Waiheke
Auckland, New Zealand

ok im sticking my neck out here to get rung.....
lets see how this go's...

Kingfish, Harpuka, snapper that you think started coming on the bite with a vengeance, not 3 or 5 fish but a good quantity and what time it happened and when it stopped.....
Game fish, any Marlin or Yellowfin what time they hit, knock down or landed.....

Highlighted in Red and bold is the time to be at your fish spot to start fishing...
"           '   "      "    but not bold is another time you might like to try....
Bold and in Blue is the phase of the moon...

PM to me via BeachedAsBro

Hi mate,

your bite prediction for this morning was bang on. We fished off park point from crack of dawn for 2hrs. Steady flow of fish in the 40-50cm range. Kept only the males (6 in total, although one was female). Released about the same amount again that I thought were female and dropped a few too.

thanks BeachedAsBro.

report from Tugboat....
Quote..
BITE TIME, was 9.40am for us eric, (you had 7.30am down as bite time)

9-40am on a new moon is interesting, reason the moon continues to climb into the sky which should put the fish off biting....
ive found it takes about 3 hrs from specified time for the effect of the moon to come fully into force an shut the fish down.....
im not say that if you happen to drop a delicious morsel of something in front of a fish it will not eat it, that will happen,
its like being handed a chocolate cake after your meal, you are full but cant resit.....
but normally by this time the fish have had there fill an will settle down till the moon is on the descend an starts to dip below the horizon...

so i hope this is has got you thinking, an slowly together we will get it sorted....
they are not like us when it comes to sitting down an having a meal morning lunch an afternoon we need to think a little different when it comes to catching fish....

report from Boulder.
Jigging forum...
Quote..
Moved a few times to fresher sign Lethal but we could have done it easy on one drift.
Your bite time prediction for the day was pretty spot on 9.30 ish and lasted a good couple of hours

a little incite into jigging, this is one form of fishing that can have a different effect on a fish...
the reason is your acting on the fish's natural instincts...
in the world they live in, acting wounded your dead meat...
hence a jig comes into this category so do the odd Softies which imitate a wounded fish plus of coarse a livebait with a hook in it....
so when the going gets tough sometimes changing your approach will help....
thinking outside the square can prevent that odd Zilch trip when nothing is in your favor....

Sarurday the 19th

Was drifting by 0530 and got one of the the first drift. Shifted a few times but there was very little sign. Never really had a 'bite' to speak of..... pretty baron. We tried bait, softies, Lucanus' and jigs..... nada, zip, zilch, zero.....

We didn't do an exorbitant amount of moving as the forecast 10-15knots from the west turned into  20-25 from nearthy the south by 0900'ish and it was quite snotty. it was one of those morning where you just wish ya had 15kg's of berley so as to execute a complete change of plans. BUT, in saying that, if a plans made, stick to it.

It may have had something to do with the two longliners and a seiner that were working the area when we got there.

Eric, appreciate you taking the time to put this info up mate. During the xmas break i will be working the shallows hard as there will be alot of boat traffic up my way. So i will let you know how i get on.

Marry xmas to you and yours mateThumbs Up

Went out of Mahurangi lastnight with Fisher in the baby stabi. Too blowy to go far out so fished the saddle. Nothing really on the bite until about 8pm till about 9:30. Just smaller fish but your bite time looked to be pretty accurate. The new moon was well up and visible and the tide running slower as they came on the bite.
Just seen this thread and will try to update to it when I can. I reckon this is a sensational idea mate.
Nice one!

lethal, your bites are pretty good, still think the tides are having an influence
looks like the high tides are more influential with the current moon phase, with the reports that have come in so far ,so will be watching with interest and will pass on any bite times i get over the season.

good one.

