Topic: Gulp Baits vs Exude

Subject: Gulp Baits vs Exude
Date Posted: 03 Jun 2008 at 8:42pm
After having used almost exclusively Berkley Gulp Baits for all my soft baiting, I decided to buy a packet of Exude soft baits and see whether I would get the same results.

We do most of our soft baitng off Papamoa Beach where pink shine jerk shads are dynamite, so I bougt a packet of the pink exudes and gave them ago, my mate was using some of the new bright pink minnow gulp baits and got five fish in quick time while all I got was a couple of bumps not even solid bites, changed over to my normal gulp bait pink shine and it got nailed before it even got to the bottom and I got fish after fish on them then I went back to the exude and got nothing. Both of these baits are the same size and very similar in colour and appear to have the same action when jerked beside the boat so the only thing I can put it down to is the scent on the gulp baits.

Have any of you guys found the same thing before.

Thats interesting.

A guy at the boat show told me "If you want to learn how to soft bait properly use any brand. But if you simply want to catch fish use Gulp!"  (BTW he wasn't a Berkley sponsored pro)

I thought that given the exposure and wide spread use of soft bait now, we would hear more and more stories saying that basically the big brands are all as good as each other.  Obviously thats not your experiance!

Fred Onion - powerbaits are even worse than exudes! Get some bios or squidgies as a point of difference to the gulp.
Marligator -In my 18 months experience - absolutely no comparison - gulps are on another planet v exudes in overall performance.
Exudes more durable for sure - because they don't get eaten as much.

One of the Exude patterns is similar to one of the Bass Assassins. Have caught plenty on the Bass Assassin, yet a big fat ZILCH on the Exudes... To be honest, I don't recall catching anything on the Exudes.

I have caught Gurnards, Blue Cod and Barrocuta on excudes. I use mine when the coutas are about because they are hard on baits and excudes are quite cheap.  Never got a Snapper on one. Most of the excudes I have tried are quite stiff with poor 'action'. The long 'worm baits' from excudes have more action but only ever caught gurnard on them.

I have found Powerbaits to be as good as most other baits, they are nice and soft.

To be fair yes I have caught a couple of good snapper on them in the rangi channel when fishing was good - but then could have used anything within reason and got a similar result.

Alot of people cant catch fish on plastics because they dont know how to work a lure its about the action with the plastics where as most of the berkleys i feel are more of a bait. If people fish soft plastics as they would a gulp dont expect the same results. I use both and have no probs catching fish on my tikis gamblers and so on while the old man uses gulp. I use gulp aswell and have nothing against them they are as durable as some plastics and always seem to work when theres fish on the bite or in the area. At the same time i get more satisfaction using the plastics because they look better and you have to fish them not just leave them for roddy the rod holder to catch the fish for you.

Thats a big call....ive been thrased by a bloke who fished his rod in the rodholder all day so he could free his hands up to smoke and drink.LOLLOL.. wonder if he was doing it properly,i was jiggling the baits all day and got a few...maybe i wasnt doing it properly, but then again another bloke i know does this huge lift thingy then drops the rod tip to the water....maybe he was doing it properly, but the pros tell us to go wash fishing..is that doing it properly Confused...Damb still got a bit to learn, one thing i have learnt is use the baits that catch fish for you....now thats doin it properly Big%20smile...... AC does alright on the exudes.infact hes the only person ive ever seen catch snapper on the exudesLOL..Hard to tell if your doing it properly and i fail to see how a different brand of s/bs will help you do it properly..if gulps work use them,if non scented work for you use them,if allens snakes work for you ,use em..

Would have to be pretty damn flat for your softbait not to have action even if sitting in the rod holder, considering stretch in braid is a bout zip. Mr Rod Holder has caught fish in my boat on Slug-Gos and other unscented softies on calm days when its been flat as a mill pond.

Drift provides movement. Anyone ever experienced 0 knots drift?

I've caught nadda of any interest on the exude shads but have caught plenty on the crabs. Exudes and food source are at the bottom of my list for sure.

I reckon that guys comment is probably pretty right. I'm certainly no gulp sponsored fisherman, and I use very few gulps at all. You can catch a hell of a lot of fish on them with very little experience so thats gotta be good. I just like to use other more durable ones that rely on more action.

