Made the stupid call last night to not go out, before checking the bite time and weather forcast. :(!!!!
woke up to a mint morning and to then read that it was a perfect 7-9:30am bite time .. would have been perfect out there.
Hope some of you got out and did the business.

Much better than I did whizzzz, good job
I made the call to shoot out Sunday Morning, went to narrowneck reef and waded out to my spot x around 8am, the water temp was pretty f'n cold. Berleyed out some old bits and pieces, flicked out half pillies and also took my SP set and threw out a lime tiger. Fishing was very tough only small bites that weren't worth striking at. A bit disappointing, have usually had good success there in winter, that extreme cold patch of weather has made the snaps slow on the bite?? Packed in round 10am. Just glad it didn't hail on me as forecasted, and the wind was non existent first thing.
School of Dolphins cruised right in close by narrowneck beach round midday, happened to be driving past later on, great sight to see, they didn't appear to be feeding on anything thou.
Good to be out there.

I fished around Mahurangi West and around the other side of the bay across from the reserve on both Sat and Sunday and all I got to my name was lots of under sized snaps. Nothing big at all, did see a ray and tried to hook it for abit of fun but even he passed up the opportunity for food.Apart from the occasional heavy falls of rain it was good fishing weather over the weekend. I have to see it was a little unsettling being out Sat night and the sky was clear and lightening was lighting it up. Must have been a lightening storm within a couple of K's from the reserve.

Fished around the Tamaki Estuary Saturday afternoon, caught three KY and got a sore head from the hail. Conditions looked perfect late afternoon for a few snapper but nothing going.
May try an evening fish later this week as I have had much more success recently in the evening.

Hit the rocks here at Waiheke at dawn. Wind, bloody cold and to top it off rain squalls kept rolling over. Apart from a few undersized snaps the area seemed to made up of 30cm ky. Millions of the buggers but nothing big enough to eat them.
Weather got the better off me so left at 10am empty handed only to find the wind dropping and the sun deciding to appear..... Still it was good to be out and better then moping around the house.

Well i was contemplating waiheke on sunday but didnt want to pay for a ferry ticket if the weather was going to be average. Maybe another weekend. I done a bit of exploration round cornwallis in the rain and saw a spot but the tide was too far in unfortunately

Never took to the theory of wind effecting fish unless the direction is producing food from wave action against a shore or reef etc.
In some areas it could be the influx of fresh water from all the rain. The sudden change in salinity might put them off the bite?? Doesn't explain fish in an estuary though where the salinity changes with every tide...
Personally I think we are just in the transition from summer to winter temperatures. I think water temperatures were around 18 deg b4 this bad weather and now its down to 15-16C?. Can't find any stat's to back this up but the water sure feels colder.
Fish are more lethargic from the drop in temps and the small fish haven't buggered of yet (small fish are always hungry!). Interesting to see how the fishing is in a couple of weeks from now.

There was a hint of southerly wind direction first thing sunday and I find the Southerly or SE winds are a real fish killer. I agree with islandp the little buugers are always hungry and the biggies are sleep swimming

Met up with One Leg for a fish at one of his spots on Saturday.
Grovo got our only keeper on a soft bait. Caught a few ky and used as fresh bait.
Got one MEAN run on a whole pillie on the BTR but as I was charging across the rocks to get the rod and strike I bailed pretty hard and by the time I got there bait had been dropped. Bugger it, think it was a decent snap. Grovo got a good run like that too but didnt hook up.

With the weather forecasts for this weekend end Baz I would be looking
at going on the opposite side of the Island. Matiatia and the coast
line adjoining is going to get hammered if the wind blows as they have
predicted.

Well managed to get out Saturday mid morn for a fish as a Sunday fish wasn't allowed , went to Martins bay and walked to the right and walked and walked , was a lovely morning for it, calm as and water like glass ,got too a couple of my old haunts , and fished over the droping tide , the fishing was that good i managed to unpack my pack clean and sort everything and repack it all with out missing a beat.couldn't even get rid of the cubed up pillie's i had throwen in at my feet . called it quites at 1pm and walked back have planed to take the boat next time and move on too some of the bigger bricks off shore, how ever i did get too watch a large ray for 15min's swiming around . so not al a bad day..

