I thought it a good idea, to start this thread, as an ideal way to get to know just who we are, and a brief description of ourselves, like occupation, age, where we are residing, years involved in the fishing scene, etc?  I don't want to be seen as being a nosy sod, it would just be interesting to know a little about  who we're  talking to...Obviously, many of you will have known each other for years, fished together etc, but just an idea. Be nice to be one big happy family, so feel free to contribute.....cheers.....Jim

Might as well be 1st then...Clap I'm a 57yr old retired chippie, and I'll still do the odd perk job, decks, fences, nothing too hard out, tho. I also worked for two years at the Police Dog Training centre here in Trentham, as a "handyman"and on call, as long as it didn't clash with any fishing plans.!!  I have a recently married 25 yr old daughter, my new son-in-law is a pilot, and a  flying instructor, my 21 yr old son has his own Mopar website, spends most of his nights on there, looking after it, mainly to be able to talk live with people in the States, when needing to, during  their working hours...  My wife is an accountant, and we have been married now for 28 yrs...so thats me. questions if you like....... cheers.....Jim

If I haven't said it already, (I haven't), Welcome Jim. I have enjoyed your posts over the last few weeks I have noticed them. Topics that most know something about but few no everything. You have the nack to bring out the lurkers out there, a good "E" fisho, might even be good enough to give Barrie, billfish and Squid a go when you hit full stride. Anyway I'm a 34yr old Fulltime Firefighter and Part time Painter and Decorator, married to Debbie for about 6yrs, and have 2 boys aged 4 and 2. Working two jobs, looking after the missus and spending time with the kids only lets me fish about one day in fourteen. My wife tells me I have to buy the family a house before I buy a boat so I try to grease up the generous folk on the net here to take me out on their fabulous boats by being good humoured, easygoing, generous and of course fishing hard. Welcome again Jim.

Thanx Swanie, I didn't know I was attracting any "lurkers".. Glad you enjoy my posts. As you can see by my amount of posts so far, I like to yakka on a bit, hopefully not annoying anyone too much, tho Tobes is a bit worried now, he's heading toward the grand mark, but is looking over his shoulders more now!!!  I'm still learning the ropes, as it were, as to find out how to balance rods, reels, nylon, etc. There's a wealth of knowledge in here, thats for sure...nice to have met you, Swanie, and hope your boat comes in!!

ok....

33 female getting married one day (again) ie not single, a fish and fishing nut, I work as a csr and specialise in telstra and tourismNZ. Dont bloody talk to me about telstra. I specialise in flyfishing and occasionally take casting clinics and take learners out on rivers I love fishing in general and live at the beach, unless you have a boat out here, saltwater fishing is a bit of a dud.

I keep and breed specialist tropical fish the type that need 5000 litre tanks, we do own our own house and from time to time I look at the swimming pool and wonder if I could keep fish in it.

Have 3 kids which also enjoy fishing, but to be honest I dont like fishing with them. Steve, my partner enjoys fishing but not as much as I do.

Always willing to get more people involved, tend to scare people because I dont see anythign wrong in bunkhouses and nope most definitely not interested in the opposite sex when fishing is involved.

Am not one of the bbb brigade (blonde, bolle, bikini) short, fat, crude sense of humour and I talk too much.

30 year old, cost accountant, keen on any type of fishing, own home in the Hutt Valley, well the bank actually owns most of it, a missus, and a 5 month old baby girl.

A 12 foot tinny is my usual fishing companion, but I really like surfcasting too, which is good with the local weather being the way it so often is on the weekends.  Used to get into a bit of spearfishing on SCUBA but I haven't done that for a couple of years now.  I think I've lost the balls for it and the boat thing is a whole lot easier.

Also into tropical fishkeeping (but obviously not as much as Jo, 550 litres is about all my floor and fusebox can handle!), and I love to wander around in the hills with guns.

Gidday and welcome Jim, I too have gone through your posts and have enjoyed the new energy and positive participation, good onya boy. Im only a young Fulla a bit younger than Swanie but older than Tobes, hhehehe and well drink a little to heavy as well.

I reside in Glen Eden mate, thats in West Auck where it always blows. I have a couple of little ones and a partner that Lord knows what she see's in me, we've been together 6yrs but feels like a few more!

Im a metal polisher by trade and do a bit of easy stuff part time at the local watering hole- hence the liking to a bit of drink. Ive met heaps of good dudes through this forum of ours and I say ours because we all have a place in here, so dont be shy.

