Had planned on having a landbased fish for a while. A zilch off the rocks at Waiheke on the weekend had me eagerd to have another go.
Milford has been good to me in the past with a 10lb snap and a couple of 6ers from the past couple of trips. Totally different seasons, but no harm in trying… and I’m glad I did.
At around 9.30pm, and having been at my spot X for less than an hour, I hooked up. Was certain this was a snap and after a brief but hard fight, a very nice red presented itself on its side in the shallows.
I could have stayed on longer, but it was too fricken cold and I had enough for a good feed or two.
The tape measure had this fish going 62cm, so getting up towards the 10lb mark.
On gutting this fish also had crab parts.
Rig = Baitrunner 6500B, DAM 13ft surfcaster, 10kg Maxima Tournament Silver, 60lb BM supple trace, 6/0 recurve, smelly pilly.
Pic to come.

Nice!
The Bays is a fishery that fishes well if you put in the time to learn the spots.
An old mate 'Pete R' and I use to always do well all through the bays of the bricks..

Would that be Peter Reynolds? That man is a landbased legend!

Yep, Pete and I fished for many many years together as part of ther NSSC.
I owe a lot of my landbase success's to Pete's tuition
Met him nearly 20 odd years ago...As you say a true legend of the LBG snapper game

I met him when I was a member of NSSC a few years ago. His photo albums are extremely impressive. I remember when he nailed that 13kg snap off Rangi and we had to do a fundraiser to get it mounted.

If only Obald had known that - he would have been down there most nights, 13ft rod and a bag of smelly pillies at the ready. He'd never have moved to the Ranch.

Shot Simon !
I thought that fish was 11.4kg ? could be wrong
Hes a ledgend allright. Have fished with him quite a few times but not since I got the boat Biggest cast ever One day we were fishing away had caught one or two fish when Peter turned up ( always a good sign ). My mate had not had a bite, and continued too not have for an hour or so Peter went over too him.....baited him up , cast his pillie out and handed the rod back about 60 seconds later my mate hooked up too a nice snap ...

Think it might have been 11.4kg now you mention it Phats.
JK, I'm from the other side of the bridge. Haven't forgotten my Shore roots though. Always a pleasure come over that side to pinch a fish or two . Definitely a lot more satisfaction pulling a fish like that out from a beach.

Thought about going again tonight before the hordes arrive and fish the place out!
Guessing I've got more chance of getting struck by lightning twice than getting another good red from the same spot two nights in a row.
Anyway, dinners cooking now and it smells good!

Got digi scales somewhere, but buggered if I remember where I hid them. Think I must've been pished at the time.
Been trying to get the pic out of the camera for the past hour... might need to get a new one of them before I splash out on any more fishing stuff.
