taupo bay - stephenson island was about 2-3m on sat. very green. Some sections opened up to maybe 5 but you wouldn't see fish at that range, only large objects like rock or divers.

After the dive they looked pretty freaky but have gone down now thanks to stingooz. Thumbs Up.

Not a good look for a guy, but i'm sure some of the Parnell ladies could save themselves some coin on the collagen, if only they were prepared to swim into a jellyfish every now and thenWink

Dived Hottie early this morning. Lots of Butters but no snaps. Vis 5-12m. Pockets of good and bad water.

Vis was a gloomy ~5m at Maori point off the fishermans track south side of tarwharanui. By the way, perhaps i should have asked this before i set off with all my kit duct taped to my mountain bike, but is there a way down to the shore anywhere out further towards takatu/elephant point? I searched but gave up and continued to the track access at Maori pt. Saw two kingies, but they were both fairly flighty :(

vis ranged from 4 m to about 6 m around southern end of Kawau and Moturekareka over the weekend. Managed to spook a couple (one about 4 kg) at Moturekareka.
shot a few pannies for dinner, and picked up some scallops - pretty thin on the ground at Bostaquet bay.

oh well, I guess noone has.

went to Omaha this morning. Very calm, viz around 6-7 meters but in some places almost undivable due to the density of jellyfish. Almost immediately came across a nice trev in the weed. Never shot a trev before so was very scared to spook it. Laid on the sand next to the weed and waited until it showed again. Shot through the grass seeing almost none of the fish and luckily got it right where i wanted. Nothing big, probably under 2 kg but it is my first so I'm happy Smile. Set some burley and left it for 10-15 minutes - came back but it was still untouched. Did not see any snaps at all.  Ended up shooting some butters and pulled out 4 crays and even found some legal paua. At the end of the dive came across school of quite big koheru (if they are koheru - the spotted ones that look like mackerel) - missed few times - i blame my numb fingers for that and decided that it must be time to go.

also tried to go to johnes bay to look for some scallops but did not get any. plenty of scallops but all undersized. saw some asian looking dudes on scuba with the guns and bags full of scollies, plus lot of other divers - the place looks very popular.

Mahinepua bay this morning 3-5 metres. Got 6kg snapper and saw another few around but this is fatty one with plenty of meat for me and my wife.

picked that up around mathesons. A few smaller models around, perhaps up to 2kg but this was the biggest so ate the metal. Viz around 3m-5m.

nah, I know what kahawai looks like. it was some kind of mackerel, just not sure if koheru is the same thing. there are some with black back, and some ones with spots all over, same shape but different colors.

Originally posted by Fishoholic Fishoholic wrote:

I'm sure they do LOL. Just had some smoked. Nice! However - still heaps of them there and still no sharks after me. Am I pushing it?
Saw lot of long tail stingrays this time. There were always lot of stingrays at omaha, but this time unusual number of small ones with 2 meter tails. Was so tempting to get one by the tail but my camera box was borrowed from me for the weekend and if would have been a waste doing it without filming...

Koheru have a yellow band down there side, with a black dot near the gill plate.

Jack macks are more silver looking.

Slimmy macks, are sort of green with black tiger patterns over them.

Thanks Rusky, it's good to know.

Googled both jack macks and koheru and they are not quite it. If I search for just mackerel some pictures look very close to what I met. May be they were slimmy jacks but i could not find a picture.

Yes TG it has been suggested to me that various spots work well, or don't really work at all on particular tides. Perhaps making note of what the tide is doing in the area you dive would be useful for future reference. I am still stabbing in that dark when it comes to the technical details.

Rusky,  being from the UK that is what I call a mackerel...
Didn't think they appeared here, and surprised they are in the North.  Logically they would be further south, especially in spring, based on UK rod fishing experience.  Are they common?

I was on Darren Shield's boat, the big tincan with the big "spearo" decals on the sides.

I saw something big shooting past me, 5 kg of something, thought it was a snapper, but it was too dark. Other than that not much. Little snapper that I sort of followed, it didn't really spook that easy, must be because I did not have a gun pointed at it.

