That was the report from a couple of legends of spearfishing (Turls & Hathaway) Where? well lets see who was so forthcoming with info when I asked last time.
LB apparantly , 20m vis a couple of weeks ago and bronze action.
I'm heading out there tomorrow to grab a cray or two.

Diver Dan, I think for most of us average divers to get one goldie is the goal then leave it at that given they appear to be "resident" fish from what I am reading. Most of us weekend divers don't have the knowledge or dive coverage to know where they are anyway, so most of the time we're dreaming if we think we will see them. ------------- Axemen Spearfishing... Wont say where, but I got my first goldie yesterday.
Bloody stoked!
Not a big one by any means, but a goldie is a goldie.
Was underneath an overhang amongst the rubble at what I guess would be about 27metres with the sand at 29-30. School of about 7 of them. Schools of mado cleaning kingies made the dive a bit more scenic. I pretty much sat out the rest of the day because I was chilled to the bone and couldnt get warm but the others reported fish were conspicuous by their absence. A quick splash around for gurnard right on dusk (dunno if it's sensible) resulted in no gurnard, cool story eh.

Yeah you got me..... I got it on a 3 inch Gulp podgy slam nuclear chicken peeler minnow soft bait on a worm hook jig head, 4/0. Rod was a ZX-2000 made by Noodle Rods, with a shimano ABC-1 2 3 reel with beefed up graphite drag washers and spooled with 11.7 pound breaking strain hyper super braid tied with a triple overhand bimini clinch onto the flurocarbon leader.

Here are some little b goldies from yesterday. There were probably 20-30 in the school with some much bigger ones that drift just out of range and at that depth I don't have time to wait for them to drift back.
They were spread out over the sand/rubbly stuff to start with but once we scared them they considerately clumped together.
I dunno DD, I find them one of the few fish that you're usually really breaking your arse to get so are very satisfying

I know these fish are a challenge to get which makes them rewarding to shoot - but can't you just 'pretend' to shoot them? :P It's going to take me a while yet before they're within my dive range and I want to see them - I'll only be taking photos I've decided. Seems to me that maybe they should be considered like the reef fishes... |

Took photos as well but it's just not the same.
The MJL face-full-of-steel criteria is that the fish must be good to eat, challenging to shoot and the over-all population must be healthy and to the best of my knowledge goldies tick all the boxes. Im not saying go down and kill 'em all but we are spearos we kill fish
If you just want to see some theres about a bzillion out at the poor knights

That's taheke reef with the goldies and kings - a couple of technical divers from the uni club were out there in march. A lot of the footage is from around true love reef and the rock closest to it. That was the same trip where seacamel managed to lose both a kingy and a snapper of good size.

Yeah, after the dumbass lost the kingie, me and another guy sorted it out by re-bending it with a pair of pliers - sticks once it goes past 45 now. Before it would stick shut and then wouldn't stick open

Nice! Love watching deep videos. From the (still relatively little) deep spearfishing I've done it seems goldies are pretty prolific as soon as you start getting past 40m or so. I guess this is why I don't take killing them as seriously as some other folk. I do agree it's best to leave the shallow schools so other divers get a chance to see them, but would have no qualms about opening fire on those guys!! |

 Man, sometimes I wonder if us spearos as a whole are as dumb as the sportys and PETA nuts think we are. Spearfishers have got to get more of a gearhead attitude if we want to walk the walk of selectivity and sustainability. It's no excuse to jump in the water with a setup that you know could malfunction.  Ok, I'm off the soap box.

One day at the barrier I shot and lost a couple of snapper coz my flopper was too floppy. I took to it with a rock to de-floppy it, then swam off and promptly shot and lost another three coz it was too un-floppy. I was gutted! Hey Kolt, my girlfriend is called Peta, and yep she thinks spearos are mental.

Ah, I'm sure you're ok, Herby.
On a similar note, I've given up on using stock replacement floppers. I now take the time to reshape them with a dremel so that they work right every time. It's not hard and it's nice to know that you can count on your gear.
