Back when I was a kid I use to make small burley pots out of film canisters with a few wholes through them and stuffed with fish scraps. Would attach them to my swivel via a snap and cast out so that I had some burley action right near the bait. Use to make it easy to cast unweighted baits too

PAUL forget the waratah just use a piece of plastic 60ml pipe lenght depending on how high you want the holder ,work that in to sand works fine and also works well on rocks easy to jam in some where

or to take it one step further...
Piece of PVC pipe (gotta love this stuff!) with a short length of concrete rebar hose clipped on to it for those teeny, tiny cracks in the bricks.
After leaving one behind, I made a rush job for a trip and it was only duct taped on and is still going after three years.
For fishing livies, a small carabiner on the end of your anti-freight train tether will slide down and sit nicely at the bottom of the rebar giving a good strong anchor point (if your tether is long enough)

At low tide, bury your weighted berley bomb in the sand, run length of cord back to HT line.
Once enough water has covered it, give the cord a yank and pull the berley out of the sand. It'll sit there doing its thing, and an occasional pull on the cord will give another puff of goodies into the water if you want to.

- Use a rolled sheet of 2 ply bathroom tissue as impact shield on your surfcasting ledger rig.. they bust out when wet. I can give further details on this if anybody is interested.
- You can use worn out spark plugs as weights.
- The cork from a wine bottle can be put thrugh the trace just above the bait to make it float above the bottom.

I like this idea alot paulylovesfishing, can easily make it adjustable too, by using a wing nut and a runner for the bolt to go through at the bottom to change the angle of the rod tip to the water, might have to make some of these up I think, cheers

Only 30 eh . . . . . . . . . oooohhh I wish I was only 30 again.
That idea of buring your burly in the stand does work reall well. Need some weight in the bag or a bit of folded over rebar stuck into the sand to stop in coming back in too soon.

From experience - it probably wouldn't hurt to whack a 12/0 hook onto the bugger too.
Only 30 eh? Wait til you get to the filthy forties.... Things really start sagging. Forget trying for that six-pack gut and settle for a keg

Ive found some times using a tennis ball threaded on my trace when
surfcasting/rock fishing, keeps the bait up of the sand/rocks and away
from the crabs etc ,also provides a good weight for casting.

i was thinking about when burleying on the edge of a tidal drop off that you fish when teh tide rises, that it's not cool to leave your nylon bag out there, as in most cases you won't be around to collect a the next low tide. HLD's idea, with the rope to retrieve is good, but I thought that if you could get, or learn to make a flax waeve burley bag, that you could secure it in place and then no worries about losing it or leaving it in the sea.
Fished the tairua estuary edge on the weekend for lots of kahawai and one big bust off, fought like a trev, but appeared that the trace was bitten??? Untold eagle rays cruised the edge in packs at low tide, unbelievable amounts. Not sure I would want to burley there and attract all the rays

Kingiman have used a tennis ball before work's well and give's you a good casting distance when useing a light bait.just screw a small screw through a small swivel in to t/ball and slip through trace ,have used in surf to good effect as well

Tennis balls also come in handy for securing your berley bag when you're fishing off the rocks.
Drill hole through tennis ball, thread berley rope through, deploy berley and wedge tennis ball in rock crevice. You can adjust the amount of line out by tying a stopper knot where the line exits the tennis ball

so the tennis ball acts as a full float and the bait sits what ever depth you set it to and you watch the tennis ball to detect bites?
i don't have much to share, except maybe marking you gaff with the minimum lengths for fish, 25, 27, 30 and 75 cm that way it's always there and saves bringing extra gear (gaff always goes fishing with me, don't always need it, but if you need it and don't have it you really kick yourself)

A bit like Hairy little dwarf's idea but here goes -
Fishing 90 mile beach we used to arrive at low tide and walk out as far as we could with x4 tins of "Chef" cat food after we'd poked many holes in them. We'd bury them in the sand and fish over them when the tide rose. Worked a treat. Can't say it was very green though. But at least those tins would rust away.

This is an idea of my mate Kevin's, which he used to use when he lived up North. Not strictly a surfcatsing idea, but used to catch fish in the surf. It's simple but hard to explain.
At low tide, wade in the sea and deposit a heavy weight (he used the weights out of sash windows) as far out as you think good fish will be at high tide, say 60m. Drop another one about 80m up the beach, the same distance out in the surf.
Then rig up a line going from your high tide spot on the the beach, directly out to the first weight, though a loop attached to the weight, then parallel to the beach, through the second weight, then back to the beach. At high tide you attach your hooks and bait to the line, get a mate to pull on the other end, and your hooks are dragged out to the first weight, by now 50m out to sea. Your mate then attaches his hooks and bait to his line, and you pull your end. Hopefully by then you'll have some fish on your end, which you deal with as the fish get hooked on his hooks. Then just continue. You can also attach some berely to the weights as you drop them out at low tide.
Been meaning to have a go, but you need a half day buggering about the beach. Hasn't happened for a while.

Another trick we used when fishing depended on the bottom. If it was particularly rocky and likely to loose a lot of sinkers then we'd tie with a rubber band a couple of spark plugs, and use those for sinkers. Also when the current isn't big but you wanted a bait out wide we'd use thick small size paper bage full of sand or stones (whatever you find locally) mixed up with some scrap bait (when the bag breaks the contents become ground bait). This was all cast out and the bag would get soaked quickly thus breaking up and the hook would now be free. Made some excellent catches this way.
