This Jones bay thing has me thinking:

Wouldn't it be cool if we could make a burley bag out of something biodegradable (flax?) and chuck a frozen bomb in there (minus packaging obviously) and a heavy rock and lob it out off the rocks or drop it in from a kayak etc?

I know we can paddle bags out hanging under floats etc, but this means we have to pick them up again at the end of the day and also introduces more snags for casting as well as fighting solid crafty fish (kings and XOS snapper etc)

Does anyone happen to be married to a crafty old wahine with mad flax skills??

nice idea but sounds like a pain in the ass to make a burley cage foe each burley ya go through...

Great idea.....but I find it hard enough to get the missus to make dinner!! Ouch

There must be a better way......

This may be dumb and stupid but.....How much current is there? What would happen if you just chuck out a bomb...no bag....just the berley?

Still frozen it would float away.  Half frozen it would sink and be gone in a matter of minutes.  On sunday we went through 10kg of burley in about an hour courtesy of the wave action.

Was an awesome burley trail though bits floating every where I looked for hours.

The idea of a biodegradable solution is a good idea....trouble is.... I got no idea Confused

I am not used to using berley at all. How would you have distributed the mussel berley if ropo had got it. I'm sure it wouldnt have been in convenient bags.

This is an interesting problem and I for one am interested in the solution. Having said that I'm all for just chucking it all (or most) in the shallows (over a period of time) and letting it wash out at will.

Yeah I don't mean specifically for this trip, just thinking in general. Could be some potential here...

with one tonne of burley I would have made the mother of all burley flingers  http://willrhale.googlepages.com/catapult_sample.jpg/catapult_sample-full.jpg - http://willrhale.googlepages.com/catapult_sample.jpg/catapult_sample-full.jpg something like that but smaller I reckon.

But yeah I get realy iffy about my burley bags getting ripped up and drifting away in tiny none bio degradable bits.  Used to use a spring with heavy netting around it which was awesome for catch greedy piper.  But it swam away with a bronzie in an expermint gone wrong.  Was also a pain in the ass to haul around.  But it made less mess and didn't float away in tiny bits.

The other thing is that you don't want to just biff the burley out and let it break up.  Keeping it at your feet and in good current/movement is just as good.  Putting out down current of you then fishing into the end of the trail is what I like to do when I can.  So hanging it off a ledge it would need to take a fair bit of a beating.  Can't think of anything bio degradeable that would be cheap and convient as a nylon sack

yep i've thought of this too, you need to get a kite flax bag to use, and anchor with a rock

Not biodegradable but we use cray net as our burley bags and they are great. Very durable so wont fall apart in the swell and dont scare the fish. You only need one which will last you ages. I've had mine for a few years now and highly recommend them

There used to be a guy fishing the bricks around from Campbells/Castor Bays. Had a pot of berley and a scoop, bit like an icecream scoop, on a what looked like a 2 ft fibreglass stick. Scooped and flicked a good distance, covered a wide area, and no fuss when you moved. Caught some nice fish too.

That sounds like one of those things pet owners use to fling a tennis ball for their dogs. Think i'll try that. Cheers.

Try some of the asian fishing stores for the scoops. I picked up one from the store in Mt Albert (Cheers Fishing) for $5. I did need to araldite the scoop back on after a couple of sessions though.

Scoops could well be the right way to go at Jones Bay given the volume of people and burley.

Probably no good for this covert operation, but for future reference -

Peat Pots from garden centre.

Pour berley into pot with rock
Freeze

To deploy, unwrap, lob.Clown

I've heard speak of "berley grenades", which I think were frozen balls of fish gunk around a greywacke stone. May have been a salty rumour, as I never saw them myself, and the guy who told me about them (Franco) is a hippy. However, it seems like a good idea, as it should sink, and wouldn't leave any trash in ol' mother ocean.

I don't know how you'd freeze each grenade to shape- perhaps in the wife's favourite coffee mug?

Paper mache and peat pots sound like good ideas, fellers, keep up the good work.

Another emergency berley I've used a few times is a tin of fish- based cat food, although this of course means you have a filthy tin to carry back out. It works out very cheaply, though, and for some reason, it drives sprats (Yellow Eyed Mullet) out of their minds with excitement.

How about a piece of large diameter bamboo, holes drilled through it all over the place, put the frozen bomb inside, tie a rope to the top and fling it in.  After use, once waterlogged the bamboo will sink and decompose.  Or just chuck it in the bush. The hard bit is finding bamboo large enough for the bombs, but fine for any homemade stuff.

Why???? Like JK mentioned, I've got a homemade burley bag made out of craypot mesh - COOKES fishing supplies - A rock gets chucked in if I'm rock fishing or a large car spring when in a boat - wahlah instant wobbly pot minus the $150 price tag. I just can't understand the need for biodegradable, just get something a bit more hard wearing and keep using it. I must admit I hate seeing onion sacks getting left around the place.

ngututamere I think the main aim for this thread is for the upcoming berley bombing of Jones Bay and not wanting to litter the area with plastic and onion sacks...

There is a biodegradable berley bomb on the market but forgotten name (something like teazer).
It's roughly the size of a beer can and looks like a white grenade which you pull side of before deploying. Apparently it disolves over about 5 hours and it's full of some kind of pellets.  Was tested in Napier aquarium and snapper went nuts.  Don't know if you'll find any shops with it, apart from Guns and tackle Napier possibly. I think most shops got samples but no one really took them on.
Only thing is i got a couple to try and hard to tell if they worked or not.
They're not very heavy so may get washed away with tide??  The ideas there though.

may sound a bit sick ,but after living on farms as a young nipper the amount of sheep intestines and stomachs that got thrown to the eels would have made grerat burley dispensers and totally biodegradable????

Interesting - you could make burley sausages, freeze them, and just punch some holes in it before lobbing it out...

thats what i was thinking or fill the stomach with rocks and burley so it will sink!!!

Berley Grenades are easy to make.  Use the 150gm yoghurt pots or similar as moulds and mix burley with 30% sand and freeze.  Just lob them out as necessary, the sand helps them sink and that's all thats left when they dissolve.

Paper lolly bags with a rock in the bottom, berley thrown in thawed out and refrozen so when you biff the bags out the paper slowly breaks up and they sit on the bottom thawing out releasing bits, plus you can throw them all over the show and get good distance out of them.

buy some 80mm pvc pipe cut into sections about 100mm tall sitting on a board or in a container in the freezer throw a small rock inside and fill to the top with some thrawed out berley and pack the tubes untill full. When frozen whack them on the ground to pop them out the pipe and you can throw them a good distance and can make heaps up out of the standard 1.5kg berley bombs.