Me n Speargun Vigilante headed out Leigh Coast yesterday, the plan was to hit Takatu point and bomb a couple of Spot x's from the wee tinny.
Well, we almost made it out of Whangateau harbour and the motor overheated, took us 3 more stop starts and we ended up at the Eastern most point of Ti point, a spot that i've been meaning to dive but can't be bothered walking to. The place was fishy as! A nice school of squid eluded us and a couple of 35cm snaps were spotted, we nailed 3 butters each, and chopped up a couple of jack macks, but nothing came in unfortunately.
Later I was setting a burley and was visited by a school of 20 - 30 kingies, prolly 8kg ish, they had the decency to stick around while i retrieved my gun, so i stuck one right in the middle and had a good time playing him with my reel. Choice!
A couple of barely legal snaps came in to the burley, but left them to it.
We headed round to the weedline at Ti Point and nailed a johnnie, not much else seen there.
Headed over to Omaha to get some of Rusky's Tuatuas and we dropped a burley cage down with the anchor, ever hopeful of a gurnard turning up. Found a good patch of Tuatuas and stocked up. Yum!
Headed back to the boat and what do you know - Brodie (Speargun Vigilante) smashes a nice sized gurnard getting a free feed in only 3 or so metres of water. Choice!
Dropping the Motor off for a service today and having Tuatua fritters for tea toniteThumbs Up

Viz was 8mtrs in some places, 3 - 5 in most places.

Dun 'Ti point' with PaulB this morning. Vis was superb, prolly 10m at times and the fish are just starting to come on too. Paul got a king about 8kg; I lost one with the three prong after a sudden rush of blood to the head- was stupid but as I shot it in the forward part of it's gill plate it might be  O.K? Or not. Anyway, passed up two more and saw good mobs here and there. PB also got a johnnie and we slayed some good 'weigher' sized koheru and I even got a pretty decent squid on the polespear too. All in all, a very good sign after a sluggish winter.

A little bit further afield than your usual Auckland diving but I drove up to Whangarei stayed at a mates place at Ocean Beach. The intention was to dive somewhere else but we ended up just diving off the main beach yesterday. The viz was about 8m but was hazy and still quite green. There were heaps of small kahawai and trevally cruising around and it felt like a kingi could turn up at any time. I screwed up twice: once on a snapper about 5kg and once on a large trevally I found in a gut. Great dive though and I took home four pannies and three nice trevs. Definately feels like summer is on the way.

Dun Hotty with Big Jim and Besty today. Was pretty lame, with a couple of cray for A LOT of effort and a less than 4kg snap off a burley. Vis was alright at about 6 or 8m but overall, not the best diving.
Highlight of the day was Besty discretely urinating into various vessels aboard the good vehicle BIG JIM much to Big Jims disgust.

Awesome fish craymountsThumbs Up
Headed up to the coast out of warkworth with Kelly after some kingis yesterday. Viz was around 10m but it wasn't as fishy as I was hoping. Some pretty large KY came thru but not a lot of bait fish around. I was thinking it wasn't going to happen but towards the end of the dive we got buzzed by a school of 30 or so kingis and we both popped off the closest fish to each of us not wanting to miss the opportunity. It had been a while since we had shot our last kingfish. They weren't particulary large weiging in at 11kg & 9kg and I don't think any of the others in the school would of gone much past 12kg. As soon as we had em we started the long swim back. Kelly has had some bad luck in the past with losing fish so she volunteered to tow both fish as long as I followed behind watching them. I think I got the cruisy deal there.

Went out for my first dive in ages on Saturday at Ti Point, wasnt too fishy, but jus good to be in the water again. My brother got a decent mullet for our indigenous mate, and I got a personal best JD. Just over 2kg

Went to Te Arai on Sunday. Visibility - modest 4-5 meters. Loads of baitfish - koheru, kahawai, micro-trevally. Was hoping to see some kingys feasting on this variety but none showed up. The outer reefs were surprisingly empty. Did not see anything sizeable so ended up shooting koheru and kahawai, got whole bunch of those and a decent squid. Lost yet another knife so if anyone finds a knife with yellow handle at te arai - let me know and I'll get you a matching holder Wink.

On the way back got a strong pull on the line. I thought - aha! I might finally meet a shark. Turned back to find a big gunnet sitting on my float and having some of my koheru. He was pretty reluctant to leave so I had to go back and poke him with the spear, only then he accepted the fact that its not his fish.

Had a swim on the leigh coast this morning.
Popped a few JDs and a boary.
Viz was decent, over 10m.
I noticed a few transparent ribbons traveling along?

Nice haul. That looks more than just a few JD's. Any kingis sighted?
