Hi guys, I have a option to get a cheap ntiq 9 1/2 ft #7 which will be perfect for kahawai and sea runner chasing. I've been strongly advised to line it with a nine weight line by a guy who used to own one., I've cast it with a really cheap wf9f line and cast OK, and I'm a really average caster so would'nt know much better. Just wondering given it's rated by the manufacturer at 7# should I start off lining it with a seven, eight or nine weight line. I don't want to blow my dough on lines that i won't use. Just kinda hoping someone has experience with these rods. They are real grunty rods, love the finish and feel of them and the price is very right.

There's a few comments about this rod at

There's more to fishing than catching fish - but catching fish is a big part of it.

I have a 10wt in this series and really dont like it. I can cast a full line with it but it just feels horrid! I bought it for a good price as needed a 4 pce in a hurry for the Solomons but I am building something to replace it v soon. I would cast it before you commit to buiying it if you can, it may suit you but may not.

I'm fairly convinced personally they are dogs... They didn;t win favor years ago when they came out and I have seen nothing to convince me otherwise.

They were built by CD, and while I'm no big fan of their rods, this one seems to have gained universal condemnation... I like some of their others rods more...

They seem to be tough, but so hard to fish with... they have been discarded by most who tried them.

Of course, everything has its admirers and it may well work for you.

I did think it felt quite nice to cast with but it was lined with a #9 and the model is the 9'6" 7#. Certainly felt as good if not better for my style of casting (or lack thereof) than a 8# FLi, but the FLi was cast with an 8# so perhaps the overlining by two weights made the difference, and like I said the price is very, very right ( a third of the price of an FLi). Thus leaving money to invest in a second rod (likely to be a 10 weight Fli, or 9 weight Cd ICT- love the way they feel.) so two rods instead of one really. Really just wondering if it's ok to overline the NTIQ by 2 weights,or if inded this is normal!

If you get it for the right price then why not? Heck if it comes to that you can sell it for what you paid for it... and if not it'll be a great cheap back up rod if you decide you don't like it.

Base your decision on price and if you think it's a steal grab it... you probably can't lose on that basis.

Ki
As far as line weights and rod matches go, These are designations by the rod maker/designer as to what they see fit as to how they designed the rod to behave, with a given action.
Some shops overline rods just so people can feel them load. Whatever feels good to you, as Clark has said, because for all you know the 9 weight line you cast might have been labelled wrongWink

Went for it and grabbed the rod ($250 brand new is not bad going I thought) and had a cast- love it! Slightly underloads on a T200, the T300 is perfect. Awesome machine is really an 8# as it turns out. Anyhow thanks to everyone for there advice and help, I'll be getting out hunting the old cook straight sailfish, Kahawai and anadromous species in the coming weeks and hope to post a few pics when and if I nail something, all the while pinching the pennies for that sage FLi 10# in time for kingi season.

I could be interested, I may be the only one in NZ who actually likes those rods, how much were you wanting for it so I can put the business case to the wife!
