What are the methods, other than wire, to stop the sharp toothed critter having there way with jigs. I did hear somewhere about putting a twist in the doubled line???

I add hard piece of tube over assist cord, better than heat shrink

As jimijig says, I find the heat shrink to be not that durable. I have some lumo  tubes (the kind that looks like a cigarette holder) which I will now try fitting over the assist hook ala jimijig style.

As for the leader, I have about 6-8inches of twisted double. I hold the leader about 20inches from the end, and with the other hand, start twisting the tag end until the line start naturally binding together to form the twisted double. I then secure the twist using a figure of eight knot. The double is secured to the solid ring (which is attached to the jig via a split ring) using a palomar knot.

ChrisW uses a series of half hitches to form 3-4 inches of reinforced leader up from the solid ring:

Zest now have assist hooks made with heavy wire so ask your retailer for them.

If you are wanting to protect the jig, then as jimi & sooshee have suggested.  Some jiggers use a short 20-30cm lenght of wire between leader and jig.

A way of protection is to put  a thimble onto the assist hook then thread about 30cm of leader. Crimp leader hard against the thimble then twist the remaining 30cm tag against the leader and crimp again. The twisted double portion can be anything from 10 - 30cm long.

Thanks guys I'll give all of the above a whizz over the coming fishing trips. It's not the having to buy new jigs that hurts, but it's aways the one that working best that day that gets crunched by a cudda...

What about the coutta hitting the PR knot guys?

We were using 200lb trace and lost quite a few jigs in the weekend where the coutta were hitting the leader knot and slicing through the braid.

Does making the leader longer and therefore knot further away from the jig help?  I guess going to smaller leader would make the knot smaller and less visible but not keen to go lighter.

I've been giving this some thought and think you're on the right track about making the leader longer. I know Jimi uses about 15 metres of leader and I haven't yet see him get cut off at the PR knot. It's possible that this knot makes a fair bit of turbulence under water and that's what attracts the snakes. Once again, our benevolent Jigging Master, Jimi, uses a lot shorter PR knot than most of us use and this, naturally, would create less turbulence. The more I fish with Jimi the more I realise that we are lucky to have him share his fishing genius and experience freely with us.

If using multi coloured braid then making sure that no white or yellow sections are used when tying the PR knot reduces the risk. I lost a brand new Sanme jig on it's first drop at the 3 Kings to a snake that hit my PR knot right on a small white section of spliced braid. Cry

I've never seen the PR knot hit by couta yet and I've never seen failures on any properly tied PR knot.  Keep the leader long, heavy and learn the PR knot!
