Had a session on saturday with the old man up close to the number 4 marker in the Papakura channel . Headed out from Matakawau just before 11 to fish the outgoing tide and had the first snap in the bin within 10 mins of dropping the pick .
The fish were feeding hard and taking everything that was presented to them with double headers on the ledger rigs very common .
We threw back more fish than we kept , but we did keep 15 snaps 300 mm and bigger (biggest 420 mm )
The only other fish we caught were 1/2 doz macks and a single kahawai , not a shark to be seen which was good .
Trip home was a bit bumpy with the nor-wester , but once we got back into the Waiuku channel and in the lee of the peninsular it was full steam ahead for some coldies .
Sunday was spent slaving over a hot oven Big%20smile

Great Smoker Too.... Do you have a tray with saw dust above the fire to stop the flames/ash getting higher and are the vents at the top back? Looks like an effective Quick smoke?

No vents and no tray , just light the fire with pohutakawa to cook the fish with door slightly open then put on some manuka and close the door , fire goes out and just smokes .
Takes about 3-4 hours to cook and never had any trouble with ash .

Well the small tide rolled around again , but with the wind smashing in from the East I didn't think I'd get out in that muck .
Woke up Sunday at the hour of nine to find the harbour flat as and no wind . A strong coffee and a rub of the eyes proved that I wasn't suffering from post alcohol hallucinations so the boat was loaded up  and out I shot on a solo mission  back to the # 4  in the Papakura channel  for the out going tide  .
Well the action was non stop and allthough I threwback a heap of small snaps , it was fun on light gear ( big ups to whoever invented circle hooks , they are awesome for ensuring returned fish survive Thumbs%20Up )
Kept 8 snapper in the 1 - 1.5 kilo range and 2 solid carrots .
The westerly was up and down and threatening to put a stop to it all but didn't quite get to the " I better get outa here " stage .
All in all a good day out on the big muddy , hope it's this good or better for mum fishing in the Counties Fish'n'Chicks comp this weekend .

Skoti, you seem to be onto something there with the small tide low tide thing.

That boat is a beauty alright, a 38' Gulfstream with a Cat 400hp inside. The guy spent 5 years sticking it together - good on him. I would imagine he will have a few things to sort out, but then he will be into the fish.

Skoti, good luck on the Ladies Day, unfortunately we wont be fishing due to a wedding..... your mum won a weekend away in Vanuatu a few years back if my memory serves me well, wish her luck once again! The Fish'nChicks is a real popular event and could potential eclipse the One Base as our premier event if we don't keep tabs on it. It sure is a load of fun. 270 lady anglers already signed up!

If you want a top secret gurnard spot try this place an hour either side of high, it can produce the occassional big boy (1.3kg last year) use burley on the bottom and a dropper rig (mullet or skipjack), best of all its 5 mins from the ramp. It's produced a first or 2nd gurnard in several of the local comps over the last few years.....Star

S35 05.403
E174 40.033

Just remember it IS a top secret spot so don't tell anyone ok?

As for snapper, if you are getting fish over a kilo then I would be tempted to stick with that, several 1 kg snaps took out daily prizes during the one base ....Confused

Boy oh boy , it's been ages since I last updated this !
I was at the Counties clubs family fishing comp prizegiving , I didn't fish it due to a severe allergec reaction to alcohol from the night previous ( drunk ) but there was some really nice fish weighed in , so I was chomping at the bit to get out there and kill some for my own personal pleasure .
I got the good oil from Smudges son Aaron on fishing SPs on a ledger rig , so was keen to give that a go .
The old man and I shot out to the old faithfull Papakura channel 2 1/2 hours before low tide on sunday and found the snapper very hungry and keen on eating pretty much anything .
Sucessfull baits for the day were....
Gulp Nuc Chicken jerk shad
Gulp Lime Tiger jerk shad
Starlo & Bushies gold/black aniseed smelling thingies
Some Slam lime coloured jerk shad
Mullet
Squid
Salted Bonito
Tiny , scrapy bits of mullet skin that we couldn't be bothered cutting off the hook .
These fish were going for anything and everything presented to them and the bait only needed to touch the bottom before you were on .
We started off with baits and within 20 minutes we had ten in the bin from 330 to 420 .
Nothing big but nothing to complain about .
I started to experiment a little by tying a ledger rig with a 4/0 worm hook and a lime tiger , this soon hooked a few .
We were throwing fish back that 10 years ago would have been in the bin , no questions asked and we having a grand old time !
As the tide slackened I got my 2kg softbait set out and started fishing a ledger rig with three loops , a hook up the top , a 3 oz sinker then another hook at the bottom so that both baits were hard on the bottom . But they didn't last long down there . Double headers were frequent .
I asked the old man if he'd like a turn with the light stuff and it was soon in his hands . I'd only baited the lower hook and as soon as it got to the bottom he was on .
" This is like a bloody toy " he said with his hands fumbling about as he was losing line as fast as he was winding .
" I could've caught two fish in this time " he said laughing .
" You dirty old skull dragger , you have two fish on " I said as they came to the surface .
" There was no bait on the other hook , how the hell did you manage that ? "
" Trucked if I know , Here comes Ray "
Uncle Ray had come out from Big Bay with a mate and we told them to anchor next to us . They were there an hour before they were homeward bound with their limit .
During that time the tidal flow was reaching its end and a 1 oz jig head and SBs were deployed by me . Even at anchor , I was casting forward of the bow and letting the bait drift back so that when it hit the strike zone it was straight down where it was attacked .
There were many times I was loaded up only to drop the fish . All I had to do was drop the rod tip and it'd come back and it'd be on !
Holy heck , who'd a thunk SPs on the ol muddy would get me so excited ! !
End result was an obvious long john for me and the old man , nothing big , but a great day none the less Thumbs%20Up