Well mate Im only a simple snapper fisherman and thats all I like to specialise in, Im hard core addicted to bottom bouncing, preferbly straylining and my favourite haunts is any where around the Gulf, Us Aucklanders take it for granted but its really a previllage to to find snapper here 12months a year on ya doorstep.

Ibetter go to bed now as im starting to go over. So I hope Ive shed a bit of light on myself and will continue to help ya out where ever I can. Once again Jim- ENJOY!!

My name is Chris. I was born in ChCh in the mid 70's. I have been with my girl since I was a teenager and we are expecting our first child in March. I grew up fishing for Trout and Salmon in the Canterbury lakes and rivers and we had a boat in the Malborough Sounds. I moved to Auckland in 98 and rekindled my love for fishing through my boss at the time who was nearly as keen as I and we would knock off work early a couple of days a week to slay snapper in the gulf.

Recently I discovered the wonderful sport of gamefishing... This has changed everything!!! Snapper fishing has taken a back seat and I would sooner miss 10 snapper trips for one gamefishing trip. I just cant get enough!!!

I work in the marine industry with tobes... together we manage and maintain a fleet of charter boats. We both fish a lot. I have meet some good dudes through this forum.

I like to fish with my bro in law Vigrs, tobes, Kerren, Swanie and Bushpig. I look forward to fishing some more with AC, Pete da Squid, Lethal, Billfish, Kfsi and Barrie... all top guys probably like every one here.

Hi there everybody, well I am very new here... I am 27...started fishing when I was about 14... Originally from Malaysia, came here in 1994 and have been here ever since. I am a real estate agent (a good honest one... ;P) and fish whenever I can make time for it. Mainly surfcasting out at Birdlings flat in christchurch. Fishing is not that great down here... I would go out in a boat but I don't have one, neither do I know anyone with one... plus... I would probably get sick and throw up all over the fish!

hi, my name is marcus and im a fishaholic. They say admitting it is the hardest part. im 26, and much like Squido, am a bit of a slave to a nice bourbon.

Have been fishing on and off most of my life, but found renewed interest when i was at varsity, where i could flag lectures to go pull some snapper out of the akld harbour. Since then ive taken up a job in logistics, where the hours dictate that i only fish once a week.

Most weekends over summer you can find me in my dinghy snooping for snapper around rangitoto, motutapu and the noises area. During the winter i spend any fine weather at ruapehu enjoying my other addiction in skiing.

Failing that, you might spy me in a bar, hovering over a drink and annoying some poor young lass...

Hi all, Grant (43) Jan (yeah right) Have 2 children, son 13, daughter 11. Dairy farming nth of Hamilton. We all enjoy fishing and from a family aspect it is a great activity.

Have fished in one form or another for as long as i can remember. Earliest memories are catching fresh water cray with bullrushes and using a willow branch, some nylon, and hook to prowl the stream on my parents property in the King Country.

Introduced to salt water fishing by my Grandfather (surfcasting) and later boating when my father borrowed a twelve foot clinker dinghy. Since then there has been a boat of some description in our family. Brothers are very keen fishermen as well.

Any form of fishing appeals, whether it be eeling with the kids in a nearby stream, wharf, surf, rock or  Game .

Other interests include M-Arts which we all participate in and Performance cars. Are members of Club Lotus nz and join in club activities when time allows.

Deep down though fishing is still our favoured interest.

OK, Chris here, 52 yrs (look it but don't feel it) married to Lynda for 32 yrs (and look it !), son Sam 15 (ambivalent about fishing) daughter Katherine 12 (loves fishing).

Arrived in wonderful NZ around 18 months ago after taking early retirement from the NHS following a career of 32 years and Blair's attempts to really stuff it up (NHS and the UK). Have fished since age 5 but mainly freshwater coarse fishing so I have alot to learn about NZ saltwater fishing (yeah Barrie, I know, learn how to strayline...). Live just south of Waiuku, practically at the boat ramp on the Waikato. Have a small boat but don't get it out much (the boat), partly due to slight problems with motors and also partly due to not having someone to go out with (Lynda will but doesn't really enjoy it). Work part time in the local hospital so I have plenty of time off, mainly mid week, some of which goes on cutting over 1 acre of ruddy grass!!! Fortunately Loiner, my BIL (we married sisters, Lord help us) has a boat (bigger) and is a really keen fisho and we do get out from time to time (as you may have seen in fishing reports).

