12ft tin machine, a very very dubious 15hp on the back, had to repair it 3 times last trip (separate problems LOL). it planes with two in it as long as we don't shoot too many fish Thumbs%20Up

4.7M Surtees Centre Console
60hp 4stroke EFI Yamaha
Underfloor fish bin, and underfloor 40lt fuel tank. Cruising range is about 200km. Max speed is just a touch under 60km/h with 2 pob.
Plenty of storage in the console and shelves on the transom.
Side shelves can hold guns up to 1600mm.
Outboard pod is floodable, so we throw fish in there instead of having to get into the boat to use the fishbin.
Lowrance LMS520 sounder / chart plotter with lowrance fuel computer.
Uniden UM525 VHF radio
All aerials and dive flag are mounted on the top of the console.
SARCA #2 anchor, and anchor lifting float.
Tonnes of space for 3 divers.

.....and not a rod holder to be foundCool

The electronics before the fuel computer was fitted.

Quentin, how'd you like your fuel computer?  Are they easy to install?  Been thinking about it since my evinrude guages are dubious to say the least.

Fuel computer is great, especially as there is no way of telling how much is left in the tank without using a dipstick. The Lowrance gauge can display most of the functions available on the sounder / chart plotter, but I have configured it for the fuel functions (fuel remaining, fuel flow, range, fuel used this trip)

Reasonably easy to install, especially once you follow the instructions Shocked

Accurate to about 100ml over a day of running. I could probably fine tune this to be even more accurate.

I'm looking to buy a boat at the mo.

I have decided based upon quality of hull and the amount of room.  Most will neeed some modification by removing the seats and swapping one or maybe two with a pedestal seat.

TSW, Have a look at an extremeboats 550 or 570 maybe? pretty sturdy and ok in crap seas.  Dives 4 comfortably.  THey seem to land quite nicely when you get airbourne aswell, as i found out last monday coming back from LB  in 25knots of SW!  I imagine thats a quality you'll be looking for.
They don't make the 550 anymore, but the hull of the 570s the same, they just measure the bowsprits extra 20cm, 5mil all round i think.  Fair shifts with a 90 on the back and isn't too thirsty.

How are these 12 foot Tinnies? I got a lift with a guy i one the other day and it seemed to do the job for fishing.

I am also slowly but surely looking at getting something but my budget won't go much past an oldish 12 foot Fyran or something.

Touche R Jack! touche!
12 ft tinnie, 15 horse, I like to thrash the naughty little thing, nothing stays dry, but who cares? takes 3 of us out for cray and scallie dives on the Manukau and is easy to clean, launch, reverse etc, etc.
12 foot tinnies are gooood.

Our 12 foota is mean as! like keeweebee says, reversing, launching etc is no problem its even light enough to lift if you have to for whatever reason. And if your motor dies on you like ours did you can row for an hour to get back to Makara beach. Or just drag it up beach it, walk home and pick it up when the wind dies down. My brother in law has even taken it round past the gate got caught out with big winds, beached it and slept under it for the night. So it can double as a house if youre wife decides to kick you out for diving too much.

Obviously they are not meant for going to far out, with the limited space for a tank and obviously the fact that it is not made for rough seas, how far our can you go with them?

Be careful though, i've taken the family out to browns island from Bucklands beach and she's cut up pretty quickly. Enough for my two boys to not want to go out again since.
Start off small TG and get the hang of things, its cheap, easy to launch and cheap!
I know of a few guys that have bought big boats and wish they still had the little runabout because they tended to take it out more.
You might get caught out once in a while if you do silly things with your mates, just learn from it and dont tell the wife and she's all good!

I used to have a 12 foot fyran, and even now I cringe at some of the things I did in it - days when I should never have been on the water. They are NOT a long distance or rough water boat. A wind gust can flip them, they have very little freeboard and are not particularly stable. Anything over 20 knots maximum is too much. That's not to say you couldn't go to the Barrier with one, you could, but you just need to realise that whatever boat you have, the sea can catch you out. Even in Herb's 8m plus AMF with twin 200hp, I have done some dumb things, and have been very close to disaster,

The paradox is that many sensible folk in the smaller boats are often much better off when it comes to avoiding a tradgedy.

The smart guy in the smaller boat often knows how risky it is, and is often better prepared...

