We done it land based. Its freaking awsome, get pist up first though. The old pacaso 1m did the trick just pull over my Huntly or of the like and just stay still and they swim right under your feet haha.

For better vis try the upper reaches of the Waikato.  Pretty much need a long period of no rain then jump in and slaughter as many as you possibly can.

rusky, where would you suggest to go, do you need a boat and what sort of viz could you expect

Ive tried around huntly, but vis is a crapy 1m at best, and you basically just dry shoot them from the surface.
 
A group of us ventured down not long ago to have a look at the river in the centre of Hamilton.  Quite a few koi around but vis was about 2-3m from what I remember and none of us were that keen as the size of them were around 2-3kg.  No secret spots, just the further you go south the cleaner the water gets. 
 
You dont need a boat, but a kayak would be a very good idea!

Sort yourself out with a cheap bow and arrer set-up! There's an annual bow hunt with guys using reels - they fairly slaughter em Thumbs%20Up

under the tuakau bridge towards port waikato vis not the best but heaps of koi and mullet
