the easiest way to tell the difference is that spinning rods generally have a bigger first guide

actually almost all the guides of an overhead rod from bottom except maybe the last 3 to the tip is smaller that a spinning.. also the model number mostly has 'OH' for obvious reason. If in doubt ask the person on the shop.

yes you could but its not ideal, but using a spinning reel on a rod desinged for a overhead reel is,nt a good option as a spinning reel requires bigger guides to enable the line to flow out freely, good luck.

Quite right in what the guys say but still able to be used . used an Alvey reel at the nats on an o/h rod (main rod snapped )still able to throw 100tmrs  trial the rods to see what give's you a nice action with a fish on and change the eyes to suit reel..

Dont use a overhead reel on an rod designed for a spinning reel, its bending against the rod's spine, likewise for a spinning reel on a overhead rod. I've seen a spin reel being used on overhead rod and a good 25cm snapped off the tip end. LOL

the only times I'v seen spin reels on o/h rods, they had the reel ontop and they wound it kackhanded

i was also under the understanding that rods should only be used one way.

as baitfeeder said the spine/backbone of the rod is designed to bend primarily one way.

It dosent run directly down the middle of the blank. For example you can visibly see the graphite/carbon or whatever it is my 2 piece ugly stick spin rod when its in two pieces, and the backbone is not centered - there is more or less material above or below the "backbone" depending what way its designed to bend. i.e. overhead of spin.

If its your only option to get a line in the water then no doubt it'd get you fishing. It'd be far from ideal though, as well as the spine comments above you'll probably find that the spacing and number of guides on a spin rod will cause the line to rub on the blank in an overhead application.

cool, i'm not gon do it, it was just that i didn't know if there was any structural difference (i.e. the spine of the rod) between the two rather than just the guides. i have a spare rod of each type, got them off a mate that didn'y need them, but i think imma give them to a mate since i don't really need them. thanks peoples, this has been most enlightening!! you guys rock!!Thumbs%20Up
