Dreaming about an upgrade at some stage and seen a catch 390, the layout looks pretty good, weighs 28.5kg, and with skegs fitted, tracks fairly well .... from what I read about. Can anybody tell me what sort of a fishing platform it is? I want something that is quick-ish and lighter than my viking tempo and handles the surf with a hint of control, rather than just being pushed onto the sand side on. A Mate has a prowler 13 and leaves me for dead, a lot less effort to paddle.

BTW even if you bought a 390 your mate would still leave you for dead.     Why dont you have a look at the Mission 420?   On the other hand there are a lot of P13 around and they should be fairly reasonably priced on TM.

forget the mission, had a sit in the 420 a couple of weeks ago, was going to go for a paddle but just a sit was enough,, unless your 4'6" and 45kg it is CRAMPED!!!! and a big moulded piece that traps your legs (i think it is ment for your FF) the two guys who did take it out managed about 3 minutes between them coming in with wet arses and not impressed...
(JUST MY OPINION/OBSERVATIONS ALL OF YOU OUT THERE WHO LIKE TO GREASE UP THE MANUFACTURERS FOR FREE BEES).
Anyway, if you like the look of the p13, spend a bit of time in your mates (even take it out for a fish if he will let you) and if you like it I would go that way.. as has been said plenty of 13's and 4.5's on the old trade me...

Dryfly, Orca on here has a 390 and I have fished with him a lot. It is a very stable and dry platform. As for speed, I had Prowler Elite 4.5 and now a Fluid Bamba and he has no problem matching me for speed. He does have a very efficient paddle stroke tho which I am sure is a big part of it. And is about 40kg lighter....

In times where we have had to put the yaks to the test, the performance of the 390 surprised me. The 420 is a totally different yak to the 390. Orca looked at them but took one look and walked away.

If you want more info, pm Orca.

Hi Guys, I see this thread was active nearly 4 years ago in November and December 2009 before the response last night. Hopefully Dryfly hasn't been stuck making a decision until now ShockedLOL

For what it's worth, I believe it's important to know a paddlers height, weight, and typical paddling conditions (most common locations) before suggesting suitable kayaks. I also believe it's hugely worthwhile taking all the kayaks that may be of interest for a test paddle. There's nothing like having your own butt in the seat to get an idea of how a kayak feels and performs, and whether it suits you and your requirements.