Skoti.  Have you tried drifting on top of the mudbanks during the outgoing High Tide with SPs?  I've had great success with Pumpkin Seed Minnows, 4" Lime Tigers and when there is nil wind those Peeler Crabs.  I normally drift on the Te Tau Bank as it's close to where I can launch from Waikowhai.  Just a tiny ball sinker and a No.5 or 6 teflon coated Circle Hook for the Crabs and No.4 Worm Hook for the Shads and Minnows on my SP or 6kg Overhead outfit.  Gurnard, better sized Snaps as you described above and the odd Trev.  I also have my Wobbly Pot set up just below the hull of the boat.

Hiya Wee Tin , nope never tried that with SBs , would imagine a fair bit of sucess using that method .
I have drift fished over the banks with bait and done ok after scallop dredges have stired the banks up , not for a while though .

Got up at 7:00 Monday morning hoping the WindGuru forecast was correct .
Couldn't see a thing though as the ol muddy was cloaked in fog .
No wind , top stuff Smile
The old man and I took off from Matakauwau at 8:30 and headed up to the Papakura channel . With the Nor-west wind lazily picking up and blowing the fog off , there was no need for the chart plotter .
Anchoring up for 15 minutes with only small tentative bites we soon realised the snapper weren't keen on exherting alot of energy with big bloody baits .
So with smaller baits on recurve hooks we soon got a few good fish slowly in the bin . It was a bit frustrating though , you'd feel the weight come on the rod , wind up the slack and the rod would straighten up , fishless Ouch
Dad isn't really internet savvy , so he was a bit skeptical about my internet based analysis of the predicted forecast . As a result , no bait was put out the night before . But we did have some salted mullet that would do to start off if need be . Before we headed out he got some bait from the freezer that he said " This is the bait that was left over from Diversity last weekend that we chucked in Perrys deep freeze when we got back . "
My brother in law Perry is a bit of a hunter , so he has a big deep freezer that he can fill with pork and venison when need be .
Dad thought it was time to open one of these bags that had been soaking in a bucket of salt water for a while .
" Funny looking bait , is this squid ? " he asked tearing a small hole in the plastic .
" Probably "
" Aw ship " he said opening the bag up to reveal a 3kg hunk of wild pork .
" That's completely trucked now ! ! "
" Yep , ah well , shark tucker now "  And he hiffed it overboard adding " We won't tell Perry about this eh boy ? "
" Of course not , he'll read about it on the internet before he hears it from me "  Wink

The tide had stopped so we got out the lighter stuff and with it came lighter fish that all went back . I gave the softies a go but had no luck .
When the tide started coming in we got a few gurnard for some reason , strange thing for 22 mtrs of water in a high current spot on the muddy .
We kept 1 carrot , 1 KY and 7 snaps before we called it a day as I had to work the afternoon shift .

These four were in the 5-6lb range and although not long , they sure were fat .

This one went 6 1/2lb .