-wetsuits often on and off at the boat ramp (you get wet in most small boats)
-life jackets on all the time

These 2 things are the most important to prevent a tragedy.

even if the small boat flips and you all go in the drink the risk of death by drowning and hypothermia are greatly reduced with the wetsuit and life jacket.

People on large boats without adequate safety gear have a false sense of security, especially when it comes to river bar crossings.

I see there is a nice looking Tsunami on TM ATM (no I am not advertising). The Auck Uni Dive Club used one for ages and I think it would pretty good for spearos. 15hp might be a bit underpowered (certainly for scuba).

Would welcome anyones opinion on these boats. Especially in comparison to the small Macs (theres just something appealing about plastic).

The 4m one with the 15hp merc looks good for spearfishing

15hp will maybe underpowered with more than 2 POB and gear, but don't worry, 15hp is a popular size and will sell easy.

would be much better with 25hp or even 30hp

other thing it would need would be some of that nice thick EVA foam on the seats to make it more comfortable on your back when you go thru the chop.

We have a similar boat, a 4.1m FREWZA made down in Invercargill. It has a 25hp which is a good match for the boat for up to 3 divers and gear, gets along at 32-34 Km/hr (GPS measured) with x2 POB, x2 20L Tote tanks of fuel and all gear. The FREWA is a well made boat with beautiful TIG welds on most of the structure, the guy that makes them (Brendon Frew) is a very good welder and tradesman.

We usually go out the kaituna cut and it is ideal, because even at low tide we get thru OK, easy to jump out and just drag it across the bar to deeper water and jump back in and go.

If you are going to get a small boat then definitely go Pontoon if you can afford it, they have so much more safety margin compared with a 12ft tinny.

We have been out in 25 knts a few times with a 2m swell and soupy chop and the FREWZA is still well within it's capabilities, even though you get wet and have to slow down, you still get home OK.

Thanks guys, all good advice.

Yea, I'm not looking for speed so not really worried about that. I just want something that will spare my damn knees walking around with the weights and all. Just little things like getting out to wellington reef without having to walk miles on the beach and then swim out as well. Getting a little further away is good as well though.

I think a 12 foot is what I need yea.

How far can you go on lets say 20 litres and a 15 hp motor? I know it's very relative but sort of an estimate would be good?

alot depends on how much you load the boat up, and how choppy it is.

In good conditions with little or no chop and with a medium load of say x2 avg guys @75kg and spearo gear my guess would be you would get along at 25-30km/hr and maybe use 6-8L per hr.

So I suppose in flat conditions on 20L your range might be as much as 50-60km, but if it blows up rough and choppy then this could easily be cut in half as you are forced to slow down to with boat speed, but yet still be quite heavy on the throttle.

TG, if you go with the 12ft, there is a guy in Tepuke that makes up clip-on outrigger pontoons for either side of the boat,

I have not had experience with them but they supposedly make the boat much more stable if you plan to do open water boating and river bar crossings.

12 ft tinnys are really not suited to open water boating though, We once had a 12'6" Hartley ply dinghy (basically same shape as fryan tinny) with 20hp tiller merc on it. I was never relaxed in this boat when it got choppy in open waters, and yes I had my life jacket on.

I remember we repainted the hartley ply dinghy bottom ORANGE,

I always used to joke with people that It would be much easier for the Airforce Orion to spot it when it was upside down.

We also tied and jammed a small truck tire tube under the bow cover, so the boat would still float if we flipped it...

but you will probably be OK with the tinny as I think they put foam blocks under the seats so they won't sink so easy.

The Pontoon boats are so  much more stable, and both dives can get in and out from the same side at the same time without capsizing it.

Cheers Richard, as I recall the club tsunami had a 30hp so 15had me worried (was pretty old and heavy tho).

Have you considered one of the cheapy Macs on TM TG? There seem to be a number of older ones kicking around.

I think 12ft tinnies are for estuary and lake work, not round the NZ coastline. I realise heaps of people have fun with these things tho and good on you so please don't flame :)

I am looking at the pontoon tinnies as well. They do seem to be more up to the job I must say.

My finances are a little limited so I am looking at about $2000 maybe. Also only once the new arrival is settled and I count my coins.

You have to excuse me mate, I dunno much about the boats. What are the MACS?

Yea, I'm not looking at getting out in open seas, was more thinking like heading over to rangitoto island and maybe Waiki and so, all the smaller islands around here in the Gulf more than anything else. and place like wellington reef in army bay.

