Planned trip to Oakura Bay for Xmas has been scrapped!! Lady who owns our house wants to sell it so need to move quickly. Will spend a couple of days camping at Martins Bay near Warkworth. Anyone know of any good spots around there off the rocks? Cheers Gerry |

leader, I would say the only spot that wont be shoulder to shoulder at that time will be Takatu Point. Good fishing and a long walk but worth the effort Martins and the rest of the area will be very crowded. ------------- I would rather laugh with the Sinners, than cry with the Saints |

Mullet Point north of Martins Bay is supposed to be good Leader. Groundbaiting and floating baits on an incoming evening tide. Good luck! ------------- Keep knockin', nobody's home. |

Your right KFS is is a well knowen spot. But I would expect it to be shoulder to shoulder at Christmas. Its busy at the best of times and not fishing that well from what I hear ------------- I would rather laugh with the Sinners, than cry with the Saints |

Thanks Mate Been around Martins Bay a few times but always in a boat not off the rocks. No boat these days. Im from the UK so still learning about fishing over here, rigs, baits etc etc.

Leader I have a caravan at Martins Bay so will be up there at Christmas for a few weeks. Mullet Pt is quite popular and normally kahawai around & lots of small snapper. Have seen a few legal snapper in the last month or so. The other place where I have caught off the rocks is at Scotts Landing - walk round to the little island to the left. Caught a 38cm & 48cm snapper a few months ago. We fish off our kayaks normally and can normally get a feed straight out off the boat ramp at change of light. Fishing definately not in the same class as the Mokes - bit far to paddle though. Paul |

I think you will find that most of the snapper are out on the mud in deeper water. Might be a bit hard for you landbased guys at the moment.

Hey Leader, I have family who also have a caravan spot at Martins bay "The Whitehouse" Dan my step brother will be there from the 24th on they have a five++ metre boat so if your sick of bein stuck on land hook up wit him im sure they'll take you sea side... Otherwise I have seen some 6lb plus Snaps landed on a regular basis from locals who go not more than 100 meters from the beach because I was given direct to the spot P.M me and Ill hand them ova not wanting to step on the locals toes... Take note if your heading to scots lanmding there is a big wool shed on the left bout half way thru the journey.. On t6he opposite side of the road is a huge paddock driveway and house park by the shed... walk and ask permission to enter the property this is a must. Walk down the steep hill to a canoe shed. go over the horse mussels on foot and cast big strips of bonito with a good burley trail... Have seen Kings there on every visit and have caught snapper each time over four pound and one of eight pound careful on your line getting fraid on the horse mussels.. but you can pretty much walk out ten plus feet and cast into a calm deep hole full of fish... oh and you didn,t here it from me... Plus Dan will be up for a fish and a film he never says no to both... best of lucky and a very merry bent rod Christmas. ------------- it's a fact woggle-bogglebee exists. |

Hey guys, I reckon that even Takatu will get hit pretty hard around that time. Its a place I've had mixed luck with myself. Best results have been on the latter end of the outgoing tide, but have never tried there at dusk, always done dawnys as easiest to get out there and be sure of getting a spot. have not had a chance to head up there lately tho but would be keen. Another option would be to catch the ferry over to Kawau and walk to a spot from there. Some good places not too far from South Cove. Also hear that the southern end of Omaha has been getting pretty popular, unsure hows its fishing tho. Have fished Mullet Point a few times with no luck |

hey no worries, best of luck LBG, thats usually about the time I head up there. The gate still open at 6am? Ive been up there on occasions b4 that time and its been opened. I've actually caught my best kingi there 3 years ago right about this time! Let us know how ya go

What a day! We got there a tad late but after negotiating the descent (a tad hairy to say the least!) we got an hour fishing in. With the burley out only ten minutes we had swarming Kahawai and Blue Mao Mao...made it quite a struggle to get a bait down to the kelp intact. But once we got them down, it was on. Results were a couple of monster snapper (none by me, sob sob) both in the 5-10 kg range. Thank god neither of them were mine to be honest because getting them back up the hill and hiking them back did'nt look like any fun at all. I played with a few Kahawai but not much else apart from the odd strike or two but to be all and all for one hours fishing it was amazing. The guy who caught both the snapper only put 5 baits in the water the whole time! Tinny bastard! Will be going back there one day soon for sure, will pack a little lighter too, my back is killing me. |

haha good stuff LBG, sounds alike it was a worth while trip there. That cliff can be a bit tricky at times, altho there are a few easier ways down. I gotta get up there again real soon! |

Are you talking about Takatu Point? I fished there twice about ten years ago. It's a spectacular walk (about an hour if I remember correctly). The first time we went it was fine - we came down into the last bay (actually in the marine reserve) and walked around to the end of the point from there. The second time the cliff face had eroded signficantly and we had a hell time getting down. Never went back. I think other options would be to rubber duck or yak around to the end of the point. The options would be to launch at the beach facing Kawau where you go into the park (a long paddle) or from the ocean beach (with the big waves). Most people I see there have yaks pulled up onto the rocks or rubber ducks anchored out (I do a lot of boating out there). A good place to LB might be from the rocks past Pink beach at the southern end of Omaha. We always catch plenty of snapper close in to the rocks from a boat - certainly within casting distance of the land. An easy walk from the southern end of Omaha too. We're also catching plenty on the sand at the southern end of Pakiri. Both would be more easily accessible than Takatu Point IMHO

| Yeah Kayaks were the way to go we were thinking, on our way out we saw a guy pulling a fairly hefty Kingie he'd speared out in the bay in his Kayak. Bugger having the drag that back up the hill! |

If you go for Kayaks, then there are heaps of great LB possies accessible from Martins Bay - straight across the water to the islands. Excellent fishing around there and not too far - or there's along the coastline towards Mahurangi. ------------- Nobody has ever come up with a great idea after a second bottle of water. |

As for ways of getting down to Takatu, I hope you didnt go str8 down off the lookout? thats bloody scary. I got about 1/2 way once. You can either go left when u reach the lookout and go down thru the gut in the hill, its not overly steep and theres a bit of a path / goat track you can follow down. it brings you out on the stoney beach to the right of the marine reserve markings and it gives you acess to the points either side of the bay. On the left is where I got my 18kg king, and yes it was a tuff walk back to the car. The other way is to follow the track round to the right from the lookout and its a fair bit easier from what I remember. However this spot seems more popular from my experience and is often taken. Since dont wanna crowd others I usually head back to the left. Im sure there are a few other ways down. Only thing putting me off fishing up there is I dont like leaving my car in the carpark for such a long time. Afraid of going back to it and finding its gone. |

Ha...yeah the path from the lookout, no way. Orignally thought it was the way down but after having a quick look soon decided that it would've been a suicide call. We went down the left side...the right side sounds like the go next time. Either way I'm keen to get back out there again real soon. |
