The crew gathered at the Whakatane game Club on Friday arvo for a few coldiesThumbs%20Up and some tucker before loading all the necessary gear, and then some, onto Pursuit. Soon enough we were briefed by Rick and heading out through the bar.

It was a snotty, roll'ie trip across to White which didn't really agree with a couple of the crew. .. Rick did say the flybridge was the "top of the pendulum". . .. Wink

Pitch black and blowing hard, we anchored in the lee of White and went bait fishing, well attempted to. It was very slow with the baitfish not really playing fair and its nothing to do with lack of baitfish, they were just bloody hard to catch.

With 30 or so baits in the tub the last fisho hit the hay about 3am. .  big effort there Ratso!!!

Saturday morning saw us waking to the homely aroma of bacon cooking and seeing we were it really hit home what i/we were about to take part in. A good feed was had and we headed to the place where big Kings live.Big%20smile

Rick put us on a couple of pins, did a dummy drift, went back to the start of the drift and it was GAME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Livies went down, jigs went down. . . ahhh . .  and I think a couple of beers may have vanished as well. ..

I have no idea who hooked up first but people did, including myself but even all the kind words of encouragement from Rick i couldnt get the fish to stick. .. FAK!Pinch

So I baited up again on the next drop, bait got taken, played with, hooked up, not hooked up. . . FAAAAAARRRRKKKK!!!!!!! Rick was again more than willing to offer his encouragement.

The next bait got inhaled. . . been a loooooong time between drinks for the KeenOne but I was more than willing to again be impressed with the power these fish posess. A short battle in sued on the 37kg gear and the gaff was stuck into a 17kg model.

I sat out a drift and enjoyed a coldie and watched others get all bent up by White Island Steamtrains. GREAT viewing!!

Gavin gettin some treatment. . .

Babb's catchin' a train. . . and it aint goin' to GeorgiaWink

We had one more drift before meeting up with another boat back at the Island. The deckie Zane loaded my 9/0 with the biggest livie in the tank and on handing that livie to me he said hang on. . . . . lets just say Zane knows his stuff!

As I was free spooling the bait down it got hit by a steamtrain, counted to 3 and went to strike on the Penn 30 and got dragged to the rail as line peeled off, Zane clipped me in and got Rick to start the boat. Here was the LeMon strapped to a fish that did not want to relent, and didnt ..   it took line, I took some back. Rick was telling me to kiss your ass goodbye Drew. . . dont f**k it up Drew as the fish had everything in its favour.

I was told that it required a certain amount of mongrel to beat these fish, so I found mongrel and became hell bent on breaking this fish.

Between short-strokin and using the lift of the boat I felt like I was getting somewhere. . but the fish read my mind and headed for the bottom again forcing me to put both hands on the rail whilst sitting into the harness with my knees against the coaming. The power of this run/fish simply blew me away, especially on finding out later that I had 22kg of drag on this fish.

Things were starting to go my way a bit more and then others started positively affirming the condition of the fish as colour could be seen.

It wasnt until Rick had the trace that I caught a glimpse of the brut, I cant type what I said. . . . . . .

The transom door was opened and the fish pulled on board for measuring, tagging, a couple of pics and then i fired the White Island Express back into the water.

I had just achieved something I have wanted to do for a long, long , loooooooong time and thats what this trip was all about.

Everything was squared away and we headed back to meet with the other boat and have some lunch.

A hearty feed of pasta and we made our way back to the grounds and on arrival found that the fish had gone, the lights were on but here sure as hell wasnt anyone home.

Rick moved us to another area and found some good sign over terrain that really wasnt in our favor but he set us up for the drift and the bell went . . . .ding  .. ding  . . round 2

Every drop there were reels screaming, rods buckling . .  memories being made. . .  some good, some bad. . . .