Met some great guys through this forum and hope to meet, and fish with , a few more.

hi there - 30 year old who was lucky enough to grow up with a father who was man keen on his fishing, thinking back to some of the trips i've had and fish i ahve caught makes me realise how lucky i was. grew up in napier and parents then moved to BOP. father still really keen on fishing and unfortunately i don't get down to whakatane enough to fish with him. live in wood bay titirangi (what number do u live in titters?) been here 2 years and love this part of auckland. have a 5.4m tin boat and get out snapper fishing a bit but not as much as i would like (which will never happen i spose), have a 18 month old girl. work in town in a finance job. had big plans on getting out over the manukau bar but have realised a 5.4m tin boat isn't all that big! maybe one day when the weather is perfect.

You know those photos of kids under 5 years of age holding a sprat on the wharf - I am in one one of those. Except I am now bald and more than 40 years beyond that photo but still often enjoying the wharf.

My mothers family has 4 generations of commercial fisherman fishing the Atlantic and Indian oceans from South Africa. Some were still whaling in the early 60s, others collected penguin eggs in the Antarctic (for resale), crayfished Tristan da Cunha and Vema, and fished across the Antarctic to South America. So it is in my blood. It is in my blood so bad, I have been known to take leave to work on a trawler purse-seining. Have also fished commercially with handline catching the notorius 'couta, kingies and bottom fish. A far cry from my career as I have my own business doing management consulting and project management. I now fish light tackle (mainly 4kg) having only learnt to strayline here in NZ. Best fish from boat: yellowfin (45kg) on a cube of pilchard - watched it take the bait next to the boat and then disappeared for 45 minutes. Best fish from the shore: 30kg kabeljou (mulloway). The great thing about fishing for me is that I still get a high from catching a 1kg fish on light line and I can never stop learning.

For relaxation, I regularly fish along Tamaki Drive at night with my 4 kg on a Abu 6500 and a 2-piece 7 foot Fenwick for kahawai and snapper. So if you see some bald bugger with tatty clothes and tackle that looks like toys - stop for a chat.

None of my family of two teenage kids or my wife of almost twenty years wants anything to do with boats or fishing so it has become very much a solo pursuit here in NZ, where I have been a proud Kiwi for 7 years.  In NZ, my accent is strange but when I appear as a kiwi representative anywhere else in the world, they dont know that.

In my worklife, I have travelled extensively but I always share with others about our wonderful city  to me, the greatest place in  the world to live. I have yet to find another that offers the lifestyle mix of Auckland (and fishing.net!).

Howdy, Si here. Just turned 28 (couple of days ago). Graphic designer for the past 10 years. And fishing.net news man

Born in Christchurch 1976, lived in Hamilton till I was 10, been in Auckland ever since.

Started fishing when I was a kid. Family holidays to places such as Tauranga and Kawhia. Dedicated wharf fishing kid and creek explorer. Took a long break and got back into fishing about 3 years ago after I scored a job in Westhaven, smack bang in the tackle shop district. Been dead keen ever since... plenty of rock fishing and a few boat excursions being clocked up, mostly through this awesome forum.

Goal to get my own boat very, very soon... A few other priorities to sort out first.

Yeah another Christchurch born fisher here. I'm 47 married to Sue for 13 years (but been with her, mostly, for 24years) and have three kids. Grace 11, Lucy 9, and Joss who turned 3 yesterday. I have a BIL in Lalandi who is about to increase the whanau's brood with Sue's sister. I started fishing at Redcliffs with my dad when i was 5 and wanted to fish for years after that but never really got hold of it properly until in my thirties. I confess to serious gear addiction, I have nine saltwater rods, 2 flyrods, and too many reels. I just can't help myself.....I fish as often as i can, with anyone who will come at incredibly short notice , usually in the Hauraki gulf in a Dreamboats Rayglass. I am an actor and am doing a bit of work at the moment for a doco series on Television One, called Explorers. It should screen around July following the journeys of Brunner, Heaphy, Colenso and Barrington. I love freshwater fishing and am keen to spend time in Rotorua, Rotoiti, Tarawera, and the rivers adjoining, up to my fat tum in waders, hooking those fabulous browns. I do not own my own boat, my own bach, or my own life, but when i can get out I do. I also own a share of a wee pond down Te Kuiti way and have been known to pour lead balls into the sky from my 1187 Remington. usually only on opening weekend tho. Great to meet you all this way.

While there's lead in the air, there's hope.

I am currently Auckland bound but still long for those EBOP fishing trips.

No boat (yet). Happy to try any form of fishing except fly. Hated that with a passion.

