I've already got a few reels suitable but don't want to break up the combo's they are already on sooo.
new reel time again.
The rod is probably going to be a JM terminator 200, being used for snapper mainly.
It'll have at MAX 15lb line.
Was thinking of a saltist 30 with the 4.1 ratio,,,
Yea, nah? Maybe I should be looking at something else?
Cheers

Have to agree with Moocha. A tad heavy perhaps for the 200 but well made. Alternatively have a look at a Saltiga 20 from one of the US sites on ebay. With our dollar being so good you should be able to pick one up for under $450 landed.

Yea I've actually got two torium 16s already and do like them, but I've been wanting to try something in a slower ratio than the 6.2.
I really like the look of the saltiga but am firmly set on the sub $400 thing (even if it is only 50-odd bucks) as its from an insurance pay out and I've already ordered two custom rods and another couple of reels that will cut what I lost, 9 set ups, down to just 3.
I've also been offered a black magic BMX (or could be BSX) from a mates dad, maybe that could be good? I was going to use it for something else but who knows...

Hey Badfish what line do you have on the Torium 16, do you think you could run 80lb on them?

Chopsticks is right on the money with reel reccomendations. Perhaps you can look at the small Toriums 12 or 14. If they are like their big brothers, they would be pretty decent reels but I'm unsure about gear ratios and you can beef up the drags with a Carbontex kit and a Cal's Drag Plate. Small Avets don't have the drag perfomance neccessary for bigger Kingies but maybe OK for snapper.
You've been loitering around Decoros again!

bugger small avets for jigging
I think a torium or saltist30 is the ticket. I have a saltist50 with silly amounts of drag and I think the same can be done to a 30.

I only run 8kg mono on one and 10kg braid on the other.
I know of people that run 80lb on the 30s, and it's my understanding that the 16 is just the narrow version of that so I guess you could.
Mine both put out about 24lbs of drag at max, although shimano list that all three 16,20,30 all have the same 20lb max. I've done no up-grades to mine yet, only re-greased them from new.

Flag the torium, check out the new tyrnos 16 I dont know what they are worth, may or may not be in your budget.
I just got a saltist 30t and its a pretty good little reel. All metal, better drag than the torium, better antireverse, for about the same money. Not as smooth as the torium but thats because the torium is soft , oh and the bearings are shiite, and the drive shaft cracks, and the drag washers turn into graphite powder ummmmm, and the handle is awsome till the rubber falls off and it breaks......
Buy the saltist

What strength braid are you running on that bad boy?
Was thinking of getting one and spooling with 50lb braid...

Cheers for that Benk. I'll leave the toriums on their set ups and go the Saltist.
I'd like the saltiga, who wouldn't, but atleast I'll be left with a bit extra for some new pliers, jigs etc.
Now what to spool er with....
Look out for another jig newbie thread comin your way soon

On the salitist?
Probably 50lb but I have some 80 so Ill probably just chuck that on. Doesnt really matter as it'll probably only be able to dish out about 10kg give or take. 80 is a good number when you get a tangle with someone, and much less prone to random breakage which I have experienced with 50lb

I'm fishing on a yak and 50 is waaaaaay to hard to break if I get snagged up, actually 30lb is pretty hard to break too but with a bit more shoulder press at the gym I've got it sussed .
Plus I'm mainly targetting snapper etc with kings as a by-catch
I think I might just top shot it with a couple hundy of the 10 or 15kg black magic rainbow stuff.
I know I could go a much lighter reel for that kind of line but , well, I dont want to

For the price of the Black Magic I'd seriously consider the Salt Max braid. Very thin, high quality Jap made braid. Bear in mind that the Saltist 30T takes about 300m of 37kg braid, so if you're looking at 15kg you're definitely going to have to top shot or have very deep pockets.

Cheers for that CS, I must admit I haven't looked at a price comparison of any brands other than Jig Star and BM.
And with what I've spent on tackle these last couple of months I'll be lucky to have any pockets at all soon!

If you're thinking Terminator TC200, then PE3 (30lb) is what you want. You can find the Saltmax and the YGK Ultra braid at http://www.jigsdirect.com - www.jigsdirect.com under lines.

Still think you should go the extra $50 or so and get a Saltiga 20. It would be a perfect match to the Terminator TC200. The Saltist 30T is quite a bit heavier and really better suited to a JM 350 or similar. I have several Saltigas and they're beautiful reels and even though it may hurt at the time the initial cost is soon forgotten. After all, $50 won't even fill a petrol tank.

Well,
Looking at that, what do you rekon about going the SA15?
Accourding to what I've read there and on the daiwa.com I'd only be loosing 70m of line cap of mono from that and the SA20, and mines not going to be all mono anyways.
It's that little bit lighter again taking it to a total of 8.4oz lighter than the salist and its got another kg of drag.
And its give or take $30 cheaper....
AND its a saltigaaaaaa
Damn you chopsticks!
I could always sell more crap I guess!

Absolutely! I was going to suggest the Saltiga 15 if you don't need the extra line which, as you say, isn't that much less than the SA20. Jimi also uses the SA15 and rates it highly. You can also up the drag by using an extra washer under the star drag.
Beautifully made little reels that are built like the proverbial you know what.

So now we've just got to figure out the best way to get it sent over to me. I've budgeted for $420 so looks like I'm well under, especially if he can get his work to pay for the shipping

See I don't have the confidence to start cutting up my new saltiga... Mind you, jigging for snapper is a fair way off hauling the green and yellow pigs up.
How do you find such a big handle on such a small reel?
I guess thats kind of a stupid question seeing as how you obviously like longer hanldes, but does it make the reeel feel unbalanced at all?
