Hi Guys, just got some new toys to play with on my next trip from Gourocks (77b Patiki St, Avondale 09-820-8600).... They have had them a while now, but I just got them, so as far as I am concerned, they are new anyhow! :-) Anyhow, these is they...
On review, I guess I should have got a shot holding one in hand for scale, but the fish are about 25cm long I'd say the squid similar.. in fact I guess that 250/200gm part on the packaging would refer to 250mm .
They are horrendously expensive though, geeez, the squid are...oh, $25, which is up there, but the fish are a horrific $10 ea! Hell, I could afford a few more at that price! :-) Anyhow, thems me new toys, Cheers, Stu.

I've been using one of them Squids (bottom one) for a few years or at least a similar version (River2Sea) and I can't for the life of me catch anything on it....even in the largest of snapper work ups and even when kingies are right under the boat taking dead baits.....possibly just me, but I do keep trying it cause they look sooooo good!
What i have noticed thou is that on the retrieve they seem to helicopter and spin rather than a simple vertical assent with a little wiggle that standard jigs have.

I would say those top bibbed softbaits would get the grumpiest coral trout all barred up if you were able to put one in front of him

A gulp pink shine will do that at a fraction of the price

Hey Kerren, have you tried trolling them? That is something i was looking at trying.
These are river2sea ones, so those would be what you have.
Bit big for snapper though I would have thought?
It will be interesting to see how they go in W.A.
cheers,
Stu.

CA I have used the squid on snapper and caught 40 on one which is still good for another 40. I also used it trolling for albacore where it was a cracker easily out fishing conventional feathered tuna lures. This how I bought mine. I cut the droppers off and stuffed 2-3 small ball sinkers into the hollow body for a bit of weight and threaded the trace through those so that the hook was inside the skirt of tentacles. No more Gulp for me. BTW all my fishing is done from a kayak.

That is interesting.
What size were those squids?
They always have been a very effective tuna lure... for years they were the recommended tuna lure for the bluefin tuna off fiordland, rigged much the way you describe.
cheers,
Stu.

have you tried trolling them? - no I've got too many trollable other things that work, but I'm sure those would as well....but for the "spinning" which I'm sure you could stop easy enough
Bit big for snapper though I would have thought? - hahahaha....perhaps for the ones you target out off Whitianga...I witnessed a 40cm snapper impale itself on a 300gram long jig the other week...snapper are hungus

Ive got some of those river2sea lures to but not much seems keen to munch them. The only fish ive caught so far on them was a real hungus blue/brown cod over on the Barrier.

CA The bigger ones are 5". There are smaller ones too but I have only used the bigger size. No question about it they are deadly both jigged and trolled. Next year when I revisit Papa Aroha I shall stick a cigrette filter into the hollow body and charge that with a shot of tuna oil. Costs bugger all, can be renewed with a new one regularly and easily and would outsmell any commercial brew. That of course depends on whether or not scent does make much difference in soft bait jigging??????
A set of three squid costs $7.99 at Hunting and Fishing and lasts and lasts as you can see from the photo of the much mauled example that has already accounted for 40 odd snapper where before I only got about three per Gulp SB. The most likely reason for its longevity is its ability to slide up the leader and out of harm's way once a fish is hooked in much the same way as a big game lure.

| Oh my stars, look at the lot! 😲😲😲 That trout swimbait might be effective for aussie predators (jews, cod, barra), but if modifications are made (remove internal system and replace it with 1oz jighead, then seal with a soldering iron), it could be effective on snapper, trevally, and kingfish. And the squid jig... It's very realistic at best, but if I use it for mechanical jigging I have to remove the assist hook in the tentacles or it may snag on the rocks; anyways I might keep the hooks on when trolling.
Cheers