43 yrs, with wife Susan of, of, of..... damn I think I am meant to know this one. Anyway, a long time! 2 kiddies - a daughter of 3.5yrs (Hana) and a son of 4mths (Ishua). Can't tell about Ishua yet, but Hana is already showing promising signs as a budding fisho. When we are away on the boat and I pull up a fish, she gets excited & starts to talk about it being time for her dinner ie she loves fish. Used to be the 14hr days corporate executive type including a long stint in Europe. These days I  am shorts and T shirt running Dreamboats (boat hire set-up) in Gulf Harbour and Tagit Charters my (small) game fishing company. Now, where would I rather be?????

I am keen on most types of fishing/hunting and make annual pilgramages into the bush/mountains to fly-fish and hunt. Sometimes even brave the screaming masses around Taupo or Rotorua, but prefer bush campsites and the rivers. Did a couple of weeks in Alaska rafting back country rivers for salmon fishing a few years back. Try landing 50lb+ King salmon on an 8wt fly rod. Probably the highlight of my fishing life so far and recommended to anyone with adventure in their sole and a cooperative bank manager!!

Try to spend approx 10 days per year game fishing, initially in my tinny, but lately in comfort more in keeping with my advancing years. Most of my game fishing has been at Waihau Bay or in the Far North. Also like to get out on the gulf reasonably regularly to keep the family fed with fish a couple of times a week.

Have owned boats since age 18 and currently own 6 (2xdinghies, 1xcanadian canoe, 1xinflatable, 1x6m tinny, & 1x44ft game boat). Also have access to several more through Dreamboats. If you think that TAS is bad, wait to you catch BAS. Having said that, only the 6m tinny is now redundant and waiting to be sold. The others all have a useful role in keeping us (or my neighbours) on the water.

Have met a few characters from this site and even fished with a few. Hope to continue to grow that list.

Ive been a merchent seaman for 18 years, i'm 33 years old so I was only a boy when I when to sea, have travelled many parts of the world on the sea and believe me I'm always happy to see kiwi land again. Currently I'm a AB working for Silver fern shipping ( AB- (all back or hairy assed able seaman)) on the Taiko which is a 33 000 ton product carrier delievering fuel around NZ.

Worked on the game boat Crows Nest as deck hand for a season with glenn Mac farland, got my time in on a small boat so got my CLM cert, also got a ELMS, operated my Bluefin boat as a charter boat for a couple of years on my time off, after getting married and buying the house in AK the boat had to go.Have loved fishing from before I can remeber, the father was a seaman and that's where this seafaring thing comes from I guess.

These days when I'm have time off I just fart ass around at home, go fishing in the mac and on ocassions get up to toot,  brew my own beer and read fishing.net.nz.

I have a small boat and fish mainly in the Manukau Harbour. Quite happy messing arouind catching snapper gurnard kahawai and trevs. Would love to know more about trout fishing but I dont do enough of it really.... one day I may even learn how to throw a decent cast.

I used to love fishing as a kid (eels...) but gave it away more or less to practice falling off motorbikes on racetracks .... wasnt much good at that either.... but it was kind of fun when you werent scared silly. I started fishing again about 20 years ago I guess.... learning the hard way of course.

My financial situation is like an antidote for TAS .... but one day I will get the disease.

I write a newsletter for the Counties Sport Fishing Club, which only goes to prove that you really shouldnt believe all that you read.

This is a great site that has really grown over the three or four years  that I have been visiting thanks Kerren!!! Before that I was visiting an Aussie site, but not much point now.

Have met a fair few from the forum and fished with one or two. I have a little spot that I fish over winter at night for kahawai ...one of those you cant go wrong places. I dont think a single forum member I have fished with has ever caught a fish there! funny how it works lke that aye.

The best thing about fishing with people from here is that they all know how to bait their own hooks and arent frightened to take the hooks out of fish. Luxury to a father of 4 small boys, well only one small one now I guess.

What I enjoy about this forum is the way people are so willing to share their knowledge and believe me there are some clever cookies here.

Thanks a lot guys.

Hey snapatak...your skip on the taiko a mad gunners fan?

Think i owe him a pair of shorts from when we spent time on the Kakariki. Got to drive that lifeboat thing off the ramp, what a buzz! His name currently eludes my fuzzy memory...

I am Trent, originally from Piha Beach, Auckland

I am 26 years old, and single, and no kids (that I know of!!)

I was born into fishing really, couldnt help it when my dad was a fishing nut as well, and throughout my youth, I would take every possible opportunity to go fishing.

