WEATHER WARNING

An intensifying low pressure system is expected to pass over Auckland on Saturday 26th July through Sunday. Gusts in excess of 50 knots are forecast for the Harbour and Gulf area, heavy rain is also expected. The barometric pressure showing in a number of online weather maps is predicted to be as low as 976 hPa. See the attached map and excerpt from the Met Service.

We strongly suggest you check the state of all the mooring lines.  Are they strong enough to take the increased loadings that will occur during this storm? Double up if necessary and reduce the possibility of damage.

“Forecasters are warning that a storm set to hit the North island over the weekend will be severe.  he Met Service is calling it "no ordinary storm" and the Radio Network's weather analyst Philip Duncan described it as "extremely rare and nasty".

A rapidly intensifying storm is heading for northern New Zealand, striking first in Northland and Auckland before reaching Bay of Plenty and Gisborne on Sunday, Met Service said.  "This is no ordinary storm. It's one of the largest and deepest lows we've seen for some years," Met Service spokesman Peter Kreft said.  "By the time this system reaches northern New Zealand on Saturday, it is likely to have significant destructive potential."

Mr Duncan said: "It is going to deepen rapidly and has the potential of bringing damaging winds, flooding rains, big seas and strong rip tides. It may well be the most intense sub-tropical storm of the decade".

He said the air pressure with this system could drop to 967hPa for a time on Saturday which he says is extremely rare for areas near Auckland.   "This could help create one of the biggest storm surges seen in the upper North Island for several years," he said.  "If this prediction eventuates we could see storm surges flooding low lying eastern coastal areas from Northland to Auckland and across Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. It may also pose a serious risk for low lying areas around the Firth of Thames which is particularly vulnerable to northern storm surges".

Looks like a calm Wellington dayTongue

I flew to Auckland yesterday morning and while boarding (stationary on the ground) the plane was swaying so much you had to hold onto the seat backs to make your way to your allocated seat!

Tried to fly back to Wellies yesterday afternoon, no luck. 120Kph winds, low cloud etc. Had to buy a new toothbrush for my unplanned night in AK.

Looks like the top half of the North Island is going to get it bad this time. Make sure you lock up your daughters (no, that's a different thing isn't it).

I understand that seriously ugly weather has hit Onehunga. There is a deep depression centred over Paihia Rd, and the frostiness in the air has to be experienced to be believed. The lower floors of the property have been frozen solid and some residents have taken to locking themselves in the (only slightly) warmer upper floors.

The cold front coincided with the arrival of several boxes of soft plastics. The storm is expected to last several weeks, or at least one decent jewellery shopping trip.

Based on the current forecast don't get your hopes up, they are predicting 40 to 50 knots from the west next Wednesday

Watching the high cloud slide over now. with the lower levels starting to form up.

For Keri, I'm predicting main thrashing Saturday morning, then a bit of a lull  late arvo as the "eye"passes then the backlash peaking around midnight Sat.

All over bar the celebratory beers mid arvo Sunday (well for us anyway)

She's moving fast boys Thumbs%20Up

Off to nail the chooks down and put some more beers in the fridge (got to have supplies in case we get cut off!)