Saturday 19th

Fished landbased at the top of Coro from about 1pm until around 6pm. Fishing was extremely slow. Was targeting kingies (hence fishing over the low through the afternoon) and didn't see one cruise past the ledge which is a first for me up there. Was pretty much impossible to catch a livebait despite the schools of up to 20 KY swimming past the ledge all day long. I think this at least fits in with your prediction in the sense that we got nothing whilst fishing outside the predicted bite times.

what ledge were you on BeachedAsBro?
did you land on the souwest corner or the other end which faces the Pinnacles?
one end or the other can be mean depending on the tide, most times you want the tide running onto the ledge, the end facing Channel is better on a out going and the end facing the Pinnacles is best on a incoming...
now your going to ask me how would i know? i used to spear the buggers so new where to find them on any given tide.... i had a hell job landing any on the out going as the reefs are right around that corner even when fishing in a boat... LOL...
i suspect they have had a bit of a hiding lately as well...
my thinking is find yourself a nice quite bay a little further along the coast and burley up some squid when the going gets tough like that and take em out there, fresh dead or alive they are like lollie pops to a King.... or even netting piper in the corner of Fletchers right hand side after youve thrown some bread out, wait 1/2 an hour and you should get them we did early or late evening...
also found the week before the full moon is better or leading up to or even the day before its full....

Was fishing the loafs - westerlies blew up pretty hard on Saturday and made fishing anywhere else along that coastline pretty much impossible. I generally find the kings will turn up and harass whoevers in the berley anywhere 2 hrs either side of the low along there. Just there wasn't even a baitfish in the bloody berley on Saturday - VERY strange indeed as I usually throw in a berley when I get to the ledge and by the time I've set up my rigs there's baitfish everywhere.

Moonrise  6:58 AM NZDT, Moonset  9:58 PM NZDT
crack of dawn 7-00pm

Fished 24mtr drift off challenger area (Kauwau). Bite time for us was 9-10.30am on softies (which comes under the dying fish category rather that feeding time), a boat was fishing the area when we arrived on bait and they left while we were catching them (and did not appear to be geting them)? My son got 2 over 60cm and most were 40-55cm (rod holder was not working an sb's had to be moved constantly off the bottom to get hit). Moon had been up for 2 hours.

8-00am

Fished 30-32m mark about 6km north of rakino today and was out there from 6.30am with the first fish landed 7.55am and 40cm. Steady bite until about 10.30am when we called it quites with a dozen in the bin and about the same released. Not big fish by any means but good eaters in the 40-50cm bracket.

Heard the round stone on the radio a few times and sounded like he was banging a few too but a reasonable distance from where we were.

So lethal your bite time was pretty much on the mark today that is for sure. However I didnt really fish outside it to prove that it wasnt just going off all day

Hi nick, yeah all good man the moon sets at 9-15 hence the 3 hrs before start....
its a indicator of about when it will start, and due to the moon setting not rising could go on for sometime if your doing it right...
no moon fish bite...
they bite best as its just starting to go over the horizon....
if the moon had been rising i would have given it no more than an hour after it had risen as this is what shuts them down...

moved a couple of miles nrth of anchorite 2 a nice rock around lunch time, no current here and absolutely loaded wif sign again manged 6 or 7 nice nodders but lack of current it just stalled short drifts all round. Im pickin a big 20 gonna come off this one...

Really struggled this morning on one of my most productive kingfish ledges. In fact, first time ever that I have not even seen a kingfish there so as you may have guessed, we didnt catch any either.

Couple of things that stood out for me today was the complete lack on baitfish and a good but short snapper bite around 7 to 7.30am.

In respect of the lack of baitfish, we only saw a couple of KY all day and hardly any of the usually ever present maomao. I checked my fishing diary and I fished pretty much the same moon phase at the same spot on 7th Jan this year and had a similar result with hard any bait around but we saw 1 king and we caught it on a skip bait around 9.30am. I also fished the same spot on 22nd December 2008 (ie two weeks earlier than the 7th Jan visit) and had same 10am low tide but opposite moon phase ie third quarter. On this day we had baitfish for africa, saw alot of kings and landed 1 good king at 8.30am and picked up a reasonable snapper of 6kg (8am) whilst trying to catch livebait.

Going back further still to Feb 2008.....on the 2nd of Feb we had a low tide a 10.14am and 3 kings landed on the rocks by 9am...again third quarter moon phase. Fished the same spot again on 16th Feb and this time saw the most kings I've ever seen at the spot but struggled to find any livebaits and only got one king on a cast piper...moon phase was 1st qtr approaching full. Same as what we had today and also on the 7th of Jan 2009. Looks like I am learning something here lethal and hopefully this info is of use to you.