When I lived in town, I would ride down to Blockhouse Bay every weekend (after rugby of course) and fish there.  Never really caught that much come to think of it!

I now live in London, and sometimes pine to get back to New Zealand and go fishing, but for me, living here is a means to an end, and I guess I gotta do the hard yards sometime.

Still that doesnt stop me from being on this site everyday and reading all the posts!

Most memorable fishing moment?  My last one!  Fishing with my Dad, back in New Zealand out of Mahurangi Harbour on the 15th of Jan this year.

Good fish, good beer, good mate!

Wefaknis,

Hi I'm Wefaknis, Ive been sober now for 2 hours. I'm 28 years old, 2.5 children, I live In South Auckland (watch your wallet), Been fishing ever since I can remember, I'm a small boat fisherman so it's the inner harbour for me. If I'm not boating, i'm dirtbiking, so Ive got two black holes to pour any last money into. I must say its fishing that comsumes my small mind.

Oh yeah I'm not in the 20lb club yet, close but not yet.

I must say this fourm has improved my fishing greatly over the years cause of people like yourselves who share all this info.

Cheers

Howdy all.
.this thread looked like the best place to put my 1st post so here I go....
.I`m from Golden Bay and am known as Squid.
Was actively involved in the inshore fishing industry until 2 years ago when an accident put me on shore on a permanent basis.
I now design and make the HAPPY HOOKER range of lures for the commercial tuna fleet. Two years ago there were only 30 lures in use, now there are over 500 in use this season, with requests for more. The beauty of it is, it keeps me involved in the industry and lets me catch up on old friends.
I have three sons who also are active on the water.
My main interests are fishing , fishing, and fishing ,in that order.
Looking forward to getting to know you all.
Cheers
A.

Nobody cares, but:

Hi I am Marc. I'm an American from da great state of Kaliforania. I am 28 and happily married to a hot little Kiwi chick who was crafty enough to drag me down here. (Yes my wife does fish too.) I wasnt too keen on this place at first but it's growing on me. Once I get past driving on the wrong side of the road, your thing for Marmite, and the rain, you Kiwi's are alright.

We don't have any kids yet which enables me to get out and fish more frequently than most, so be jealous, BE VERY JEALOUS!

My homie "Master Limitless" has been teaching me how to fish from a Kayak this last year and every time I/we pull up to the beach or ramp, people look at us funny and say "You must be keen bro! Arent you worried about sharks?"

I'm more afraid of larger boats near me and yes sharks do scare me. In fact the first fish from the Kayak was an 8ft bronze whaler.

I am a grease monkey by trade so if you busted up your ride and cant get a WOF don't ask me cause I just might overcharge you for the information.

Welcome

Date Posted: 01 Feb 2004 at 8:51am

Haven't contributed much lately due to a busy season thanks to some great weather patterns. I'm Jeremy 35 married to Tash for the last 4 or so years and work play and sleep fishing. I'm the Auck / Nthlnd rep for Black Magic and am lucky enough to fish a few times a week.....no kids obviously. Been with BM for 1 and a half years and can safely say that I love my job and enjoy learning every day.

Have owned a 14ft Ramco for 6 years and had a V13 for 5 before that. Will probably never go bigger than my current boat as living in Auckland don't really see the need. We're in Bucklands Beach so able to get boat in the water in 20 mins for those spur of the moment trips.

I'm pretty much into all types of fishing and travel a bit obviously with the job to some pretty interesting spots. Very occassionally get large fish but the buzz to me is just being out there doing it.

Enjoy this forum and its reports - Kerren and co do a great job.

Pet hates - boats in the burley trail, immigrant ignorance, Half Moon ramp on Anniversary day, Auck motorway congestion and any form of fishing with a net - bar a landing net for livies or squid.

HellFish, marmite's a good thing aslong as you don't smear it on like jam.

My ex pat kiwi cousins living in yankee land came over for a holiday years ago and they smeared it on in big dollops... no wonder they screwed their faces up.

It also makes a good sunblock, you should try it sometime!