BTW , yeah mate , now is a good time for snapper fishing on the muddy . April to Julyish is when most of the bigger fish get caught . Our club ( Matakawau boating club ) have two long term competitions running through the year . A 12 month and a 3 month running from  April till the end of June . The 6 1/2 lb fish I got wasn't even worth weighing for either comps . It was only weighed for my personal interest and for the sake of my report .
Wefaknis scored a nice 10 lb fish at the same spot a month or so back ( still crying about that one Cry Thumbs%20Up )
Tennut , if you want to give the muddy a go and need crew give me a yell mate , I don't have a boat ( I use an "oursies" , ie dads ) but I do know the harbour well and can make sure we don't run out of water Wink
Olfart , yep was a bit of a waste and I did wonder how it would go for bait .
Smudge , you may want to re-write that newsletter before it's sent to press ! !

Well the small tide low tide rolled around again , it's probably happened a few times since my last report but words begining with W ( work , weather ) have prevented me getting out there .
A weather window presented itself on Friday before the big winds came . The old man and I shot up to the Papakura channel just after 10 and anchored up at our favorite snapper spot .
It's gurnard time on the muddy at the moment but there's always a chance of a good snap if you are patient enough .
First baits down and I recieved a text from mum .
" U beta do well u hav 2 report 2 john moran when u get back 4 radio "
Hmmm no pressure then aye !
It looked like our main catch for the day was going to be spotted dogs as they came aboard at a steady rate . They can be good eating if processed straight away . We kept 2 and threw the rest back . They were mainly about 1/2 a mtr long .
The old man hooked up and said " this one feels a bit bigger , might be a snapper "
" Could be an eel " I suggested Star
" Get the net boy it is a snapper "
And it was a goody too ! !

For some unfair reason or other , people seem to be catching bigger snapper on the Manukau this year than me Cry
But I am not a bitter person .
Oh no !
So what I did was , I went into my corner of the boat and plotted my revenge .
I thought the " old severed hand on the bait-board " trick would get the old mans heart going LOL

The doctors said he can go home in a few days and provided he takes it easy he'll be able to enjoy his 70th birthday party in a few weeks time Clap

Once the tide started to pick up and our sinkers started rolling we started catching gurnard , nothing big but we kept a couple of eaters .
There hadn't been much wind all morning but it was due in the afternoon so we pulled the pick and headed back to Matakawau stopping at a couple of spots on the way . Dad got a couple of nice KY on his 3 kg rig but by then the sou-east was picking up and put an end to the bite so we called it a day .
Dads snap went 3.56kg and was the only snapper caught .

We got up early on Saturday morning and listened to John Moran on Geoff Thomas' radio show . The old man got a real buzz hearing his name and our report on the ol wireless Clap

It was good to get out there and wet a line after over a month without fishing and it's never too cold for snapper fishing on the muddy ! !

Hi Gurnard

Last December Skoti & I launched from Cornwallis & fished that same Papakura spot that he fished last Friday.  I took my 12 out and it was safe as.  Was virtually wind free when we went out, but a little NW breeze sprang up on the way home.  Skoti had the hard seat in the front of the boat, and I reckon he's an inch shorter since that trip.  Anyways, he's a friendly enough chap, and if you invite him out fishing, he may just show you Spot S (for Skoti).

Well , well , well , 3 holes in the ground and it's my favorite time on the muddy again
I haven't had alot to yahoo about my muddy fishing so far this year and I think a re-think of locations and methods are in order .
With this in mind and my #1 spot X not producing the goods of late , my dad and I shot up to a spot we've named " The Outback " to fish the outgoing/slack/incoming tide on saturday .
Before we got there we were waved down by a couple of friends who were fishing south of Grahams beach .
They had a few in the bin , so we anchored up and had a go .
The rip was fierce but we persisted for a while , dad putting a 320 in the bin . There also seemed to be alot of small pickers so I opted to fling out a 10 grm pink jig in hopes of a KY .
I hooked a piper 3 or 4 cms longer than the jig and thought I must've jagged it with the trebles but it was hooked in the mouth ( perhaps I just jagged it in the mouth )
It was in good condition so I shoved a hook up its bum and sent it out as a livey .
There wasn't much else happening here and it seemed like it was not going to happen at all so we thought we'd stick to the original plan and head up to the Outback .
With promises to call if anything happened we left our friends to it and motored on over glassy seas .
10 minutes later I was on the phone " Get up here now , 5 in the bin , GET UP HERE NOW ! ! "
By the time they anchored up next to us we had 10 in the bin in the 3-4lb range .
Dad got a solid hook-up on a goody but it spat the bait , I decided the free-swimming piper would be better served hard on the bottom and that got a huge hit but didn't stick Ouch
Mullet and squid were the baits of the day , though I did get one on a lime tiger and another on the pink jig .
The tide dropped off and we were back to throw-backs and with a few more bigger fish in the bin we decided to call it a day .
It had been absolutely glassy all day and on the way back in I noticed a big patch of broken water ahead of us . Turned out to be a school of KY attacking sprats .
We slowed down and I hiffed the pink jig into the mix and hooked up on a 25 cm KY that self released at boatside . A couple more did the same .
There seemed to be 2 or 3 boil-ups that would sound on our approach only to resurface 30 odd meters away and KY of uniform size were everywhere .
It was a great spectacle and with no other boats around we decided it would be a giggle to drive through a patch at full speed
I don't know what KY think or if they think at all , but seeing a few dozen jump out of the water boatside as we mow through them at 50 horse powers an hour , I bet they thought WTF ! ! LOL

