Im off to the Solomons in Sept for 2 weeks ,Ive already picked Stu's brains but thought there may be others with different views We are taking some softbait rods and a couple of baitrunner setups for poppering ,Ive made up a rod tube out of 100mm novadrain with screw caps on each end and will fashion a carry strap for it soon .It is 2.2mtrs long to take the longest of the rods My question is this .Do you have to notify the airlines in advance of such an item (used to be a rule in the past if over 1mtr long I think),how awkward is a tube like this when traveling ,is it included in your wieght allowance,any fees for this and lastly .Is it not worth the trouble to take your own setups While Im picking your collective brains ,on the way home we have a 10hr stopover in Honiara and a 10 hr overnight stopover in Brisbane How safe is Honiara for a couple to walk round in ,Is there anything that we should see or purchase there Does anyone know any tackle shops etc that would be 1.open 2.worth looking at during our stopover in Brissy(would have to be relatively close to the airport) Been to Brissy a couple of times but that was years ago and the memory like my mind and body is on the down hill slide appreciate any advice Thanx Steve ------------- I step out my door to paradise on earth |

Bought a couple of SP rods back from Oz last year in a tube. Just checked them on as normal, no extra charge (emirates) One thing to watch for though is that they cant move up and down inside the tube or you'll end up with rods minus the tips. Very important with the likes of SP rods being so fragile. Cant help with anything else sorry ------------- Skirt Pulla |

Right, ahem... Rod tubes, no worries. If folks can fly with surfboards etc, then a rod tube ain't no problem. It does have to go thru the "Fragile" counter though, after you check in. Yes, it does indeed count in your baggage allowance, however, travelling with Air NZ, you get an extra 10kgs baggage allowance as you will be carrying sporting gear... fishing rods, reels, tackle etc = sporting gear, don't let them say otehrwise (some lady check-in clerks have PC issues with evil fishermen I have noticed...stick to your gun, get the 30kg baggage allowance, it helps heaps). Definitely pack the rods carefully in the rod tube... wrap bubble wrap all around them so when you shake your rod tube, you hear no rattles or anything. PhantomDeviant is correct about ensuring they do not slide in the tube either. Honiara. Basically it is a 3rd world hole. Ain't much to see or do there apart from relax in the hotel. Certainly you should be fine walking around there during the day, but remember that there a lot of very poor people there with little to do, and as a rich white man, you'll be a potential target for unsavoury types. Having said that, I have never met any of these, the Solomon Islanders I have met are all friendly and helpful, especially to kiwis . But do not go walking the town at night (not that you will want to either. Like I said, the place is a dump) Exercise a degree of caution is the point I am trying to get across. Much te same as walking around Otara shopping centre at night. You proably be fine, but...... Definitely take your own gear. Although I know for a fact Joe at Zipolo has a lot of gear there, all sorts of lures, SPs etc...I supplied most of it! :-) Make sure you put plenty of electrical tape around your screw on caps on the rod tube to ensure they do not come undone on the planes by vibration or curious fingers or anything like that, OK? For a handle, just get about 2ft of webbing belt or seat-belt or somethnig, and elect tape it to your tube in the middle so it balances nicely. leave (obviously) about10inches untaped in the middle to hold on to. Works just fine, no worries. Go to the RD1 nearest you, and get a bottle of Sunblaster liquid sunblock. It comes in a squeegy bottle with a squirter pump on it. It is like $80 for a litre or somethnig, but will last both of you for the whole trip, goes on really REALLY easily, has aloe vera in it so it spreads easily, it is awesome stuff. Way better than tubes of that slimy sticky sunblock crap that everyone seems to feel is necessary. I am a very fair skinned person (I sunburn in the rain), and I am perhaps whiter now than when I went away, so the stuff works brilliantly. I'll see ya probably at the beach soon anyhow, and Joe Entrikin and 2 of his daughters will likely be with me as well, so you can meet them all, discuss anything else you can think of with them. Oh, perhaps consider taking just one suitcase for clothes for you and the better half, but take up a 40l chilly bin or a 60l bulk bin ($20 from the warehouse with clip on lid) to carry stuff like reels, fluids (sunblock) etc... shock proof, impact resistant, squash proof, certainly a better way to transport delicate spinning reels i have found. You can then leave it up there(the bin) when you come home, as by then when you get home if your reels are squished in the bale arm dept, at least you will be able to get them fixed here in NZ. No such chance in the Sollies mate. OK then, any other questions, I think I have covered most of the points. cheers mate, see ya in a week or so at the beach, Stu. |

