Has anyone had any experience/results of the rocks with these pellets that you can buy from the Wharehouse or similar?

Planning a rockhopping trip at the Cavallis and wondering if I should buy a sack full (bit lighter to carry and less messy than normal berley)

Firstly welcome, I see you have been hanging back for a while. I bought a bag of pig pellets from wrightsons for $25 on special, and a bottle of tuna oil. It worked well and was conventent to take camping as you made up a slurry as required. It diddn't work as well as normal frozen burley which is what I take away now, in a chili bin packed with salt ice. With a bit of care it will stay frozen for a bout 3 days.

i think wefaknis is on to it - with a bit of forethought and planning - one of those big polystyrene bins you can buy, filled with salt ice and all your bait/burley will last well - certainly 3-4 days. esp. if you can mange to keep it closed for long periods of time - maybe buy several smaller ones - one for each days fishing and then only need to open them once.

or like toad says - bread, rice - anything starchy soaked in tuna oil is effective and convenient.

dont forget - kina - which shouldnt be a problem to get on the spot - very effective for snapper fishing.

Thanks guys, fan of normal frozen Burley myself, just thinking about options for a simple but efective altenative, that's easy to cart around.

The simplest alternative is to hook bait fish and mash them up or cube them  - then you don't have to carry them. They also work really well because they are what's around.

When I fished a lot in far off places and exotic destinations (read, before marrige and kids) I used to take with me some big tins of catfood, look for the ones containing pilchards in aspic. This either spooned out or mixed with some tuna oil, old bread, food scraps, crabs etc. worked a treat, no mess or smell before you opened it. This can make a great base for a DIY burley trail.

The cans can extend the life of your burley too, I normally carry out all my rubbish, but.. once or twice the cans were stuffed full of chunky, sticky burley and dropped into the tide where they released the burley a little bit slower.

I have used the warehouse dry pellets for the same reason (easier to carry). They work ok and I got a 6 pound snapps using them last time I was rock fishing. Agree with the other guys, the frozen stuff is best if possible.

what about the more solid type canned dogfood,not the runny casserole type?the more meatier chunky stuff should work,and if your really hungry.....
