Hi all,

I bought a Shimano Backbone 24kg-B last year with a TLD25. I haven't really used it apart from putting a couple of lives out with no joy.

Just starting to think about summer (When it arrives!!!) and want to target kingfish (Yet to catch one yet apart from a few rat kingi's) and it has got me thinking about getting the gear right for a "decent" kingi . . .

How do I set up the correct drag level and what amount should be on it. I am running 34kg braid (I think?)

. . .. got to get some use out of it this year before the misses wonders why it still looks so new . . .
any help would be great.

Thanks DORJAM

Usally you would set the drag to one third of the line weight. But in your case the line weight in higher than the rod rateing . So I would only set the drag to one third of your rod rateing (8kg) or you might destroy your rod. To set the drag put the rod in a boat rod holder, attach the line to a fish scale (the ones that leave the indicator at the highest weight are good) put the reel in gear and pull the line with the scale in the same direction that a fish would untill the drag slips. Check weight and adjust drag then continue untill the drag setting has been reached.

Hey XTSAE,

I thought it was something along those lines . . . cheers . . I'll give it a crack this weekend . . . fingers crossed this weather settles down . . . I'm over not fishing and the boat has too many cob webs on it.

Thanks again