I get what your saying mate and its a valid point, what about in 2 months time when the fish have gone into full winter mode and have lock jaw.Even the gulps need to be worked to get a strike and its a possibility the scent can help keep the fish hanging on a bit longer...what do ya reckon, a bit of action and scent...Seems to be alot of experts around telling people what to do when i find its better to find your own style and make that work for yourself..By expert i meant that bloke at the boat show quoted above

Yeah good point Simon, the point im getting at is the so called experts  telling people what to do when in reality where all different and have our own way of fishing s/bs and we all catch fish

I use whatever catches fish really - alot of the time I don't have all day to spend mucking around.
My tacklebox is overflowing with sp's I hardly ever use- so often all I have used after a 2-3 hour session are squidgies, the odd gulp and maybe try 2-3 others. The bio baits are new and definitely look like they will do very well.

yeah me too......but I'm focusing on workups more at the mo, so should be albe to get rid of them quick time.

I like the wave worm tiki shads -and at a buck a piece, they're a steal. Scored me some great fish at the barrier.

Second the Tiki Shads - That was what I was using with your Redfinger that day we went out - towards the end when we where in the main harbour and cleaning up... Had been using gulps but once the fishing came alive I chucked a tiki on to see if they worked and to prove to myself that they were a lot more durable than the gulps (which they were) plus they smell the best out of any softie i've used!

Marlingator,  I too fish your same waters using the same favorite colour and shape.  I too persevered with the exude brown and orange colours over what was the best fishing
months.  I smelled them wet , they smelled like wet plastic!

My experience was this.  In opinion Gulps seem to catch more fish 5:1 in Papamoa. However in the times I saw people around me fishing with Exudes they generally caught larger fish than I did.  Maybe it was cos I am very lazy when it comes to soft baits but thats what I saw on 5 occasions. I caught limit bag on gulps, mate caught 2 fish both alot larger than all of my fish. Maybe it has something to do with the predatory nature of bigger fish wanting to take a bigger non-scented bait dunno - Ill leave that open to debate.

I now fish only with gulp. Works for me. Why make it harder for yourself to catch fish?

NYGL1 may have a story he wishes to share regarding this matter.

P.S curly tail Pinkies are lethal in paps over summer!
PPS I am not endorsed by Gulp either but am open to try other products in the name of researchTongue

The only reason gulp is the BEST and catches the biggest fish time after time is because its gulp and has 4000x more scent the the nearest competitor. LOL

Phishpula, by curly tail, pinkies I presume you mean the pink grubs which have about a 3 inch body and 5 inch tail. I like them as well in chartuesse and new penny but find that they get ripped off the hooks easily by smaller fish and also regularly get them back with the tail missing. My favourite ones off Papamoa are the pink shine 5 & 7 inch jerkshads, 4 inch swimming mullets in charteusse and pumpkin seed and the aforementioned grubs. the biggest fish caught have been on the pink shine with several around the 7 kg mark.

i have found now the fishing is getting a little harder, the gulp baits are proving to out fish their rivals bigtime. my mate and i have had a competition the last two trips, he used exude and i used gulp.
result was i spanked his butt both times.
he had some fish on the white worm and the pinkys but the gulp lime tiger and nuke chook outfished him 5/1.

Gulps rule......

They came over here showed us how to catch em on plastics and we have been loving since. None of the over brands went through that much trouble to show us Kiwi's how its done. I have tried all brands but I always end the day fishing the Gulp brand.

I have given the Exudes a go for what I would consider a fear shot.
I had a a couple of packs that i had been carrying a round for sometime and never had much luck with them..(funny chicken & baby bass)..
So one day on a trip away myself ,chalieF ,raumatibeach and phishpula met a man that helped bring them (exudes) in to the country. So after him giving them a glowing reference and being told its all in the action and that good softbait fisher men can catch fish on them.
The next day when we hit the water I set off to prove I was a good "softbait fisher man".
To alot of piss taking from people listed above LOL...
So after 4 hours solid flicking a baby bass i hooked a 45cm snapper..(Yes just the one)

So in short if you have a lot of time on your hands and don't feel like your arm is going to fall off after 4hours of madly giving your bait the big action.
These are the bait for you...LOLLOL

Other wise I think you are better off with Gulp, sluggos and squidies.

wave worm tikis, sluggos, gulps, all work i have caught fish on all but for numbers in bite times and summer gulps and cheap plastics work well when they will take anything

Have a full tray of sluggos in 6 different colours in 6" sizes i havent even used yet lol

My tip for the guys who want to use the plastics try colours that match your faviourite berkely lures and go from there - all sorts of different weights lines rods reels lures hooks work its just finding a combonation that becomes your goto rig for filling the bin.

i dont go out there to look at the pretty colours, friendly shags photograph dolphins i go out to kill anything dumb enough to take my lure - afterall killing shlt is where its at LOL

Get a Soldering Iron and make a bum hole in the Exhude or any non-scented lure and put a cigarette filter soaked with fish oil, leftover Gulp Alive or stimulate into it.
Then its a scented lure just like the rest.
