinner then trolled back and only picked up one big fat skippie for our trouble. We did get a strike from a small Mako on a Rapala that we were dragging but it spat that out pretty quick and just left a bunch of new scratches all over that lure.

Did get a feed of undersize gurnard the trawler was throwing away. damn shame.

On my first day big game fishing this year, I went to Waihau Bay for 4 days, I was lucky the marlin had just turned up. While I was there, I tagged & released a striped marlin est weight 120kgs on our friends boat (Runaway Kat) took aprox 20min. Saw free jumpers, lots of bait fish, temp just over 21c.On the last day Runaway Kat hooked to a big blue!!, I was about to go over to help them, but they lost it just before I was going to jump ship. Going back on Feb 1st for 8 days
