How far down is Thornton Beach bro? If it's anywhere near Waihau Bay you should spend a few hours in the pub, drinking a beer, watching the boats come in and chatting with a few of the locals. There's also a fishing club not too much further down the road in the bay. I've only fished from rocks in the area so I can't really help personally.

Good luck bro

have to get the winds right for the kites...of course. but spinning for kahawai down at the river mouth is the go... mostly sand out there, no snags

Stayed there a week ago! lots of kahawai in the area but mainly small sized ones there were a few snaps caught of the beach by surfcasters and a few more by kite / kontiki fishers.
The standard rig seems to be a running rig but I was using a clipped down pully rig and that worked.
During the day kahawai will be the main catch but its worth getting one our two for snapper baits at night.
Mainly sand out there but check that cross current is not howling as it was a few nights we were there could only just get a 6oz to hold sometimes.

Ive heard of guys spinning at the river mouth with a silver lure. Is this the most productive method? Would be mean to get a couple of KY and then chuck out some KY bait later on for snaps.

Not by the river mouth for snapper, maybe up the beach a little............... Silver hex lure works well

There always seemed to be a fair few people spining at athe river mth.
If you have a 4x4 theres a good track along the top of the dunes.

Cheers Boys, the wind was blowing in from the nor west so it was pretty windy during the day but the Kahawai ran about 1pm on Sat arvo and we got a couple on the spinners, plus we drank a sh*t load of bear and rum so all in all a good weekend.

thanks for the info
