I am going to run a little photo competition with the permission of Uncle - he doesn't know it yet but he will be donating some top knotch MacSkippy/MacFlasher gear for the winner as decided upon by Uncle and myself.

The rules are simple:

1) Post your (one entry per member) best fishing related picture into this thread, add a few descriptive words to accompany the shot and you are in.

- if you are unsure on how to post pictures then feel free to mailto:[email protected]">email it to me and I will get it sorted or use one of the online photo banks such as http://photobucket.com/">Photobucket to host your jpeg files.

- I can tell you this much the winning photo will not be a shot of a bloody dead dehydrated, out of focus fish but rather a well compossed image capturing "what the essence of fishing means to you".

- It would be great if you could also share what camera, film, settings you used to take the shot as well.

Any questions?......get to it peoples!

Caught the king salmon on the Gulkana river, Alaska.  Measured between 55 and 56 inches long and estimated weight was 60 to 65 pounds. The guide and myself holding the fish did the kodak moment thing and then released. Now I'll be able to catch its kids in the years to come.

Wow Norseman, that's some fish! Were you spinning or fly-fishing?

It looks like you have both types of rod's in the raft.

I managed one from the Ashburton Rv (Sth Island) that was 48" weighed 32lb cleaned, so can only imagine the "pull' that one would have had!

Posted By: Tagit
Date Posted: 18 Apr 2004 at 12:12pm

Norseman - good fish, were you doing the Alaskan Reverse Troll, the Heave & Snatch, The Bottom Bounce, or were you fly fishing? Fished the Russian, Kenai, & Alagnac rivers a few years back and certainly learned some new techniques. Also learned from fishing the Russian that the good old Taupo 'picket fence' is actually pretty civilised compared to the 2 deep 'picket fence' that they operate there when the Reds are running. Interesting experience!!!Caught a fish very similiar to yours Reverse Trolling in the Kenai, plus a bunch of smaller ones from 30lb - 50lb. Only managed the one visit, but is on my list of places to return to at some stage, finances & SWMBO permitting.

Nice fish, even better foto

Posted By: Norseman
Date Posted: 18 Apr 2004 at 2:25pm

Uncle - was using the spinning outfit when the king hit and yes we used fly rods also that day. Caught the fish on cured salmon roe bouncing it along the bottom of the river from shore. The raft trip was an all day event. We would float down the river till we saw some good looking places then give it a try. If nothing there we would continue floating down river to another spot.

Tagit - Have fished the Russian/Kenai rivers also and I know exactly where your talking about. Have to take the river ferry across on the cable to the other side and then you can head up river and fish the Russian or head down river and fish the Kenai. Great fun when those sockeyes are running and I enjoy fishing for sockeye more than I do the kings. Those sockeyes are a blast to catch!

Posted By: Tagit
Date Posted: 18 Apr 2004 at 3:51pm
That's the one Norseman, fished the Russian there, although we did the charter thing on the Kenai out of Soldotna (sp??). We rafted the Alagnac (3 hrs by float plane from Anchorage) for 7 days. Middle of nowhere, heaps of Beers & Moose, and unreal fishing for Kings & Reds (+Rainbows+Grayling+Pinks+Chum+Pike+Dolly Varton+++). Only problem was my poor little 8wt fly rod was as useful as a limp noodle against any King over ~25lbs.

A late summer evening on Wellington Harbour, lying in wait of a big red.

For extra points, the silouetted person is a naked model (with hat on), and just to out-do Hellfish it was taken on a pin-hole camera.

 Hey Mars, nice pic!!!

Seeing more of the naked model  would have made your picture a whole lot better though, perhaps not wearing a hat... going back to the rules of competition set by Kerren he said "the winning photo will not be a shot of a bloody dead dehydrated, out of focus fish but rather a well compossed image" making a picture of a naked model fair game  ... of course she would have to be pictured while handling a rod