Good to hear that you were getting into a few on Saturday, Skoti Clap

I was out eastside yesterday with TL2 and his family and we had the same experience with small workups of KY all over the place, which tended to sound as we approached them only to reappear a bit further away.  Moving fast, too - so it was difficult to stay in touch.

We had planned to go wide, but with moderately lumpy conditions in the morning and a couple of young 'uns aboard, we only got out as far as the Noises.  We stopped for lunch at Woody Bay and then poked our nose around the back of the Noises and found conditions were settling so spent a couple of hours drifting across the back of both islands picking up the odd panny here and there, but it was hard going.

Well after a few birthday drinks in the wee small hours of friday morning I arrived at the parents place at Matakawau at 2pm to find "oursies" boat not there ! !
Nooo , the ol mans gone without me Cry
Luckily I found a note on the table saying he was just off the point targeting carrots and to text him when I was at the jetty .
Thank flip for that , with the forecast for the weekend this was the only opportunity we'd have .
We shot straight out to the Papakura channel to our favorite spot and dropped the pick .
We were into small tentative bites straight away so downsized the baits and ended up catching small snapper . Usually these have buggered off by now but they seemed in plague proportions .
The tide slackened and dad got a carrot to go with the one he'd got off the point .
It was starting to get cold and the sun was sinking down towards the Waitakeres .
Hopes of a nice snapper or two were fading fast when R-holder sprang into action and line was lost off the TLD15 , the jelly-tip rod had a healthy bend on as I stole it from R-holders grip .
" Probably one of your 7 gill sharks " suggested dad .
" Bullship " I replied " This has all the classic hallmarks of a good snapper , you ought to pay attention , you could well learn a thing or two "
Dad said something about a leaky trucker , but I was too busy hauling a 3kg snapper to the surface for him to net .
" Nice , we've been waiting a while for this eh "
" We could do with a few more like that " he said .
" Better check your rod then " as it took on an arc-like shape in the holder .
For the next 30 minutes it was all on , good fish coming aboard faster than we could clear the net .
" As much as I hate to say it , we'd better get out of here before it gets dark " said dad as the sun went behind the Waitak's .
We headed for home with smiles on our dials and met a couple of our club members at the ramp who hadn't done so well .
We gave them a few fish and they gave us a few coldies and we had a bit of a yarn with them till they ran out of beer and it was time for home .

We kept these for ourselves plus the 2 carrots .

Look at those fat puku's , they must have a taste for Castlepoint too !

All fish were in the 3 1/2 - 7 lb range , nice going for the muddy Clap

Yep we are heading out tomorrow from French Bay. Last week Kes from down the road got a 62 cm snap up Cornwallis way, and the week before I was out with the guy I'm going fishing with tomorrow and we came back with 26 carrots. Big tide, big rip tomorrow, hope there's not too much weed but we'll see what happens.

How did you get on Muddy ?
I'm not a fan of fishing the bigger tides on the muddy for snapper , far too much rip in the the deeper parts ( 20 mtrs + ) where I like to fish .
I've had a few theories about where to fish on the bigger tides but have had no luck as yet .

Wefa , were those fish caught at the one base by the brothers Miller ?
If so , that's the spot we call " the outback " it's about 600 mtrs WWNW of oursies Wink

Hi Skoti. We got our bag limit yesterday. 12 carrots and 28 ky's that got smoked up today.

It was a 4.2 tide, we were fishing in about 14 meters out from Cornwallis. We were lucky with the weed. The fishing was hard and fast with double and triple headers. I was getting down on braid with 3 oz's of lead. Great day, flat calm, heaps of action.

Hey Scoti,

Got out again in the 8 footer in front of Wood Bay today.

