hey people i am trying to suss out building an electric kontiki on a tight budget, ive heard of people using 12 volt battery drill motors and was wondering if anyone kows how the motor is sealed from the water and ive also heard of people using bilge pump motors and was wonderin if they put a bigger prop in the bilge pump shaft or if the exsisting prop has enough nuggas to get the line out?im not to keen on spending  200 odd bucks on one of the proper motors so any good ole kiwi ingenuity would be awsome!!

Don’t really think a bilge pump motor would have an enough torque. But I would suggest finding a large windscreen wiper motor off a truck etc. These are normally reasonably waterproof, rated for continuous use and have heaps of torque. Or the motors off electric wheel chairs are perfect, but not that easy to find.

Hi, I am new here - just registered.

I would appreciate any info on building a full kit - what would the whole thing cost?  I am surprised to see the $2500 to $3000 tag on Trade me & the fishing shops.

Is it possible to build up a full kit with winch for less than $1000?

I would appreciate any help.

Hey Nakihunter, Welcome to the forums, if you are of technical mind then you should be able to build one for less than 1k.  If not you could spend a lot of money on it and still only end up with a bunch of parts.  Dan

Hi Dan

Thanks for the welcome & the advise on building a Kontiki fishing system.  Would you have any idea how I should go about this task?

I know I can get the motor for about $300.  I suppose I can get cheaper motors if I used truck wiper motor or wheelchair motor.  The body & stuff can be made from plumbing material & some epoxy I suppose.  The batteries can be bought.  I suppose the other stuff are all add ons.  The single most expensive gear will be the reel with line as that is the real cost.  I could add another motor to it & make it a winch.

I just wanted some advise from someone who knows about this & has been there & done it.  Any where I can get some drawings & instructions & pictures?

Thanks
AMR

To make a decent solid reel is not that hard. Take an old lpg cylinder or similar cut off end domes, reverse and weld a piece of pipe the right diameter in the middle, ie use the domes to create nice curved ends for your reel. Place shaft through the middle of the reel, add a bearing each end. Make up a frame to carry and bingo! I think its better to direct drive rather than use belts or chain as less to catch fingers in.

Safety note-- make sure to remove the valve from end of any cylinder and wash out well! before taking a cutoff blade to it. Should be a no brainer but you never know.Smile

Hi There I,m new to this site as well and had thought of building a kontiki but have never got around to it, but any way had you thought about using a dive scooter to tow out the line, they are around a 100 bucks on tm and are a sealed unit all you would need is a timer. Or what about a weed wacker motor just pick up a cheapie from bunnings and a few bits of pvc to make it bouyant ?????

The dive scooter would be easy as it is a sealed unit.it would probably need an out rigger mounted to it to stop it spinning and a timer and possibly a rudder to help steer it against the rip, but as for the weed wacker it would need to be mounted into a pvc pipe and sealed but then it needs to suck air into the engine so maybe it would need to have a snorkel. The shaft will need to be shortened and a prop put on to it, it would have heaps of grunt it wouldn't need a timer cause you would fill the gas tank up with just enough fuel to take the line out. Just a few ideas let me know how you get on or any other ideas that are out there