I wouldn't even attempt hitting the road down to barrier islands or anything. That would be looking for trouble for a beginner boaty with a not so open seas boat.

$2K not going to get you a decent 4m pontoon boat with 20-30hp OB on a trailer.

You will need atleast $4K to get a complete 2nd rig in fit for purpose condition.

But better to buy something that will do the job properly, and get you out and back to spearo spots with confidence.

I chose a boat that was small enough to tuck into quiet areas out of the wind.  Storage for fins, guns, floats, volleyball net etc is never an issue. The full size bath after a dive is recommended, you just have to make sure you don't drip salty wetsuit pyss onto the carpet.

I agree with Snoop. For $2K or less you may as well get a yak.  You'll only spend that each year maintaining a useless cheap boat otherwise and your cheap boat won't get you into bigger seas. Plus it's way more fun, and you can launch just about anywhere.

Any chance of a yak attack mission later next week Snoop? Same place as last time we went out and you embarassed me by being able to power back into 35 knots whilst I squealed like a girl being blown out to sea??

Dunno. It is still a while so time will tell.

Let me resurrect this one.

Some questions on boats.

I am looking at a little 12 foot tinnie that has been stored in a garage for a bit. The motor has been services jan 08 but the boat has not done any work since then. They guy selling it ran the motor for 15 minutes on a hose and says it's running fine still.

Are there any holes to look out for here.? Any advice would be appreciated.

TG You need minimum 15hp on a boat like that, you will otherwise be disappointed with speed and performance, motor is also 1974, and that is getting on, you should be able to pick up a 12 ft tinny on a trailer with  maybe 15hp or 20hp motor for less than $2.5K.

Posted By: TG
Date Posted: 02 Jun 2009 at 7:14pm
HEHE, I don't really have more than 1.5 k. I hear your points though. I'm not to worried though about speed for now, I can always change that later. For me it is just about getting to place for now, be it slow or fast.

maybe a kayak would be the way to go? little maintenance, no trailer warrant, no strong tow vehicle needed, keep ya fit, easier to store then a boat.

Posted By: TG
Date Posted: 03 Jun 2009 at 10:57am
I thought of that yea Paul, but I want to get something that my mates and family can sort of enjoy with me as well. Kayak is a brilliant idea for one guy indeed, and I agree on the keeping fit and maybe having the arms do something as well, not just the legs finning. But only I can enjoy that basically.

I would also imagine that you are slightly more limited on the distance you can go with a kayak and the distance with a boat. Never used a kayak really so in the end I am not very sure about all these things.

Thanks Richard,

I have asked him about the rust on the axl, whether it is cosmetic and something that I would be able to repair as I won't have extra money to spend on it.

After reading the "should I buy this?  what about that?" musings I thought I might post a pic of a boat Wink for a change

NOT a spearo boat but ...   it gets me there.

1998 CSB Huntsman 525 Sport (5.25 m waterline length - 5.5m LOA).
115 hp 2-stroke Johnson
Top speed 50 mph with 2 up, cruises easily at 25 - 30 mph with 3 or 4 guys and gear in average conditions.

Not a "barrier boat" but it gets you to most places quickly.

Why this boat?  A number of reasons:
  • Wife is a keen water skier (pole comes out for spearfishing missions)
  • 50/50 ownership with bro-in-law (which works well - the benefits of sole ownership with half the costs)
  • good deal at the time we bought it Smile
  • creature comforts are important to the others who use the thing
  • Gets used a lot for family boating with the occaisional spear fishing mission.

I wouldn't buy this boat as a "spearo boat" but it does the job.  (The next boat won't be purchased for a while)

lol, yea, just chatting to the guy.

It will still need a lightboard for the trailor and a wof rego. Not that bad though, that is something I can pick up. Would have to get the lightboard at least before I fetch it.

Ohhh, and apparantly the motor needs a bit of a service as the air/gas ratio's need a bit of tweaking. Dunno much about boat engines but I would assume this is a two stroke motor with a little carb.

In the end, it is welded, not riveted, it has the 15 hp motor which everyone has been telling me to get at least, not leaking.... Better than most I saw out there for the same $'s.

Anyone have any idea where I can get my hands on /download a 15 HP yamaha outboard manual for mid 90's motor?

The boat I am looking apparently floods the carb when it is idling/in neutral.

Just wanna check the inns and outs of sticking a screwdriver into the screwson the carb.

