Hey Guys, fairly newbie Auckland fisher here. originally from christchurch (terrible fishing!) moved to the gold coast for a year and would never walk away with less than a bucketful of brim up there. Now im living in auckland city.

I have caught one fish in the year that i have lived here, (one baby KY at whangamata).

Was out at karekare on saturday during the day, didn't get anything but a few people were getting hits off the rocks.

Went out to Whangaparaoa last night, (heard it was the best for snapper) but i coudlnt find any decent spots, Just cast out off the beach there and din't even get a single bite (was using squid, trevelli and soft bait). Heading into orewa, and same deal really, couldnt find any rocks to go off so just cast off the sand but im sure it was too shallow for anything decent to come along.

Ended up gheading out to the Onehunga harbour (pretty packed when i got there about 9pm) stayed an hour but still no bites, one guy had pulled up a ky but that was it, there were a few eels around.

Can anyone suggest a good place around these areas to catch some keeprs? i would love to get some snapper. I usualyl get the frozen baits from the servos and thaw it out, and use a bread+sand burleigh.

Hi Ryan - welcome to Auckland/Hibiscus coast!Smile
-heres some for you mate:

1 - Orewa Rivermouth  - esp for KY
2 - The ledge at Duncansby road (just to the left of Stanmore bay)
3 - The grassed area between the Gulf Harbour inlet and the Boat ramp.
4 - Army Bay by the Pohutukawas (left of Bay)
5 - Waiwera rivermouth for KY
6  - Weiti river jetty for Snaps

Google Earth is a fantastic tool too.

All the best!

If you ever try off the beach at Karekare again, try fishing into the hole to the right of the island at low tide during change of light periods for snapper (not sure how much longer they'll be around though). If you try the same hole at low tide during the day or the very large and obvious channel about 200m further down the beach chances of a Kahawai are pretty good. Fishing off the rocks at the north end (can be dodgy) can produce the odd snapper and some pretty decent trevally, however they do often get a bit crowded with the kind of morons that will consistently cast across your line.

You should also change the bread and sand mix not much of a mix up here unless your after sprats off a wharf. .plenty of rocks to fish north not sure why you never found any ,usally the northern bch's only fish at dawn or dusk ,if you have google earth have a look .Most of the places mouser has named work (maybe) or go further north to sullivan's bay Marhurangi .keep trying you will get there a little hard of the shore to get a legal fish at the moment

Hi everyone, like Ryan, I'm a newbie wanna-be fisherman too. Moved up to Hibiscus Coast area a couple of years ago, and have caught nothing so far.

I'm looking at fishing off a wharf or similar, as I don't know the first thing about casting from rocks.  Paul / clousermouser you mentioned a couple of places that look possible for me to have a go.  Orewa rivermouth - do you mean just off the bridge that goes into Orewa from Red Beach end?  And the Weiti river jectty, is that around the Fairhaven Walk area?  (Going from Google Streetview here, I've never been down that neck of the woods)

Thanks for the advice everyone, and apologies if I'm hijacking this thread (not too sure of protocols ...)

No worries mate - we cant have you living up here and Fishless!!!

If you go to the rivermouth of the estuary, down past the rock jetty (beside the camp ground), you'll have no probs. Make sure its an incoming tide though.
Squid does well here as the current and crabs will strip your pillies in seconds.

Re the Wharf in the Weiti, its on the road that gos to the Weiti Boat club (upriver from Arkles bay) - youll see it to your left when you drive in.

Fishing is firing at the moment and NOW is the best time to get out there.

Thanks Paul, a couple of questions (spot the fishing novice here ...)

I had a look at the rock jetty at Orewa this morning on my way into work, it looks quite shallow around there.  Would the fish come in that shallow, or would you need to cast out a bit (which might cause some problems with the boaties who launch off the other side of the bridge and then make their way out past that point?)

I also saw a wooden jetty exactly opposite, on the other side of the estuary.  Would that be a good spot?

Cheers, Graham

there is a deepish channel that runs right down to the sea past the rocky jetty - the KY's run right up thru there as the tide comes in and at night you can usually watch them feeding on the sprats etc if you are standing on the bridge.

ive fished pretty much everywhere from right up past the bridge right to the mouth and the KY are everywhere.

Wait for an dusk or dawn high tide and fish it - ive done really well right by the bridge in the middle of the night on a high.

Sounds good.

Have you had any luck fishing off the road bridge itself?

yep lots - but your need to get down to the water to get hold of fish once your hooked up or you need to use heavy gear.....which aint so fun with KY.

If your keen to meet up for a fish down sometime there let me know :)

You cant go wrong casting where the channel meets the sea or a bit further up off the rocky breakwater.

Oh and Infini, I may well take you up on your offer to meet up sometime, but first I gotta try by myself so I can remember how to tie hooks etc. and not embarass myself.

The rocks at the end of Orewa are good for KY but as for snapper I would'nt expect any ones of great size, The Orewa bridge/Rivermouth can be excelent for KY mainly at night time when the lights are on seems to be the trick have caught on SP's and pillies.

I took a 8.5lb snapper 50m of the rocks in the inflatable on good friday - admittedly there is alot of smaller fish there - but there is definatley good fish to be had around that area

and dont worry the_g_man - we have all been a newbie to fishing at some stage :-P

Got my 1st 20lber of the rocks at the Nth end of Hatfields beach around on the rocks at the point many moons ago, Maybe even at the boat ramp at Hatfields a shot...caught heaps of pannies there before.
karekare is a top spot especially if you own a surf board and don't mind a short paddle to the islandLOL just make sure when you jump in the rip you paddle left and don't get pulled round the front of the islandOuch...and on the bigger tides if you paddle at high tide when it's time to leave...at Low tide... you can just about step of onto dry sand.
Piha would be my pick thoughClap

Pretty easy reallyConfused...
I guess if you have to take your whole tackle box then it can't be done, but If only take some pre tied rigs etc then it's a breeze.
Bag up your reel and all your gear and add to a small pack on your back...Attach your rod to your board using the leg rope...OOH yeah don't fish that spot when the swell is pumpingLOL
Simple aye.......The Island rocks in the summer when there's NO surf and an Easterly breeze.....Ask the LocalsWinkand don't fish the Island by yourselfDead