Btw, pulled the pin at 1.30pm today as we dont usually do to well on the kings at this spot during the top of the tide and the sun beating down was making things a wee bit warm for my liking.

Lethal - Had a big day out from Omaha on the very tidy new 6.1 centre console Extreme on Saturday. Caught B-all from 8am thru to 4pm and fished right up to Pakari. About 4pm it went off as we drifted outside Leigh reef and back towards Tee pt on our way home.... Bite seemed to slow about 5pm and we called it a day as we'd enough fish and had (quite reasonably) run out of liquid refreshment. 7" Lime tigers and chooks were doing the damage and while no 'Bears', some great eating fish up to around 3-4kg hit the slurry. Been a while since I'd dived Leigh reef but it was mint - heaps of Kings and a few bugs in some old possies. Great day out.

Thanks for that Grunta you did excellent...
ive noted the fish started biting on possible the movement of the tide more than the Moon...
i think this will happen at times when the moons not far away to rising as its a perfect feeding time for the fish... and certainly the bigger tides are getting them all fired up...

Launched 1pm and had couple pannies in bin by about 1.30pm. Jigged 2 til 4pm with hookups throughout the period and 5 kings landed. No clear bite time for us as we only fished 1 til 4.30pm and had fish all but for the last half hour when the wind picked up.

this is slowly coming together... thanks guys.... hopefully we can make some sense outa this and make the follow months bite times a little more accurate.... an so on till we have a comprehensive set of bite times, plus im sure it will change during the seasons as the fish move to deeper water...
but im picking we will have a lot better winter this year as we have a few more outer spots to the find them now.....
hell i dont want to wipe out the population but we just might make it more affordable to catching a few...

Thursday Snap report Quote:
Fish were biting intermittently from 6pm till 9pm so the bite time is opening up in the Rangi (got 10 snaps for a feed all over 42cm). All colours were working (Gulp Limetiger got he largest at 58cm). Black and white, Blue pepper neons also working. 2oz was needed with a fast drift (high tide was 2.30pm so at least we had wind with tide).

same as Pickles that evening bite before dark with no moon is all good....

Given that one off load from a commercial boat is probably more than our annual collective catch I doubt we are going to make a difference

looking out for that middle bite is the one i need now...
it maybe when the tide starts coming back in around 2pm there could be another short bite...

Hey Lethal. 14 Jan - Gave the evening bite a go, fished from 4:30pm through to about 9pm around Rangi channel and several spots along the east cost bays. 1 small random snapper but other than that, hardly even a nibble. Was a mouths firmly closed night.

same day 19th Powerspell an Deltadreams crew all had similar results with bite times starting an ending 5-30 to 7 or 8am, fishing still hard but feeds can be caught if in the right area....

as the incoming tide go's further into the day and the rising moon is staying with it the current is going to drop off...

the channels are your best bet as here is were you will find some movement, so its going to get harder not easier, sorry guys but that's how it is....

25th onwards if you can find some current, better tides as of the 28th it will be go time an about time, so hold those horses until then if your waiting for it to improve....

Hey Lethal. Still following your bite times. Been up Toots for a few days, as follows

Sunday 2010-01-24
Moonset 12:11 AM NZDT, Moonrise  2:38 PM NZDT
High Tide:   1:54 AM NZDT   2.6
Low Tide:   8:03 AM NZDT   1.0
High Tide:   2:18 PM NZDT   2.7
Low Tide:   8:33 PM NZDT   0.8
last of the out going morning all of the incoming...
hard fishing not a lot of current...

Seemed spot on. Fished from about 7:15am through low and then the incoming. The last of the outgoing was quiet but we nailed them from about 8:30 am onwards and left them biting with no room in the bin at 10:30am. Worth noting there were workups galore but we founds some spots holding snapper too and they were biting hard there too.

Monday 2010-01-25
Moonset 12:47 AM NZDT, Moonrise  3:45 PM NZDT
High Tide:   2:44 AM NZDT   2.6
Low Tide:   9:00 AM NZDT   1.0
High Tide:   3:10 PM NZDT   2.7
Low Tide:   9:26 PM NZDT   0.8
last of the out going morning all of the incoming...
hard fishing not a lot of current...