These 3 thought it would be good to tangle with Kings, and themselves! all 3 fish were landed. .  .Clap

The KeenOne isnt sure whether he got 3 or 4 20-23kg, all TnRd, fish in the afternoon but every fish nailed the bait on the way down and this is the best way to get hit. The thrill of feeling the free spooling line triple in speed  . . . well, to say it floats my boat is a huuuuge understatement!!

.

We stayed at this spot till about 5ish before heading in for some bottom fishing and more bait catching. The bottom fishing wasnt particularly hot and we went and anchored for the night, had a feed and tried to catch bait for the next days onslaught.

Im amazed at how hard these baitfish can be to catch. . .. . they were that hard to get that were a lot of I hope you guys like Terahiki fishing jokes going around. . .

attempting to fill the tub. . .

Day 2 saw us heading out the grounds in much a much friendlier sea state seriously under-gunned in the livie department, hopefully they were fairly keen on nailing metal as they were the previous day.

I went in the first drop and it didnt take long before the line started to disappear real quick . . I hit it and fak me if this fish didnt hit me back. . . .. . I got smoked, well and truly.

Greg got smashed as well but he was lucky enough to keep his on and holy shet did it give Greg a going over . .  pulled string like no tomorrow, had Greg on the rail numerous time. Rick fired Greg up with some positive encouragement along with other advice and the fish came boat side and it was a very good fish, fish of the trip in fact at 35kg.

The jigger were getting amongst it along with the livies with fish averaging 20 24 kg

Babbs was getting seriously amongst the fish and quickly became Ricks pet. . .  Gavin got amongst em on jigs. Jb got some very nice fish on jigs. . . I think ol Koro even got slightly jiggy with some kings on jigs.

Koro got himself all strapped up to one of the many setups he took and sent a bait down to meet its maker. . . . . Koro was ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I think the fish may have taken a wee bit of line from winch he was strapped to. . . .. Ill let the photos tell the Tale of Koro. .

get in there son!!!!!!!!!

.

Just look at the youthful determination would ya!!!!!!!!

Ka Pai koroClap

We did a bottom bash which didnt produce much but Koro was very happy with the Bluenose he scored for tea.

Rick and Zane sorted the crew out with toasties for lunch and we started getting sorted for the cruise home in very pleasant conditions.

Rick put Pursuit on the rails and he and Zane started to carve up the freight, but not after a great team photo with the spoils of a magic trip.

There is a lot of stuff I will have missed out on but i had put some stuff down whilst fresh, my apologies team. . . but Im sure the other fishos  will be more than happy to add to it.

There were a sheeeeeIT load of photos taken so these pic's within are just the begining. .. . .

I thank Gavin for sorting this trip out . .  awesome mate!!!!!!!!!!!!ClapClapStar

A really BIG thanks to those whom seriously got me sorted for this trip in term of gear etc. . . MUCHO RESPECTOStarStar

To Rick Pollock and his deckie Zane. . . . Wicked fellas. .  a great team to go fishing with!!!!!!!!!!!!StarStarStarStar

Indeed a busy two days winding on kings, mozz was not pleased that the lemon tagged a bigger fish than him

Of2fish I do hope you get the chance to see my video someday so you can see the way your gear was "used"

Big ups to greg who got the biggest fish of 35kg using a torium20 loaded with 50lb braid I think, did he ever get a thrashing and I like rick, would not have taken any bets on the outcome when he first hooked upThumbs%20Up

We stayed well within the white Island limit of 1 king perday and still had an armfull of fish to take home or in my case send to bonfire Bob

I managed a nice legal well legal king on my super soft bait rubber but found the jigging hard work and mostly unproductive. No way was I going to share my 1 little bluenose of about 5lb as after three drops in 300m+ of water I recon that was "earned" after winding over a kilometer of line attached to a 32oz bomb

Come to think of it; little did you know, the highlight of your trip is that you most likely did not watch and will never have to watch, the All Black 1/4 final match of WC 2007 !

How I wish I had slept through it, had someone tell me and left it at that.

