In my arsenal I have a 12-14# Downunder an 8# spey rod and a 7# XLS as my big rods. Being Canterbury based there will not be too many opportunites to chase big pelagics so I was looking to target Barracouda, blue cod and Trumpeter and rivermouth Kahawai- maybe blue moki too. Just seeking advice on what weight rod to go for. Thinking something that can double as a Coleridge lNight fishing rod. I'll be largely fishing landbased into 8-15metres of water and a burley trail with sinktips and polyleaders for blue cod and an intermediate for 'couda. So Just wondering what weight would handle that sort of fishing especially the horse'couda. I'm looking at either an Xi2 or TFO Axiom- will cast them side by side and make an assessment. An alternative may be a 6# 12'6 Spey rod. I do want to go as light as possible as horsing fish in when overgunned is no fun at all. Anyhow please fire away. Oh and the XLS is just to damn light and nice casting to risk on the rocks!

Hey KJ -
I've targeted 'Couda with a 6# TCR. They'll hit a popper or crease fly in a workup - wicked fun!
They'll smack a fly very aggressively - but burn out very quick. ...Don't forget a short piece of wire trace for those toothy critters.

A #9 looks to be the weight that is missing. Has to be the best all round weight for the rocks. I feel very undergunned with anything lighter on the rocks.

Agree with Craig there. 9 wt would be ideal, or even an easy casting 10.
I wouldn't bother with a light double off the rocks.
Get hold of Stu Tripney down at Stu's Flyshop, he has the Xi2 and also has just got some Echo rods in.