I shot out with Fisher on Sat as well. Not to much action saw a couple of spots that looked promising. "Note to self" really need to invest in a rain coat. Luckily it mostly hailed so didn't get wet through the bone. Not to much happening on the fishing but was good to get for a fish and catch up with Mark again.
I know he went back out on Sunday so wanting to see how he got on.

looks like it was a quiet weekend all 'round then.
I went back out to the kauri mountain ledge i was at last sunday. Not much happening, just under sized snapps, and in the berly, the usual hoard of blue mao mao/sweep/leatherjackets with the odd passing small trevally/pigfish/small snapper. Couldn't even find a decent livebait, mate got a kahawai, but the hook went out threw the throat so it was 1/2 bled when it came in, and the larger blue mao mao we used on one rod just wanted to stay in close with it's friends. Had some fun with the mao mao trying to pull out a couple of the bigger ones for the smoker amongst all the little ones, and somehow got a leather jacket on a 5/0 hook which also came home. Had a massive stingray come along, when i 1st saw the 2 white patches as it flapped around deep down i thought i was looking at 2 stingrays doing some synchronised swimming for my entertainment, was about 1.7m across the wings. Seeing as the taxman is giving me some money back soon i went and splurged on friday with a tld-25 that was going cheep and a rod to suit 24kg line. I tried to tept the stingray with a 1/2 bonito head, just to test the drag on my shiney new reel and it picked it up briefly, but spat it back out. Must be a reason it got to be that size eh haha

I went out today from about 3pm till 6pm, just North of where we were Rockfish, Castor bay, on that point we saw. In all the time I got Sweet FA. Not even a nibble. I used some berely that Rockfish left me and only had a few small baitfish swimming around. The place was like a millpond. I still think the spot looks promising, if and when the fish come back on the bite. You'd think that after a few years of fishing, you'd begin to see a pattern regarding when the fish are on the bite. But it seems bloody random to me.

Nothing doing Sunday at the same ledge at Busbys that we were at 2 weeks ago.
Had trouble just staying standing in the howling wind.
Plenty of ky in the berley but no sign of kings and no snaps at all on our baits.
Better than being inside sitting around hungover tho, walked off the hangover on the way over the hill

Well the upside is now your spare is now fixed so if it happens again and your out fishing at least you have a spare and you also have the jack situation sorted as well. Flip side is better for you to find out before you leave to go fishing than end up in some remote area and then end up with a flat tire.

Yeah can relate. I'm on holidays at the mo and have had the chance to
explore some new spots I've been contemplating for a while now. Found
the most awesome spot the other day - cost me a box of beer to the
farmer - 2hrs hike one way, waist deep crossing a bay in spanner water,
that is; tightened the nuts, knee deep in a boggy muddy swamp,
chased by some massive angry bulls, few zaps from a mains powered
electric fence, descending a 70m vertical cliff face - thank good for
pohutakawa, jumped over a big rock to almost land on a huge bull
sealion sunbathing - we both shat our dacks, fished an epic series of
ledges for 6hrs straight, burlied up to the maximum,---------- not one
bite all day. Ocean was just dead - no life whatsoever. Not even
kahawai in the burley. Then, repeated the mission in reverse
order. Legs are still seized up from the ordeal. Will I return? Hell
yeah! such an epic spot that has every thing going for it. Thats
fishing - have love, will travel.

The flavour of the posts yesterday was that it was just a hard days fishing. Every bad fish is one closer to a good fish.
Should have trusted the Maori calendar - said it was poo. Funnily enough, the fish came on when it said too - about 4.30pm - but also it just could have been dusk.

so reports from the weekend?
We didnt landbase but too the boat for a run from hadfields and fished some of our usual landbased territory from the other side. Burley'd up a storm but still pretty hard going until the late arvo bite kicked in and even then it was only small stuff. Small baits ie half pillies and bonito strips seemed to be the way to go.