Thanx for that Stu ,I have heard probably on here that a length of gutterguard shoved down the tube will stop the rods from moving and therefore getting damaged .Will catch up when youre at the beach if you make it ,the way its raining and blowing here at the moment we could be cut off for weeks ,have a few other ques regarding cash ,currenccies and the like .Might get you and Joe and Tim around for dinner one night ,The missus makes a fair triffle or cheesecake not that that would interest you in the least. Yeah
As others have said no problem with rods or tubes however I guess a max
length must exist. As mentioned you will have to deposit them in a separate
area to your luggage on departure & on arrival may come around on the
track along with your luggage or have to be collected elsewhere, would
pay to ask.
One very important point tho, may sound silly but make sure you remember
to collect them as strangely enough if other complications arise they can be
overlooked & if taking several rods best to tape them all together into one
bundle.
A very common place rods/tubes, tend to be left behind, is in hotels/motels
rooms & suchlike, have done so myself several times. One reason for this is
that for convenience, we tend to stand them in a corner of a room. On
departure after packing we are inclined to horizontally scan the room/rooms
& is amazing how often we can miss a relatively slender item standing
vertically in a corner. Even moreso if we have elected to store them under
a bed, or in / on top of wardrobes & suchlike.
Best thing is to have a written checklist of the important items, to quickly
refer to when finally packed to leave.

go to youre local upolster and get sum low density foam,ive used this in the past its excellent,abit on each end and a bit arround the rods in the middle works a treat

One thing to be aware of in Honiara if you have a rental car or will
be driving.
You may notice that near the centre of town the parking appears
to follow a regular pattern i.e. two or three vehicles parked one
behind the other, then a couple of spaces & that pattern repeated.
Newcomers usually park in the vacant spaces without realising that
they are vacant because a coconut tree is overhead & if it is the time
of year that coconuts are falling, you can return to find your car roof
redesigned.
This was the case years ago anyway, maybe the trees have been
removed by now, but would pay to check anyway.

Whiti Fisho, Been all over the show with Rod Holder just like yours, never had an issue with it. Just make sure you collect it from oversize/fragile bag counter as they do not put them out with general baggage. I just tape all my rods together and jam foam at each end of the tube to stop them sliding |

i was just talking to the air new zealand lady two days ago about my rods on the flight, she told me that the present 10kg allowance for sporting equipment is changing to new rules that allow only one piece of luggage up to 30kg(i think it was 30) and each individual piece of luggage after that will cost $20 that means rod tubes etc it means you get an additional 20 something kgs for each additional piece of luggage you pay for not sure when this new rule comes into effect but it might pay to check if it comes in before you flight have a good one riga |

Glue one end on the tube with pvc cement(like what plumbers use) and at the other screw top end find a bolt long enough to go through and drill a hole in it so you can paddlock it on. Drill a hole through the top of the tube at a right angle slide the bolt through and padlock . Don't have to worry about light fingers or vibrations. Heading over to Cape Yoke top of Aussie next week myself, I invested in one of the large adjustable Bazuka rod carry tubes. Have heard good and bad things about them regarding Airlines treating them rough and smashing things. Still it holds about 8 rods depending on what type was told to put each rod in a soft rod sleeve then a strip of bubble wrap around each rod in three places up the length so they don't vibrate and and bang together, if you want the guides in one piece. Also break down all 2pc rods and rubber band them together after putting them in a rod sleeve. ------------- www.synit.co.nz |
