Starting to get the hang of my flash colour sounder and really identify the kings to elimate time jigging "Dead water"

When you mark a big school of kings on the sounder that takes up 20+m of water from the bottom are you guys just jigging through the whole school or focusing on the bottom 5-10m where the big boys hang?
I have always got bigger fish on livies when they are really close to the bottom even if the school is showing alot higher up so just wondering if this is a way to eliminate those pesky rats and get into the HUA sized kings. if this is the case is it more a thing of 5-10 cranks and drop back down or what?

thoughts please

It is hard knowing just how deep your jig is unless you are using a coloured braid like Jig star.  The bottom is your reference, we always drop to the bottom then work upwards.  All/most of our targets are found in the bottom 20m so it makes sense then to concentrate your efforts to this column. If you don't get hits, jig higher then higher up the column.  If you are really energetic, you can jig all the way to the surface like in the old ways Dead.

Our last trip to the Ranfurly, skipper called out the marks on the sounder, often seen to be up to 50 -60m off the bottom.  We would jig all the way through these marks for zilch or a rat.  There is a lot of effort to jig 60m compared to 20m.

The big boys tend to be on/near the bottom.

Mozz like chris said your sounder is a reference all- though i dont take my eyes of mine .If we see fish in a certain depth of water i just possition my boat in a way up current off course so i can watch my jig drop and stop approx in the same depth or close underneath and then watch the frenzy below MATE its better than sky Tv and its digital also last nite i made an observation something the wizard asked me cause his braid isnt coloured Q {how do i kno how far of the bottom am i } by the way he is another Torsa fan so i counted cranks like i always do Torsa is 5.8 ratio and 12 cranks of the handle is 10mtrs aprox depending on how fast the current is of course Like i say bruva its great veiwing and greaty adrenalinSmile watching what is going on below .

Matt Nolan you cant buy my sounder anymore , you mite get one on import i paid about $650 but it has one disadvantage being an import it dosnt read in mtrs but the next model DS500x  is avaliable at B.City on special to bruva i think about $1000 which is cheap usually $1500 I think they are entry level sounders but again its not what it is its how you use it.Wink

I agree with Chris... when you see kingis on the screen, I drop to the bottom, then work to about half way up. every 3rd crank, I bring it all the way to the top if no-one has hooked up (not very often that happens). By that time yuo are usually off the fish anyhow so it is time to circle around for anotehr shot.

Personally I think that the bigger kings roll over and hoon off after the jigs as they drop down thru the school, and then nail it on the way back up again. I think the rats tend to hold in denser masses nearer the top.

If you start getting bored with no hits down deep, it is always fun to bring the pack of rats to the back of the boat with shallow jigging, then at least you see all the fish and everyone, especailly the newbies, just have a blast seeing all the fish.

Finding the kings here at the moment seems to be a prob though... everyone I have talked to these last coupla days are cmplaining about the tons of bloody cudas out there still!
I agree though, a nice colour sounder is a marvellous tool. Be lost without mine!
cheers, Stu.

Mozz, Torsa and Jimi have their patch locked down with the use of their sounders and gps. This is after years of eperience. That screen represents some serious fun i can tell you! After being out with Torsa I've seen its possible to track fish and your jig and find spots that hold different fish like Snapper. It was an eye-opener for me. With all their success, they are still generous with sharing their knowledge and wisdom, whilst practising/preaching conservation in regard to their 'back yard'.

Thanks guys.  Thumbs%20Up

what transducer/mount are you guys running with the Furunos? I've got the 585 w the 600w transom. Thinks its mounted too high at the mo (still Tobez) - she loses the bottom around 18knts.

The boat shop mounted mine too high as well. i had to take it back and get them to shift it to the other side as well. Pissed me off. It was loosing the bottom and skipping on the slightest chop. is sweet now though. It even said in the instructions that it had to be mounted as far below the hull as possible on craft cable of over 35 knots. At first the bottom of the tranny was bearly in line witht the bottom of the hull. Its now mounted on a nylon pad. the bracket should not extend below the bottom of the hull.
It IS possible to have good readings at all speeds. No compromise.

Finally had a chance ot get out on me own boat this weekend, out over the Cobra Rock area, and this is the sort of sign I am used to finding out there.... oh, and the gain is wound right down as well!

Stacks and stacks of kingies. We could see them everywhere under the boat. Jigs, SPs, they were climbing over everything. The big problem was trying to get the larger ones among the masses of rats. Best we could manage out of the scrum were only 20lbs max, but still took home enough to fill the smoker for the guys.

cheers, Stu.

Buying a good brand sounder and a top transducer is the key, losing the bottom is just not an option in any form of the game, and I'm sure there are plenty of arguements but to be successful time and again it is an absolute must. My experience is that the big girls do come from nearer the bottom, however the entire school could be big girls and the jig/bait is just getting hit early. I don't often catch big kings amongst rats but have located bigger fish by sounding other areas which can be very close by.

Mozz

With Our sounders , I have found the Kingi's to look very similar in appearance to the JRC screenshot of Capt Asparagus's. Maybe with more speckled Blue through the  shoal. As opposed to baitfish which have no Blue appearing. Sensitivity set to 85% or the black Squiggly Snapper sign.

I keep my depth range set manually to match our actual depth( autodepth is crap) and increase the sensitivity the deeper the  water gets....

And yep Better/Bigger  ones closer to the bottom I find.

I usually work only 20 30 m up from the bottom and then drop back down...again. mainly Cos I am a Lazy sod.Big%20smile

On mine the bait will also be more a solid red and kings often seem to hang slightly above and to one side of the bait.

I always get the good feeling when I see the more broken sign starting to build off the back of the bait..

When I get a good group of kings they will be more separated and will be orange and show good arches or slashes.

All that said I have caught them over structure in clean water with nothing much showing on the sounder from time to time.
I wonder how far they come for a jig?

The best sign I ever saw was in 90m and it came up like mount Fuji almost all the way!
We pulled big snaps and kings on 300grm jigs and huge fish kept following them up over and over until we were basically stuffed.