I think from what I remember it was a torium 20 but was spooled with 37kg and took a live jack mack, with rod being a nice jigging stick of good brand. No harness but I think a gimble maybe. Nice effort by greg it was on that 35kg beast, the fish was in great nick and solid all the way through. A little bit lucky but if your going to get a fish like that you need some luck on your side. That beast was throwing him around the boat literally. He had to muscle is part of the way. Top effort all aroundClap

Top trip lads, I enjoyed every part of it.Clap Except that dam bronzey I hooked in the pec fin and had to haul up upside downShocked.

Learned a bit about jigging and got a 60lber on the jig which I had to fight without the use of gimble as it blew out the cross section on the bottom of my new beastmasterOuch. dam fish half blew my arm out too.

Everyone had top efforts all around, gav with his old school rod (including at one stage anchoring the boat with it- nice knots there gav), Pete and greg muscling in big fish without harnesses, keenas for carving that fish with more than normal sunset drag, boulder on hauling that blue nose from a million miles of line, ratty showing his style continually pulling kings and mozz for making the lemon look good plus his work on weeding out the bucketmouths. Was alos great to see that we took pretty much bang on what was going to be eaten. We could have taken more the 1 fish per day situation but my best feeling watching those powerful beasts head off back to the reef to get bigger or a few more years time.Wink

Awesome report Drew, you have captured the experience well, and given our fellow fisho's a taste of what we experienced at 'White'. Wink

Yes... my Torium was put to the limit but she held up well. Whereas my body took more of a beating I reckon! But would I trade in the hurt for the experience to land a 35kg King.... NO F#$king WAY. Big%20smile Big%20smile Big%20smile

That king swallowed the livie with gusto, and then tried to get out of Dodge quick smart. Drag set to 'stop the f#$ker' and hold on. The fight didn't seem long to me, but through words of encouragement from Rick regarding my wife's immenient birthing condition I found the strength to haul the monster aboard. Wink

Shout out to Gav again for organising this, top effort bro.

....it's gotta be said.

Thanks to;

"Keenas" for this awesome report

"the dog" for loaning me his duel, jigs, rods, ...etc

"the drivers" for getting us down there and back safely

"BV" for organising this bruising socket-ripper of a mish

"Mozz" for being the sober driver and fetching the beerz in Whakatane pre-mish

"Ratty" for caning the bait fish when we were all spent and knackered from the washing maching ride to White.  No bait fish....no steam trains.

"Boulder" for letting me enjoy a drift with 80W.

Pursuit Crew:
"Rick" for your hospitality, lack of rules, encouraging humour and wisdom
"Zane" for being an awesomely proactive deckie

and last but not least....
"Tangaroa" for giving us the opportunity to retrieve, keep and/or release his grunty staunch KINGS which stretched our arms, ripped our bone from cartilage and bruise our knees, feeding blood to all the right places.

this thread just keeps on trucking and is getting betterer and betterer.......you just know that each and everyone of those dudes aboard Pursuit shared an awesome and genuine experience.

I've never fished with Rick and his team (something on the must do list) but something really stands out in Rick's own and his clients reports and it goes a little something like this:

"it's not for the kumara to say how sweet it is! those rights are best left for the eater"

churrrrrr

Hey just a question guys.

Did the livies get more attention than the jigs? And did the livies account for the bigger fish?

Cheers.

Sunday could/would have been epic if we had a buch of livies in the tank. Greg and i both hooked into good fish on livies . .  i got totally smoked by mine but you've seen the pics of Gregs 35kg job. . . .

The livies we were using were bigger than what Rick prefers to use.

well done guys sort of trip dreams are made of.......

Rick is an amazing Skipper and fisho alright, a guy that just never stops loving what he is doing.......

all you need now is a trip when the Yellow Skins start runnng or the Stick faces start to apear, or board a trip when hes up at the Kings, 10mths full on he just never stops........

and in his spare time he is fighting for our rights to catch a fish or persever a area from those com guys.......

Hes the man alright, got to be the best skipper afloat in my eyes.........
