OK, here is the PLAN.
Thursday 17th - I'll be at the Whakatane Game Club & have some dinner around 6.15pm. Off to the Coastguard building around 7.15pm. Make a start on the training at 7.30pm. This off-water clinic is important if you want to learn knots etc so please get there before 7.30pm. Please have your $80 cash ready for the PR bobbin & assist components, $40 if you don't need the PR bobbin. Bring your tackle to this clinic.
We should finish around 9.30pm enough for a night cap then hit the bunks aboard Pursuit.
Depart wharf Friday 18th early for White/Volkners. Whole day spent jigging & coaching techniques etc. After a couple drifts I'm sure you will all be sorted out and you'll enjoy the rest of the day.
The coaches are myself, Jimijig and Ginga. Jimi needs no introduction to you but Ginga is the dark horse who has logged a few offshore trips with me at the 3 Kings (with jimi) and White whilst in the company of the famous Yoichi Mogi - the man who re-invented jigging as we know it. Ginga has just taken delivery of a new 7m charter boat and intends specialising in jigging and soft plastics and is based in Tauranga. Collectively, we possess the experience and wisedom that will kick start you all into the dark arts of jigging. So keep your minds open to different ideas and techniques, the day on the water will put you to the test. If the Kingies play ball, then I'm sure you will all enjoy the experience.
I'll have a few Zest prizes to give away near the day's end so be sharp as you may be the lucky jigger.
N.B. all Kingies will be released after the obligatory photos.

Rick asked if anyone would be keen to haul a lure while out there. I said keen beyond a doubt, but I think we need to stick to our plan. Need to make the most of our opportunity to learn from our men running the clinic.

This sort of thing needs to work in with my busy program so I need lots of advanced warning. Cheap "grab-a-seat" fares help in the timing .

Uhunter (Nathan) has reminded me that the Whakatane Game Fishing Club has a great restaurant, bar, showers etc that are available to us. But we must all sign in as a group. Nathan and his father will be there at 6pm to facilitate this and transport some of us to the Coastguard building down the road.

It may require some careful timing though..........

I will bring my vid camera and digital, i will be able to cut some to disks later on and distibute out, so probably no need for everybody to bring cameras and all get the same photos, this also helps to minimise time fish spend out of the water which is all good.

Bring these jigs -
e.g. if you bring 10 jigs, make up should as follows -
300g x 3
400g x 4
500g x 3
Tackle should preferably be PE8. If you have a PE5 outfit then bring that along too. This type of jigging is NOT light line or IGFA stuff.

I got some home made jigs that I'll bring along. Think I need to give them a bit of flashing up though. At this stage they are just long Stainless Steel pipe that rattle when jigged. #8 wire technology.
Thanks for the offers hopefully I can get a couple more sorted out before next week.

Hey guys everyone going on this trip should clear up now whether or not they intend to keep any fish, could be interesting if we are fifty km offshore and someone decides to kill a fish and everybody else wants to release. IMHO kingies are great to eat but on a trip like this i would like to release saying that i do get plenty of oppurtunies to catch one for a feed when i desire. The guys who dont get to sample kingie flesh very often may want to take some home and if they are paying good money for the trip it is their perogative to do so. My suggestion would be if people are going to keep some fish then as a group we should set our own limits and not turn this trip into a harvesting mission.
What if we get a yellowfin or two i would loooove to take home some of those tasty buggers.

I will state that killing Kings is a personal perogative and I don't want to stop anyone taking home a feed back to the families. I think that Rick has a boat limit of one King per person per day which I think is sufficient for any angler to kill.

Saturday's alright for jigging.... (to the music of Elton John ).
Jimi, Myself & Ginga were planning on a jig in Ginga's new charter boat out of Tauranga. Originally Diverbloke and his mate were going to join us but Diverbloke had a fight with a chainsaw last weekend & now both are pulling out of this and the clinic too.
So the Thursday/Friday clinic now has 2 vacancies and 2 vacancies for jigging Saturday out of Tauranga. Firstly is there any more interest in filling the 2 vacancies for the clinic? Murf is there a reserve list?
Any interest from 2 guys wanting more jig time on Saturday for $100 each? PM me on this matter.

Hi Honey, I was thinking... would it be ok if I go fishing this weekend? I know it's the public holiday and we had planned to go camping with your mother and the toddler.
Sure, what did you have in mind, saturday morning, south coast or pukerua bay?
Oh, Just Tauranga on Pursuit for a couple of days. You know, fly there, famous charter boat, fish like a madman with the jigmeisters, get very little sleep, there might be a small 'social occasion' and I should be back in time for work on tuesday...
It's probably lucky I missed the boat.
It's nice to see these sort of events come to pass through the forum and respect to all those involved.
I know you probably aren't looking forward to it and you might not enjoy enjoy the weekend but I hope that you try to make the most out of it.

I am sure that Rick will make the correct call. We had a trip planned a few years ago with him and the weather was doggy for the long haul out to White, so we made the call to head to Whale and see what it was like the following morning. Rick knows the area very well and his advice was spot on, would have been a nasty night getting to White.
Just have to play it by ear.