Tim the Eagle - actually Tim but at 6'5" I generally get the birds eye view on most things.  40 years young and married to Karen for 15 - she is a keen scrap booker and less keen fisher women now that she is a mother to our three lovely children - 2 girls 6 and 5 and a boy 2.  At this stage they are very keen at fishing off a wharf.   We have a Buccaneer 510 and we live in Green Bay by Titirangi but I generally fish on the Waitemata apart from on family holidays - BOI, Whitianga, Whangaroa.  In fact our eldest was almost miscarried after a rough trip back across to Tapeka Point coming back into Russell so Karen hasn't spent a lot of time on the boat since but mainly due to lack of time once the children were on the scene.  I too am keen to try the Manukau but have a healthy respect of bars and don't have an auxillary.  Also very keen to go on Charters targeting fish that my little boat would struggle to get to.  Am looking forward to having enough keen fishos to get these trips going as most of my immediate friends, family and work colleagues aren't interested enough to spend several days not to mention the dollars on fishing trips but thats their problem e.g. Ranfurly Banks, Three Kings - hapuka, kingis, tuna and big snapper.  Haven't tried game fishing yet but all in good time and may get a taste for it on the trip on Tagit in early March.  Always impressed at how well we do on the Waitemata compared with some of my family holiday trips away.  I think it helps that we can dawn and dusk fish out there whereas that doen't always fit in when you are on holiday away and it takes a little while to get to know your way around a new area without it being in the dark too.

I am an ex farm boy, ex Chemical Engineer who started at the Refinery, went to London with Karen for four years and am now being monstered by computer systems for my sins - winning the battle most of the time.  Really enjoying the forum and meeting people from all walks of life.  At first I thought we might all be computer victims (sorry Kerren) especially after going out with Joseph who at the time from memory told me over the phone that he worked for Turners and Growers - I pictured him humping boxes of vegetables around only to find that he was actually a web developer for them but that has all changed now too.

I think we are now at the point where we need the badge (hats would be too obvious), the funny hand shake and the codes to exchange so that I don't have to keep asking people whether they are from the forum at boat and tackle shops and getting odd looks - haha    This can only get better - which is not to say that it isn't great already.

Cheers Tim

Qualified Jacko?

I dont think anyone here has a PhD in fishing although I think one or two come close.

The best way to contribute to this site is to ask questions, and people with knowledge in that area will help you out PLUS you get a range of opinions, you also get stuff from people like me but just ignore that stuff aye .

It is good to hear from you guys that are relatively new or arent as active in posting.

Dont be shy now....

Thought i'd add my 2c  worth. Paul- 30 something , wife Anne who loves fishing and 3 kids who don't(I wish they had TAS , coz I'm sure it would be a cheaper and far more enjoyable mechanism to offload all my cash).Sport a jaapie accent but born in Waikato , raised in Hawkes Bay to 3rd form then off to South Africa till Y2K.

First fishing memories at the Iron Pot in Napier and at my grandad's bach in Pukehina.

Didn't touch a rod in Africa until ,  one awesome encounter with an 11lb Tigerfish on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. Was fishing for bream with light gear and a worm.

A holiday in Opito Bay , Coro end of 2000 got the wife hooked on fishing followed shortly after by the boat purchase.

Sold boat last year & bought a house, but have been enjoying the fishing from our yaks at Martins Bay where we have a caravan.(caught more snapps off the yaks over the Dec /Jan period than 2 years on the boat)

Joined the 20lb club in Dec during a visit to the Mokes on RnR & revalidated membership the day after on same trip. Looking forward to repeating this feat on my yak.

Really enjoy this forum - have learnt a lot.

I am Joseph and I originally came from Malaysia. Spent 8 years in Melbourne for my high school and University, went back to Malaysia for 8 years, and migrated to N.Z. 5.5 years ago. Met my wife when I was 20, married her when I was 29, and been married for 10 years with 2 daughters 1 and 6 yrs old. Been out fishing with Barrie, Tim, Smudge, Andrew, Kerren, El Squido, Hansen (haven't heard from him for quite a while), Damian, have met lalandi, AC (at an open home, by the way, that property went for $265K), and a fair few others whom I have forgotten the name. Now I live at Hillcrest on the North shore of Auckland

I started fishing in the little creek behind Kelston and moved on to Mission Bay wharf, fisherman's wharf, Cornwallis wharf, and also tried Whatipu (killer return trip if you catch some fish), Muriwai (nearly swept off the rocks so have given up rock fishing for boat fishing) and Matapouri Bay.

Got a plastic dinghy for my first boat, used it to fish Browns Bay reef for a year before switching to the current 12 ft fiGlass, which lets me fish the lighthouse, Rangi channel, harbour bridge, sugar factory etc. Probably would keep it till the end of this year before getting a bigger boat. Problem with fishing is that you tend to want to catch bigger and bigger fish, so it is sort of like a hobby with a black hole where more and more money were poured into it.