Tried to repeat the previous day but with a slightly later start for the incoming only. Same spot, first drop... bang! Then it went quiet. Although it was kids only day today and so we didn't work too hard and I think would have got some more if we'd worked harder. Noted that it was bright, flat, sunny day with no birds working, and the previous day was overcast, windier and sloppier with birds and dolphins everywhere.

All in all I think the times were spot on, with better fishing on 24th due to the workups and more difficult as expected on the 25th given the moon phase.

Appreciate your efforts here!

guys when the moon is not up the fish tend to bite more inline with the current flowing so on average its when the current is at its fastest for the area you are fishing...
some areas have different times, like Hooks bay on a incoming will start straight away and go for about 2hrs, just around the corner towards the back of Waiheke Is it will start 2hrs latter, so if you get my drift you need to know what happens in the area you fish to take advantage of the tide flow when the moon has no influence on the bite time...
but as you can see in the afternoon the moon is starting to rise, for the fish that haven't feed there will be a tendency "of 3hrs" for them now to get stuck in, so its up to you in these conditions to give it your best shot either with the currents or the rising moon....
hence the reason for hard fishing... if you work it out you should be rewarded...

truth be crowbar ive never fished the Kaipara, how about you letting us know how it go's and we may be able to work something out for you guys as well...
ive fished the Manukau on occasions with some weird results....
incoming tides with my anchour an chain above the water, catching snapper no more than 6ft under the prop... that place is crazy... in a shark contest we drove the boat until we hit the bottom then cast into the shallows to hook 50-75cm sharks in the shallows... baby bronzies which cleaned up in the comp....
Gurnard seem not to like the high current areas and you need to find a place that current swirls around like a basin or a hole were they can dodge the high flow.... or wait to the tide drops off a bit.... but in most cases a burly trail just brings baby sharks or kahawia
so working out bite times for your area is not going to be easy...
try currents and then add the moon to the mix when you get a really true frenzy going and work from that.... there will be a formula in there somewhere....

Good bite starting midday last minute frenzy just before dark..

went out this morning, lines in water at 6:15am at rangi channel. Last of the outgoing was quiet, lots of nibblers but no real takes. Managed 1. Current stopped, went out to worm beds, nothing. Went out to noises, nothing. Went back to rangi once the current had got going. still quiet at 11:30am, then at 12:00pm there was a more agressive bite and we managed another 7 better fish. The fish must be reading your bite times Lethal LOL All up it was a tough day and even at midday the bite was tentative and still hard work.

Cheers for that beerbatter i just wish i new why they bite by the moon and tides...
funny creatures, i guess it has something to do with living in the shallows when young, they are influenced by the tides and the moon, which is when they inherit these characteristics...

Hey Eric

Not sure if this has any affect , but last month and next months are very unusual as both have a blue moon.

Blue moons are typcially only every 2.5 years and extremely rare to have 2 in the same year.

I guess this is only rare is you are bothered about calendar months, so maybe has no affect on what your'e doing....

you could find a early bite in the morning crack of dawn,
3hrs after it rises just gives you a small window before the moon puts the stoppers on.

Went out this morning and threw poppers around the Carusoe marker at about 6.30am this morning. Had fun with rats until about 7.00am before setting up a drift off Park Point. Picked up 4 snaps in the next 20 minutes before the off switch was hit and I went home.

Fished the shallows out from Maraeti again last night. Fish were biting pretty consistantly from 5.30pm right through until about 7.50pm when it went totally dead. Could have been the tide slowing but it was very sudden. We were all getting hit then next baits nothing, dead! Maybe the moonset?

Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish caught will we realise we can't eat money.

Hi Eric
left kohi just after 6, into motuhie channel, really good sign but the plastics i was trying didnt seem to work, 3 drifts with squid and I had 6 over 40.
was basically straight into them, once i had the flavour sorted.
There were a heap of small, 15cm, fish and the last drift definitely seemed to be more small fish.
Back at the ramp by 8.15.

Motuhie channel from 7am to 9.30 fished reasonably well. Kept 8 nice snaps on softies (pink and new penny crazy legs were the ticket). Didn't fish any longer as we had caught dinner and time to get to work, however the bite was still going. Noted a charter boat shifting around and not catching anything particularly worthy on baits.

Biggest was this rather chubby chap  - all fish in great condition.
