Ok some advanced warning this time, apparently set to air this Thursday:
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/497100/2178097 - http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/497100/2178097
I bet they'll focus on the death/danger/suicide aspect a fair bit. But
there should be some great footage from the Egypt comp (40m vis, good
cameras and multiple divers filming), I haven't even seen it yet. Pete
Cronshaw was right into it and had a pretty good understanding of what
it was about, so it won't be one of those frustrating docos where they
don't have a clue about the sport they're describing.
They say they also have some good blackout footage to include, I wonder which of us will get the honours...?

I hope they don't have either of mine, but I strongly suspect they do :(
Kathryn's Taupo depth BO is a sure thing, then maybe some from the WCs?
|
Posted By: Mullins
Date Posted: 07 Oct 2008 at 1:18pm
Yeah, I expect they'll have K's BO on there. They also have footage of
Ant's BO and Will's samba from WCs, and possibly those of other
competitors although I don't think Debs filmed much aside from our
dives.
AIDA NZ will have the footage of your BO and also surface footage of
mine from the Blue Hole, the question is whether Fran handed it over or
not.... :)

Flicked between the swimming with sharks thing on prime and 20/20 hoping to catch it. Will try again next week.
I dunno about some of those shark guys. Seems to me they are taking risks.

Sorry about that, I should have mentioned it probably wasn't on but wasn't 100% sure what their scheduling was.
The guy talking about his spiritual connection with Bull sharks was a bit much.

I was flickn between the two as well. That program on prime was like you say, a bit much. That new camera they use to put inside your body on 20/20 had amazing clarity. obviously waterproof and small enough to mount on your gun. If only it could run off batterys!

Could mount it on the tip of a spear! That would be a great slow-mo shot.

The TVNZ website says it is on this Thursday (at the moment anyway - it said so for a while last week as well).

Yeah saw the ad for it today. Should be this week as it takes up more than half the ad.

Haven't seen the ad but it sounds like they are indeed going to play up
the Freak/Deathwish/Danger side quite a bit. Ahh well. Deep diving is
tough and a very unpleasant thing to put yourself through so I wasn't
about to make up pleasant stories about it. I was at pains to point out
the actual risk is small, however. Let's see if that bit makes it to
air.....

Haha, yeah that was Fran - it was a big one though eh! We'd been filming over the top of it for half an hour and it hadn't moved, so we talked her into shooting it.
Torcea, I was going to ask you about that rock! Would need pretty still water and good vis for 72 metres but still do-able. Very keen to see what's lurking down there...

Fran's account of weight-loss was a bit wayward. It's more to do with acidosis (lactic acid in particular causing high blood acidity) that breaks down muscle, plus the overall inefficiency of anaerobic metabolism means you use heaps of calories. But hey, it's still weight-loss...

Dave that was a really nice report, they could of butchered it but they didn't. Kathryn will be stoked being a tv star! Noticed the silver suit wasn't you.... thought it may have been Nick !
Little bit worried all these 16 year old girls will start drowning themselves to get thin! Amazing how not many fat freedivers but plenty of fat spearos... did some breathing exercises last night and struggled to find my ribs let alone feel my backbone through my stomach as Fran demonstrated!

Also...
I thought it was good how you described the feeling of being deep. Freediving gets romanticized a fair bit and the footage looks graceful and I think its easy for people to assume its just holding your breath, a bit uncomfortable but otherwise quite nice for a trained diver, which isn't accurate.
Not that I have ever been really deep. But I can imagine it gets pretty crazy down there from the diving that I have done. It seems other deep divers talk of mystical connections with the abyss and all that but you don't often hear about how it feels in practical terms. Was nice to hear a different perspective..

Bull: i take it as a compliment
Mullins: Aleisha was saying how skinny you were and thought the camera made you look alittle shorter, then I told here that it wasnt you, it was either Ant or Will!! I guess when youve got a mask on, the general public can't realy tell who's who.
Kathyns BO was pretty calm, she looked pretty dead to me for a awhile.

thanks Reid, you don't look too shabby either for a daddy of two also. guess i should have added breath holding AND looking after kids keep you in shape.
The camera men were telling me how they needed the wide angle lens just to fit me in. guess they needed the long angle lens for lanking boy there.
Cheers Dave.

Would any of the more tech savvy here be able to slap this on bittorrent? I can't seem to view this from the link and it's probably a keeper anyway. Also when it's on tvnz wont be able to view from here in Oz (NZ only IP's).
Anyway, looking forward to watching this. Cheers