Married and father of a 2 yr girl. In fact, I bought her a toy fishing reel the other day to start her off young. Although I've been fishing for more than 15 yrs, I still consider myself as pretty inexperienced so please don't take me seriously! More of a land based fisho than a boatie. I've learnt more than I've contributed to this forum so thanks y'all! The occasional flame postings can be quite entertaining reading too! Day job in IT and I work overlooking the harbour- although I try not to get too distracted by the people  fishing over at the Overseas Terminal- honest!

Every other weekend will see me with a bunch of my mates usually fishing in the evans bay area. We have a "club fund" thing going where if you don't catch a fish (spotties and undersized fish not counted), you pay a fine, and if you land a "club record" fish, you pay a fine too. This makes it more interesting and contributes towards bait and equipment for the gang.

Oops been meaning to post in here so here goes.....my name is Andrew (bet you never guessed that), I'm 31 and recently got engaged to my partner of nearly 5 years, and live in Balmoral in Auckland. My partner will tell you that I'm addicted to fishing.....and of course shes never wrong!!! I record music for a living and own my own studio in town and hence get out midweek when ever I can. My other interests include fishing, cricket and fishing. I've got a 14'6 ramco which is great for me cause I go out a lot on my own. Haven't been game fishing or fresh water fishing yet but I know I'll be hooked as soon as I start. Spend most of my time straylining for snapper in the Hauraki and get up North or to the Coromandel when I can. I also suffer deeply from TAS..............

Been reading the posts in this thread and getting a mental image of every one, thought I had better take the coat off and contribute.
Name is Mike Cook 38 years old and live at Otaki Beach, Married (second time round) and have 2 premo daughters aged 4 and 11.
Have been a Manager for a plastic production based company for the last 8 years and lived in town all my life, off and on.
Have done all the sports, rugby, basketball, squash, surfing, etc and still play social volleyball. Fishing has now become the number one recreational activity, white baiting, floundering, land based or boat fishing Im in.
Sold the boat a year ago to help build a beach bach and now rent it out for holiday accommodation, hope to be back in the market for another boat in the near future, (definitely getting a stabi).
Spend a heap of time over at Kapiti island at a mates bach and have been thinking for a while might have to get a weekend forum trip teed up in the future.
Would contribute more to this site, but being a one finger typist the questions are generally asked and answered long before I can type it out.
Love the place, in and out of the site as many times as possible.
If your around this neck of the woods, front doors always open.

Hi all. Back again. Sorry about the lack of posts but am a builder and travelling heaps at the moment. I think Mrs Crusader and the kids have been checking the site off and on. The name is Ian, 52 years old, wife Dianne, three sons 20, 22, 24. Brought up in Picton and started fishing for whitebait off the wharves, gnarfish at nite with a spotlight from a dinghy. Heaps of pig hunting. It was great then moved to Christchurch at the age of 14 and the only fishing to be done was surf casting at Birdlings Flat, the odd boat trip from Akaroa and Lyttelton. Not really exciting stuff. Then met my present wifeand it turned out she had property in Lochmara Bay in Queen Charlotte Sounds and we have been going there quite regularly since. Took up scuba diving in the early 70's and dived often all over NZ from Wainui Bay in the B.O.I. to Stewart Island. I now have my own boat and try to get out as often as I can including going to the lakes (as well as the odd river or two) for a bit of trout/salmon fishing. "Barrie" have 5 salmon so far this season. C'mon down. Am a member of the Amateur Sports Fishing Society and get out with them heaps - I think there is team up north at the moment on Harlequin - so may ask if anyone has any news on their progress. I will be heading out tomorrow, Wed, and Friday for the Shark Hunt.

Cheers all

Crusader

Ps I see there are a few more red and blacks in the forum, hope to make contact with some of you - there is always a space on my boat for a keen fisho.

My turn.

My name is Shane Kelly, 48, married to my long suffering wife Lindsey, and we have two boys aged 17 and 14. Been fishing since my mum used to take us with green cotton hand lines off Oerwa Bridge and Puhoi wharf. Used to row out off Orewa beach in my 7ft wooden dinghy (with my mum - she really is a cracker) and catch snapper and gurnard during the summer. I still have that boat.

Spent about 8 years overseas from 21-29, then got back into fishing with a mate in a 12ft dinghy off Long Bay. Started with a trout spinning rod (I was very fond of trout spinning at Aniwhenua in those days too) and gradually worked my way up.

