This one is real easy to tie. I ripped someone else's pattern. Ken Culgin's. Wink

Hook: 2/0 to suit
Tail: snippets cut from marlin lure skirt. I used silver
Body: Ezi body tube small cut to length
Eyes: prismatic or 3d eyes, whatever floats your boat.

Tie the lure skirt snippet into tubing. glue with superglue. Insert hook into tube and tie off head. Add eyes and epoxy the head area. I put some lead solder into one also, to get a sinking version. And added colour around head & back.

"But is it a fly?" I hear the purists cry... well it has a hook and thread so yeah it is. LOL

Nick; the more I see of what you are tying the more I want to tie S/W flies.

Am still persevering trying to build up some materials. So if you know of any suitable materials that scream "CHEAP! CHEAP!" please point me in that direction.  Three great flies.  Jack.

Works of art such as this amaze me.

I can't wait to give fly tying a go!

Jax, like Clark I mooch around spotlight and a few haberdasheries and the like. One of the best purchases i made was to buy bulk 'clown hair' from a site that Ted c put me onto: http://www.doctoredlocks.com/store/kk_jumbo.html - http://www.doctoredlocks.com/store/kk_jumbo.html
This stuff is way cheaper to use than individual hanks of slinky fibre, sure the properties aren't quite the same but I really doubt that the fish care. Some of the guys on the forums combine orders to overseas sites to bring shipping down also, which can help the cashflow. I compare prices before I order, for example I buy some sizes of hooks from swf.com but find that larger sizes of the same hook can be less expensive to bring in from places like flyworld.com. (I don't stint on hook quality ever). I keep my eyes open for bits and pieces that can be used as more generic copies of materials but in some instances such as with prismatic eyes it's far easier to buy them from a fishing store or online. Some materials like siliskin are just horribly expensive no matter where you look, so i try hard not to screw up when using stuff like that. I also have made good friends with guys in tackle stores and while rummaging through their stuff ask if they are biffing anything out. I scored a heap of estaz (sp?) that way, and every little bit helps.

I found the hardest thing actually was to figure out a list of basic materials that would get me started - as a consequence I have stuff in my kit that i bought but never used.

By the way... i had a heart breaking moment on the weekend, i hadn't used my trout fly kit for a while and while looking for a hare's mask i found that my bulk feathers had been attacked by a sort of weevil thing. My capes, masks and deer pelts were written off. Including a 50% used full jungle cock cape that my dad got me years ago.... ouchCryOuchDead

That's the problem I have at the moment.  I can't just zip to a local tackle store to actually see the material, and I don't want to buy one bit from an online store and another bit from a 2nd one etc...   Have raided our local arts and crafts shop and scored a couple of useful bits but they are limited.  My freshwater tying box is quickly running out of "flash"!

Is there anywhere I can get a saltwater fly material starter kit?  Something that covers the most common flies. For the convenience of such I kit I wouldn't mind spending more then the worth of the materials.

That's a lethal looking fly Nick, I'll have a go at tying some of those.  Looks good enough to eat!

There's more to fishing than catching fish - but catching fish is a big part of it.