After all the rain, all I expected was ky, and that's wot I got;

Fished 3-5.30pm (5.07 high) 3.8m tide. Wind - 15/20kntsN/W, Depth - 2-3m.

Take home result - 10ky and 1 couta.

The ky's are all good smokers and what was once a vicious fiesty gearsmashing snake is now bait.

It was a bit cold and wet out there but still better than watching Wales do the AB's again......

Me and Roy went out in front of Cornwallis today and came back with our bag - 40 carrots (35-49cm big and fat), what was released were 12+ ky + 1 couta, 1 greyboy and a rig.
Fished 11.30am-4.00pm. 3.7m tide. 7m of water. Wind 5knts N/W. Bite time was all the time.

The forecast for Saturday was looking mint so a plan was hatched with Olfart and Far Quirk to hit the muddy .
The plan was to have a go at some gurnard and then get into some snapper .
We took off from Matakawau and headed south to a spot that had some serious gurnard potential .
So serious we found two gurnard gurus locked in a battle of carrot catching carnage .
I don't mind admitting I'm not much of a carrot catcher , often I will leave prime carrot harvesting pastures no more than 5 minutes from the ramp to seek snapper in the Papakura channel .
So I thought this would be as good a place as any to anchor up .

Here we see Smudge trying to cut John Morans line as he's hooked up . Dodgy bugger LOL

These guys had enough empties on board to start their own recycling station and they were in fine spirits !
It was great sharing knowledge , bullship and insults across the water at each other .
By this stage they both had 17 carrots each so hopes were high for a good catch .
Or had they just brought in their long line Wink
Hmmmm LOL
We started off slow but the target species were present and a few were soon in the bin .
The current was getting up and perhaps we should've got there a bit earlier so Smudge and JM up anchored and went looking for greener pastures . Soon after we were off too with 7 carrots in the bin Wink and headed up to the Papakura for some snapper action !
And action it was , absolute non-stop , every bait smashed and snapper coming over the sides at an incomprehensible rate , completely overwhelming my good companions with their viscous and relentless attack .
How embarrassing Embarrassed
They were all undersized Embarrassed
And I was like " hello little snapper , it's winter and the water temp is 12 degrees , umm maybe piss off eh "
But no , there they were , everywhere and if it wasn't small snaps it was sharks . No 7 gill tackle-takers though but FQ did land a tackle-taking coutta that now resides in the bait freezer
The tide slackened and turned and a few bigger ( but not by much ) snapper got hauled up when I felt a bit of weight come on my rod .
Winding up , the rod took the full strain and line started peeling off as something soon realised that something was wrong with this mouthfull .
FQ on the other side of the boat was attached to a good snapper and dealing to it while OF was looking on with a smile on his dial .
I was sure I was onto a goody when FQs second rod held by rod holder took a sudden and dramatic bend for the depths .
There was nothing for it so OF had to take the reigns .
Much grunting and big breaths soon filled the air as all three fish were wound to the surface at what seemed like the same time .
FQ got his aboard and quickly netted mine while OF trusted the trace and got his in too .
For a moment there was a weird silence as it slowly dawned on us at what had just happened . Then we started whooping ! !

This one went 3.59 kg

This fat bugger went 4.55 kg

After much high 5's and pictures we got back into it and found the current had picked up considerably .
FQ picked up a nice trev but it was time to head in with the currant starting to rip and the light failing .

A bin shot...

A stink foot comparison , note how the fish have a similar length but nearly a kg separates them ..

A happy trio Big smile

Stop holding your fish towards the camera Grant , you know mines bigger LOL

A bloody good day out with bloody good mates , cheers for your company Thumbs Up Clap Big smile

Ucking fexcellent day!  Chauffeur driven by Olfart to Matakawau, then the 3 misfits pile in the boat & Skoti's dad delivers us & launches the boat.  Not so much as a drop of water on our footsies.  Felt like Lord Muck!

As usual a wide selection of fishies graced the decks, unlike the Waitemata, where it's 95% snapper & 4% KYs.  As Skoti mentioned we had snaps, carrots, coutta and trevs, but also 2 or 3 kinds of shark, and a KY.  Shame about the goldfish.

Great to see Skoti score a snapper PB.Clap  Just sneaked over the 10lb mark by an oz or so.  After the pack attack of decent snaps it went a bit quiet and we sent a message to arrange yet another 3 Lords Muck transfer from ramp to base.  Great to experience the Muddy on a cracker winters day, barely a breeze to ripple the surface.  And Matakawau is a magic spot.