I was editor of Sea Spray Magazine from 1987-1992 and got know know some very fine fishing people and many in the boating industry. I worked for the Furuno fishing tournament for 4 years (96-2000) organising sponsorship, prizes, advertising, media and various other stuff - anyone who attended the tournament would have seen me working around the stage looking stressed).

I did mostly yacht racing in those days but gradually the hankering to go fishing became stronger and I gave up yacht racing in 2000. For fishing boats, I've had a 12 ft Ramco, then a  bought a 13ft 8in Allicraft and bought Bender, a Ramco 560 Outsider with Yamaha 90 powerplant, in October 99.

I've been privileged to fish with some fine people, including gamefishing trips with Bill Mackrell from Ramco and Mike Hodson from ENL. I learned a lot from them but have not yet been attached to a marlin., The gamefishing bug has now bitten...hard. The dream is to land a marlin on bender.

I'm pretty particular about my gear, love buying new stuff, and have spent countless hours on bender setting the boat up to be fishing-friendly. It also gets used for family picnics, snorkling trips, and water sports, so it's a good allrounder.

I have my own public relations company which was, until last week, based in Westhaven, Auckland, but we have now moved up the hill to Ponsonby.

You may have gathered by now that I like to bang on, and I am working on getting my 1000th post today. Then I'm going to shut up. Promise.

I enjoy this site, the on-line camaraderie and the information. You can get a long way up the learning curve here, thanks to the generosity of some bloody good blokes.

Thanks all, for your patience and mateship.

Names well....... Kylie,  but for all you people who I haven't met I do own a full set of tackle .

Am happily married to Kelly(at least when I'm catching more fish than her) and am 28yrs old. Live in Auckland but both my wife and I do most of our fishing out of the coromandel / Bay of Plenty.  I work in the IT industry as a sparky / Data network engineer.

As far as the fishing goes, I prefer shimano gear as a personal preference,  but also own a hodge podge of Silstar, ryobi, penn and noname brands as well.  I really have enjoyed this site although lately work has had me flat out so this is my first post since the end of last month.

Oh well, it has to quiten down soon

Cheers

Kylie

Hello, I'm Nick, Account Director from Auckland. I haven't made too many posts since I joined this forum in '02, but am planning to, that's for sure. It's a hoot! And quite educational at times. I'm married to the long suffering Marcia who refuses to spawn with me until I give her more attention that my Tiagra/Sage/Black Bart Marlin Candy/Beretta etc. You can see that I play in both fresh and salt water and in between I shoot fowl, so it's kinda busy. Yet to nail first marlin, last opportunity saw Rick Pollock giving me an absolute serve as I stood transfixed to spot with estimated 130kg stripy thrashing 10 metres off stern. Failed to set hook. Gah. Am member of 20lb + snapper club and 10 lb + trout club (imperial measurements are sooo much better). Live on North Shore, seems to be home to Koi Carp now, so something else to go out and nail.

Cheers
Nick

Bender, did you find any secretly hidden notes referring to spot X's, in the garage or shed, up in the rafters or behind old calendars left up on the wall?

Bushie - you forgot Swashbucklers, though my new offices are perilously close to an Irish pub called Pog Mahones. They do a demon sausages mash and gravy lunch, I'm told, and I just might try it out today.

I have to say I was very impressed with matakana House on Saturday - it was the first time I've ever been there. I'm keen to try that rural pub dining room - a huge roast dinner and all the trimmings.

You keen on a fish tomorrow arvo? Things are shaping up.

Toerag Alias Richard.  40 years young, Fishing since I was about 9 on dinghy's with the ole man off Bucklands beach and Maraetai (AKL).  Got right into it about 1988 when I bought my first boat.  Also got into diving the same time.  Got my first hook into real fishing when I organised a charter on Pursuit back in 92.  Have done regular sojourns with Rick ever since. Learnt heaps and still learning skills to give yourself the best chances.  Don't think we ever know what a fish is really gonna do.  My wife worked out early on in the piece that to see me she had to spend time on the boat so she also became a fisho. She had her dive ticket before me so already a watersports nut.  Helps a lot with TAS guys, although one time I bought this rod and reel combo, hid it in the garage for 6 months, was boasting about it to my father outlaw and Jayne just happened to walk in the garage at the same time.  No guessing whose Rod and reel combo it is now and who isn't allowed to touch it apart form maintenance.  Learnt the 'secrets from wife' lesson the hard way.  Just joined the MSC and looking forward to the fishing future.
