I have 2 spools for my 6/0 Duel (24 & 37) and I'm looking for a rod to match (compromise). I had a Pakula Excalibur, which was a lovely rod, but it broke and now have 24 and 37 rated rods. I want to be able to travel with just one rod, one reel but 2 spools. Any recomendations for a suitable rod?

Roy, why not consider a custom Calstar or Seeker? Choose a fast action blank like a Calstar 6455 XH with a detachable aftco butt. That way the rod breaks down into 2 travel-friendly pieces. Ginger at Barton Marine in Wgtn is one person making these types of rods. See Terry @Smart Marine, he has access to custom Calstars also. Prices are around $1000 though. You could have another Christmas prezzie!

If they are only half as good as everyone says they are then you have to treat yourself to a 50 Tournament Shortstroker by Ian Miller!
One thing is for sure, although I don't know much about standup fishing the heavier line classes, if you want to really fish 80 to the max you need a somewhat different class and style of rod, shorter, with the Wind On Aftco rollers and maybe a short bent butt. Needless to say you need to really know what you're doing when fishing with gear like that. Whereas with a heavy 50 I prefer a longer rod about 5' 8" to about 6' or about 6' 2" with a straight butt (easier to tease a fish with) for travelling probably a straight aluminium butt (Aftco or Pacific Bay) - I haven't seen every standup blank out there but I like the Seeker TS-60XH or 55XH blank, I don't like an extreme radical fast taper, more of a medium fast taper with some stiffness in the tip. You already have/had a rod that you like so that's half the battle, just test rods till you find one that acts similarly.

Hi Roy,
We have two versions of our Montague signature series rods that would foot the bill for 24/37.
Montague Carbon fibre 24 is a blank thats custom rolled for us with an extra wrap of glass cloth and will fish up to 37kg line
Its decked out with a straight eva butt (or curved mini unibutt), Full length leather fore grip and Gold Tich ring guides
Or if Father Christmas looked after you and dropped off a wad of cash then our Signature Series rods built on Graphite USA blanks
Montague Graphite USA extreme 50/80
Curved short unibutt (Standup), Full Length leather grip, and Alutecnos Rollers (or AFTCO's if u want) as with all our rods they are double under and TRIPLE overbound bindings in black and gold -
And seeing as you managed to snap your last rod this will be of intrest -- The blank (Graphite USA) has an unconditional lifetime warranty (so if you snap the tip in a car door, ceiling fan or clipping the deckie over the head with it, its COVERED!) and whilst GUSA's are one of the most expensive blanks in the world they are simply awesome.

Oh, another thought, if you got 2x detachable butt rods, you could then take along your reel on one butt, and 2 rods to atach to that, swapping the rods when you swap the spools? That way you could ahve a 15/24 rod AND a dedicated 37kg rod at any time. The butt section could go in your luggage, and the rods, being only around 5ft r so, would be easy to pop into a small rod tube.
Just a thought....