All in all a day to put in the memory banks and relive when the weather's stinking (like now) and water is far away.

As we all know, Skoti is a real modest sort of a cove - but it should be mentioned here that his fish was a PB for him and smack on the 10lbs in the old weights.  Onya Skoti...Clap

(Ooooops...I see FQ beat me to the punch on that LOL)

And was I really holding my fish out to make it look bigger?  You betcha...Big smile  (Or maybe it was because I have short arms...) Wink Shame it had to be caught on FQ's rod though, but he was too busy with the fish he had on his other rod so I just had to answer the call.  And I learned that there are big snapper in the Muddy after all....Big smile

It sure was a great day out and FQ and I made the drive back down the peninsula in the dark very happy with the way things turned out.

Grand fishing Skoti and co. A double figure Manukau snap is a very great achievement. Well done you guys!

However, I came home from a fish out the Ahas yesterday (skunked) to the news that some rotten scurvydog has stolen my trusty 8' Manukau parkercraft. So my Manukau fishing effort will be somewhat blunted until I can find (afford) a replacement boat. I lost most of my fishing gear out of my locked shed last year, and another dinghy to thieves a year or so before that. Why is NZ so full of rotten thieves these days? Back in the '60s and 70's you could leave your gear near anywhere and it would be respected and not stolen.

Great fishing anyway guys,  its not often we see fish like that over this side of the harbour.

Try working for it like the rest of us have to, you may just find it more rewarding. Fat chance.
I have been soaking up this forum like a big sponge as I have just got myself a wee inflateable and as Muddy knows my old trusty Evanrude 2hp that now won't idle thanks to number one son having abused it for the last few years. Any ideas guys?
When I finally get of the beach I will with all the great experience of this forum hopefully stay safe and have some fun.
I have only ever fished the Manukau of the beach so won't be going fare for a while.

Muddy, as much as we all enjoy a change of scenery it's pretty hard to beat the Manukau on a good day that carrot harvesting of yours is in fine form!

Dumbedown, sounds like that little motor needs a good service. I would start with draining the carb and checking around for air leaks where it is clamped on. A new spark plug wouldnt hurt.

Skoti, FQ and OF. Nice to see you guys out there. Skoti, I starting to think that while John Moran is the undisputed gurnard guru out there you got to be the snapper guru. That's a seriously good catch and an awesome PB. Star

I don't know how many people have read the book by Mavis Brambley titled " Sea cockies of the Manukau " but i thoroughly recommend it .
Although not entirely about fishing , some of the stories in this book make me long for those good old days when large snapper were plentiful in the harbour and it was only a matter of tossing a handline overboard , waiting for the burn of cord through your fingers as a sizable snapper took your bait .
One tale tells of Mavis rowing out a couple of hundred yards from her home at the top of the Awhitu peninsular and catching 20 odd snapper from 8 to 14 pounds .
Snapper of this size and bigger were common back then .
Imagine if we could go back in time with the lightweight sporty gear we use these days .
Fun , yes and all on Aucklands back doorstep .
Have a look at this 12 1/2 lb Manukau snapper .

Now look again Wink

I took this picture today Smile
Followers of this thread will have allready guessed that me and the old man took off from Matakawau and headed straight to the Papakura channel to fish over the slack water at the top of the tide so there was probably no point writing all that Confused
Ah well never mind Embarrassed
As per previous excursions , the last of the incoming tide supplied us with small and undersized snaps .
History dictated that we'd most likely get some keepers at the slack water and turn of the tide and the chances of something bigger were definitely on the cards .
The water temp was 12 degrees and with the plague proportions of smaller snaps this spot wasn't about to shut shop for the season just yet .
We picked up a few in the 1 1/2 - 2 kg mark and chucked them in the bin and as the tide started to ebb a few more bigger ones turned up .
We then did something we don't normally do . We upped the sinker weight to 16 ozs and fished on .
The tide ripping past the boat gave an illusion of traveling about 6 knots .
Dads rod bent fierce and line was stripped off the Penn .
We figured it for a stingray/shark at least and a kingy at best .
A slow but sure battle ensued .
" I want to have a look at it even if I lose it " said dad .
And after 10 minutes it came up to the net .
You ****en ripper Clap

Back home to the scales and it went 5.72 kgs .

Others in the bin paled in comparison despite their good size .

An excellent snap for dad , well done mate Clap Thumbs Up Clap

Who's ya daddy Thumbs Up
