With the bad weather on Sunday, missing the great weather on Monday , I made a decision at 10.30 last night, I am going no matter what for a Tuesday morning session!
Yes! as most of you readers will know, on a jetski and others may wonder how practical could it be as a fishing platform? These are even more suited for a solo mission, when everyone else is at work and no crew to be found. It didn't take long to prepare at first light, I was packed and the ski was in the water within half an hour of getting out of bed.
The conditions were great, almost glass, untill passing Motuihe and heading for the Noises where the wind was a little stronger. Still an awesome ride out there, all the way to the 31 metre hole on the far side of the Noises. It didn't take long and there was plenty of interest to the plastics, seem to smaller Snapper and this did not help with an old jig, not being sharper enough, as I kept on loosing them.
By 8.15am, I moved around to the Haystack, which had alot of activity for me a couple of weeks ago. Once again it did not let me down , just better again, there was plenty of sign on the finder and hits to match. Good old 5" Nuclear Chicken was working again and a few nice pannies were added to the chilli bin. I was concerned it may be a waisted trip with no burley, but results were, constant activity with out it! Had quite a few drifts around this area ranging from 24 metres back to 13 metres, right on the Haystack, the jetski is great! you have the confidence to move close to the wash with reliability for quick start up to achieve another rewarding drift.
Once I ran out of Nuclear Chicken, I randomly tried the 5" Bloody Jerk Shad, this was even better again, a lot more interest. The fish weren't huge, only ranging from 370mm to 450mm, (not overly fat yet) I am sure they will be better in the next month!
With a few fish in the bin, I tried some other areas to see if things had changed with the fish coming in! In between this quickly nipping out to the Ahaaha's to get only a few hits.
Once back at Maria, I tried a few drifts at 23 metres and got a couple more Snapper for the family and a fist for me on the plastic a John Dory!
With the rain coming, I decided to head back as I had enough fun and fish for one day. This could be the only downer of these fishing platforms - to and from jetskifishing without goggles. The rain in your face at 90 kph makes you think twice to purchase the right gear!
Stopped for another quick fish, until the rain had passed, then the day cleared up again.
Headed back to Bucklands Beach ramp, what a great trip out, well worth the morning off!
The fish are back biting and taking the plastics , no smelly bait or burley used today! The news of the day was, the fish did not stop biting, from the time I got there, till the time I left! 6 good Snapper and 1 John Dory to take home, a great result for another fun trip.
Try the buzz of jetskifishing if you get a chance. As I often experience at the ramp, there is growing interest of more people wanting to utilise their jetski for fishing. PM me if you would like know more about rigging a jetski for Summer.

Awesome!
How much fuel do you reckon you used for the mission?
------------- What's the cheapest type of meat? Dear balls. They're under a buck.

Damn I hate having responabilities and mortagaes etc to pay, Geeze how I long for a mid week fish, looks like its going off at the moment.
Well done Andrew but the weekends seem my lot at the moment, Students dont appreciate it when there Tutor dosent turn up and the boss hates it more. Still a great report you must have had fun. This weekend is looking real good for me as SWMBO wants a little ly in, Pweeh off fishing on my Yammie. Wow cannt wait, the work ups off the bay at present are huge and heaps around as well Im told.
Watch that Wifey of your mate as she will commandeer that PWC and you will have to get another. It sure is the way to go now isnt it.
Still Graeme wants to get out in the Haines as well so who knows maybe just maybe I smell a fishing filming trip comming up. Yeh

I would estimate no more than $40, it looks our Yamaha 160 Horse used around 20 litres and I was on the water for most of the morning. Left from Half Moon Bay to the far point of the Noises, back to the Haystack, all around the Noises again, out to the Ahaaha's, back to the Marias, back to Bucklands Beach ramp via Motuihe.
Yes! Lots of cruising around, checking out what is happening for future sessions, heaps of fun going spot to spot

Derek, life is to short, take a day off, if you are the boss, I am sure there is plenty of excuses, something along the the lines of fresh fish research and development for Sweet Thai Chilli So many plugs for your sponsors By the way, where is our Sweet Thai Chilli and Avacado Oil , we are still waiting
We are planning a trip up your way very soon, you will need a full fuel tank, we are attempting to find the big work ups with the mad dive bombing gannets. You might need a rain coat for all the bird sh.t
If you are keen, let me know, it will be a full day, at this stage at least 4 PWC's , will be a great fun day! We are still not sure about the whales though, there will be a few laughs and some good fishing.

Yes, it definetly has the fuel economy on our Yamaha FX HO 160, it has a 70 litre tank and speed of up to 100kph fully rigged( about 4 hours of cruising range in average sea conditions). As you say conditions need to be good and necessary safety equipment, along with another couple of ski's for a trip of that distance. We are considering a trip of that distance after completing our Mayor Island trip from Waihi Beach this Summer .
P.S. most of the PWC's have storage that could be used for emergency fuel if required.

nice one andy, the JD was a good score...
40 litres eh... for 160hp thats not bad. My boat which only has a 90 uses marginally more than that.
I know a guy who used to bring a ski out from Leigh to the Barrier for a while there.... He even sunk it on a mooring & parked it on the bottom of the bay for a night It was a big HP Seadoo with the big grunta Rotax in it....

Thanks Karl, the JD was the first for me on the plastics. The fuel consumption is only 20 litres on the ski, you boat is looking a bit thirsty now
Let me know if you are heading out soon.

I recon this Saturday morning, from the Bay or even the Gulf harbour ramp if the weather is ****ty I am supposed to be getting my Piaaza Wood fired oven in this weekend though so if that turns up then no go.
Next weekend is demo time at the Hamilton Boat Show if any one is down that way call in. Stand 17 or there abouts and Yes Andrew I WILL HAVE MY Thai sweet chili with me. OK Bender???
You guys get out andf enjoy it while you can cause the big guns are getting ready to blast em, The Big B from Yamaha and his mate Amateur tell me the waters gettin warmer, so they think its good enough to come for a fish.
