2008 sees a change in venue for the annual F.Net mid Winter fishing event formerly known as the Smoke House Bay Challenge.   The change however is slight.  This year the event will be held at The Jetty, Port Fitzroy, Gt. Barrier Island,
on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of August.

So git your teams sorted and leave them here.   Looking for a ride...??....ditto, leave your contacts here.  Team name and members with contact for skipper.   There is absolutely no reason anyone who can get his/her @rse to auckland should miss out for want of a seat as every year there are always skippers looking for crew to help share costs etc..

Entry cost p.p are likely to be minimal.  20 bucks or so unless accommodation is required.

A back up venue will be figured out a bit later in case of shyte weather but put a ring around the dates now cause something will happen then.  You're not getting any younger and you know you will have a ball.  Ask any punter who has been to a previous event.

For those that are super keen (and for old times sake) there will also be a warm up event at Smokehouse Bay on the 3rd,4th and 5th of July.  Maybe a bit early for super bear and no prizes but a bit of a bo-peep and intell gathering expedition for the main event in August, when the big winter bears will be arriving in town. etc.  Still, ya never know at the Barrier.

Is this a strictly F.net even or are non-f.netters welcome in teams?

I'd say non-f.netters welcome as long as there is a representative or two in each team....we can't be awarding 'prestigious' awards to those we can't readily ridicule and extract urine from.....Thumbs%20Up....extra points for hotties!!

Team Tagit will be there again. I also understand that team Silent Running will grace us with their presence.
Bill - might be keen on the July warm up also if I can find a crew. I have a few guys that if they can make it are keen to go wide for a sword , so might spend a night out if the weather allows.

Not that my opinion counts at all, furthermore most of what I think could be classed as pure horse ****e,  however I think the warm up should be in May/June - or at least prior to 25th June.

I would be keen to slop around in the dark dipping fresh squid - especially if it involved some virgin fanny on the crank.

This sounds good. The Jetty is a good venue. How many big boats will be going?
We could talk to Sealink and see if they would do a group deal on taking trailer boats over if the weather looks favourable.
Fitzroy house also does accomadation & the Fitzroy store has a good size flat downstairs that could take a few fish mongers.

Roughy:  I doubt any boats that go will not get there under there own power, but feel free to organise here those that might wish to do as you say.   How many big boats??  Unknown at this point but then again what constitutes 'big'.  Most smaller boats will be at least 6m I would think.  Usually we have 40 plus people.  Last year 50?  Tobes?

Had a couple of PM's etc and I think we might be full for both trips now. Grounded - I have you on the Aug trip as previously discussed.
Aug Trip - Tagit, Grounded, Loiner, Naki, Andy??, Jim?? Can offer a spare berth or 2 in the flybridge and saloon for sleeping if someone is taking a small boat across, but like to keep the fishing crew to 6 max. Remember to bring ear plugs however as there is at least one badly tuned chainsaw in amongst this lot of reprobates.

Woody/Burwood - need to get a couple of replies from guests I have invited before I can confirm any extra spots on the July trip. Should know in a week or 2 and will get back to you.

had a bit of timeover the last week to get somewhat 'constructive' regards "the rules of engagment" for the Great Barrier - Great Bear Hunt 2008, so once I've cleared them with the Sargent at Arms I'll post up the categories and then go on the scrounge for suitable prizes.....be warned those of you that peddle your wares on the forum....none are safe!

PS....those participating it's time to start honing your Bear Huntin's skills (ie) leave them gay plastic lures at home at least every second trip between now and then so "game day" wont be such a shock to the system.....BEAR eat BEAR FOOD!!

now that's gay. would be interesting to see how SPs fare vs blood n guts.

NO! not gay at all.....this is a bear hunt....there maybe a category for homo plastic users that can't stand the thought of getting their hands dirty.....but let me assure you lot that this is a BEAR HUNT.

Boulder...no one has 'changed' the rules because there are no rules to change at this stage ya poof!

Studio1...no conclusive stats could possible come out of a bait vs plastic weekend....WAY TOO MANY variables spread across way too many other variables.

PS....let's just wait to the format has been advised before the mud slinging and biiitching commences aiiiiight?

Around here, opinions are like a-holes we all have one. Personally I like and use a spinning reel. last trip out Kezza used a overhead and PDS and myself spinning reels. Fishing in 50metres, the overhead didn't do any better.

You will be most welcome delbnz.  Keep your ears on cause someone will be asking for crew for sure and may not see your post.

Some advice:  No soft plastics catches will be eligible for prizes as this is a strictly old school blood sport comp.  That means bait, the bloodier the better.   The warm up event may suit you better if plastics are your thing.

That puts us out, well turn up when the rules change, that was part of it last year and we only had 2-3 rods soft baiting and we did well at it. Very disappointing and our team were looking at spending $600/ head for that weekend.

if it's only about the prizes then this weekend may not be for you anyway Ramprage...sorry but this mid winter get together has NEVER been about the prizes per se....they are just an added bonus to a weekend away with like minded indiviuals doing likable things.....we may have some "booby prizes" for those who elect to fish with plastics, but that certainly wouldn't be in the essence of what this years "committee" wanted to try and achieve......next year you might like to take on the organizing and have it plastics only?

let's not get to stressed out about "rules"....life has way too many of those already!

Warm up event is 4th 5th and 6th July.   No house boat for warm up (as yet) so prizegiving (if any) will be held in the pub at fitzroy or as part of massive raftup.

Question:  How do you successfully and safely raft up say 10 x 6-7m boats.     Do you all back into a circle with anchors out in front and tie off aft to?   Or do you tie off  side by side with boats alternating direction with anchors out?

Or do we just go and tie up at fitzroy wharf and dam the torpedoes?.    That houseboat sure solved a few problems eh.

I guess I better put the big storm anchor on the chain. We can put my normal anchor on the front of one of the other boats for the night as well if needed. We can probably raft up a bunch stern to stern (i.e. say 4 side by side, stern to stern with another 4 side by side facing the opposite way) as long as the wind is down. Cockpit to cockpit means that we can all socialise without trying to squeeze 40 smelly fishermen onto the same boat. Everyone can then break off when they want to hit the sack and anchor seperately for the night.

There is however a rule that must be observed and that is "everyone must use the bog on their own boat". No Toilet Taniwha visitations will be tolerated!

anywhere ya like Greg.....the spirit of it is that we all meet back at base for the after match functions, but it certainly is NOT mandatory.....this thing is just an excuse to go fishing with a bunch of likemindeds.....anything more than that and it can be some elses headache.