Had a couple of days off last week and got up to the Kari Kari peninsula. Only managaed one day's fishing (friday) since I was up there with the girlfriend...
A strong Northeasterly ruled out Matai bay, looked like some nice spots up there though!Did a bit of scoping on the Thursday and found a reasonably sheltered spot on the Doubtless Bay side...
Didn't get off to the best start on Friday. Stayed in bed too long so missed the change of light. Once I got to the spot I got the berley going, live bait rig set up, baited up my spinning set and was ready to go...when I discovered the handle was missing from my Penn 850ssm!!! Retraced my steps back to the car (luckily not too long to walk) and couldn't find it..so grabbed my spare reel and back out to the rocks.
Finally got a line in the water and caught a perfect live bait sized kahawai and got him out under a balloon. Proceeded to catch more small kahawai, put one in the rock pool for livebaiting for later...and threw the rest back...
By about half past one I'd only caught a couple of just legal snapper, which went back in the water. Not a trace of a Kingfish and I would have packed it in if I wasn't trapped by the tide...
I had read a book recently that said a whole skipjack tuna head is a good bait for big snapper...so I thought what the hell...let my livebait go, took the balloon off and threaded my hook into the skipjack head. I was thinking I should have changed from the livebait hook but couldn't be bothered...and my expectations were pretty low considering how slow the fishing had been.
I can't cast with the tld25 so I stripped some line out and thew the bait out by hand (pretty gumby I know!)
Went back to fishing down the end of the rocks with the spin set up....Was just reeling in a tiny snapper when line started screaming from my other reel.... Dumped the little snapper into a rock pool still on the hook and scrambled up to my other rod.
The line had stopped by the time I got there, and cursing my luck I pushed the lever up to strike and started winding in...just as I was giving up hope a big thumping weight came on the line and the rod bent over...
It wasn't exactly a fair fight on 24kg tackle...but I wasn't complaining when a the 83cm moocher came to the surface. Had quite a job landing the bugger by myself without a gaff but got him on to the rocks... a personal best by a long long way.
Had to wait for another couple of hours for the tide to go out until I could get off the rock…
The girlfriend came to meet me to help carry the gear..and on her way found the reel handle!!! A very happy ending to the day…

JK it's Known for it's mud marlin and big one's at that and over summer Bronzie's . i through the squid head back out got a nice take but no hook up ,Bungel no some nice run's on good fish but we were all unable to land , kelp got in the way probably how they got big, the shore there is deciveing lots of heavy kelp off shore.

Nice report and looks like the squidy wasn't going to give up his dinner without a fight!
Baz is a wealth of knowledge and great to get out with, but be warned he will try to convert you over to the Alvey .

Nice work, Baz n co, fished there early in the year while waiting to fish the rocks up by the navigation pole, got a couple of snapper and a trevally but nothing huge. Looks like a nice trip. May have to go and hit up that way somewhere sunday morning, dying to get out for a fish!

Well got out for a fish yesterday arvo, went to one of the spots i like to fish in the rain and wind, and bumped in to another fisho doing the same , between the two of us we had a ball so much for a poor fishing day ! pillies were getting ripped off but hook up's till we changed over to mullet most fish landed where KY with the odd sm Snap throwen in ,apart from keeping two KY for bait later we returned the rest . As the tide turned and rose up the fishing got better , not in size but numbers about 20 fish each returned .The last fish of the day was a buet Ray that was close to 1.1/2 mtr's across that my mate Chris played for 20min's before busting off , the rain stayed away for the two hour's we fished ,and didn't come till we were back at the car's. was a lot of fun ,i took two rod's but never even got the chance to set the other up. so guy's dont let a little weather put you off , the fish are back, and around the bay's

nice one Baz. Bit of wind and rain is no problem, just helps to wash gear down on the walk back.!
Anyone up for an early saturday morning mission, big baits deployed at a likely spot.?

sounds good... thinking a few stinky berly bombs and some juicy bonito steaks with 8/0's in them would do the trick. Just thinking about where to head, any ideas Kenshin? Heading north seems to be the go, just not sure how far to go..