I gather adjusting the float level can be quite a delicate affair, just remember to mark where the screw is before you start!

I was just thinking that it could be that Mullins. If the boat goes fine when it has higher revs, then I doubt there is any dirt involved with the jets and all. It could be that the float level is to high I reckon.

take the motor in and get it serviced as the first thing you do.  then you have a bench mark of a working motor, and know where your at.

+ it means none of us are going to have to come to your emergency calls once your drifting out to sea,   if you don't have the money to be safe even in a little boat,  Don't buy a boat!

LOL Ron, but being serious many searches go into the night. Looking for a chap in a dark (or camo) wettie is bloody hard, at least the reflectors on a lifejacket help the searchers find you.
Wetsuits make FLIR (infra red sensors) useless too as they insulate the wearer so they dont show as a warm spot.

Even with night vision gear, the only some victims are seen is the reflectors on their lifejackets

Sorry to sound like a negative nelly, but this is what I have experienced in the Searches I have done

Good to see you have the other bits sorted ron Tongue

I have got a double diveyak, made by Sevylor.  It is inflatable and folds up so I can store it under my van's back seat!  It inlfates within 15 minutes, using either a 12v or double action hand pump.  VERY stable, easy to paddle and to mount/dismount, even with weight belt on.  The best investment - I am 57, so I need to conserve energy to get down and not get there (as I could, 40 years ago Wink ) I have even fitted a little 2.2 Suzuki that I use when I have no buddy to help me paddle.  I am in Tauranga and can't move the yak against the huge tides in the harbour.  I have been quite succesful with the yak as a platform - here and on the Coromandel. With two paddlers, it moves OK against the tide/wind; single paddler head wind  can be a problem.  Quite light to carry on my own.

You also get a single version. I have a tube at the back to store spear guns in.  I did a fair bit of research - all reports were very positive - commenting on the atability and ease of operation.

Engine: 90 Hp 2 Stroke Yamy a.k.a "Skippy/Jelly" mincer to all the GC/DC lads out there.

am unsure of the range as does not have under floor fueling (would of been a good idea) so we just carry 2 X 25L's and @ X 10L tanks norm, This amount of gas gets us from Whitianga all around the Merc's and also Whitianga to the Aldermans and back. (dont know how manys kws or N/M that would be?)

Just had the graphics put on her today by SIGNCORP here in auckland. and hopefully have a stereo system in before summer comes around.

We normally take 4 divers out in her but takes more than that just gets down to comfort levels.

Asleep after 4 days diving and one last early morning out to Cuvier. Herby wide awake ready to go full throttle to Cuv.

In 2001 Geofinz and I bought a boat together. A 4.5 meter South African job that was fast as hell but a bit slammy and VERY wet.

In 2008 it blew a glued seam whilst on the trailer. We had that fixed but a month or so later on a sunny day it happened again when we were in the water just south of Ohaua. We carried on diving until the second of the three chambers blew. The alloy hull was beneath the waterline and things were not looking promising.

Good weather, good luck and a powerful bilge pump got us back to Makara but it was a bit tense there for a while.

We looked hard at getting the bags replaced as they had obviously passed their use by date but after a while it seemed better to investigate a brand new boat. We researched and discounted fibreglass hulled imported RIBs and in the end settled on a Nelson made boat by Wavebreak.

Wavebreak didn't do a boat the size we wanted so they custom made this one for us.

When it arrived on a freezing September night in 2008 we were very excited with what we saw. The hull is fantastic and although the boat is quite narrow there is heaps of room inside for the two of us.

We spent a few weeks extending the old boat's trailer, then bolted the old motor and centre console into the new boat (offset to starboard to allow easy walking to the anchor). We also added float holders and modified the gun tube to be removeable.

Sea trials proved that this boat was head and shoulders above the old one and we started venturing further and further from home until one trip to Turakarei in a big northerly we buried the nose into the back of a huge following sea. Twice! Geofinz managed to wade to the stern of the boat to deploy the scupper and after a minute or two the boat was dry again but at its worst I reckon we had near 400 litres of water onboard.

This got us thinking about moving the battery higher than the current transom mount, which seemed like a good time to add nav lights, deck light, a compass, GPS and colour sounder combo and a dedicated ice bin that is long enough to fit a few headed kingfish. We also made some inwhale gear pockets and added a dining table (true story).

PHOTOS of the new modifications to come
