Hey you , I definitely saw a marlin bill in the Omaha area yesterday.
It was in my freezer while I was restocking my salt ice supply.

The problem with those winter billfish is that you just need the appearance of one boogeyman, and they take off!

At the Whangaroa Club in early September, there was talk of a report by a commercial of having seen a marlin (rumoured as a Blue perhaps) in the area outside Cavalli's.
( <shrug> just talk? )

Spoken of at the club, fact.
Rumour? Certainly, that's what I said.

well what ever got said with the water temps now nice and holding bait fish i dont count it out,
just a matter of time before something tangable happens weather it be a capture on the scales or a mailto:t@g - t@g with a pic.
sure the best time is mid January onwards with the 1st taken mid December.....and of course the marlin leave in March/April..... opps that did not happen this year so there goes that theory.
no doubt will be a boat going wide for puka as they tow lures there and back

If you catch one at this time of the year better put the pick into it... else Bender won't believe you!
Suggest you also give it time to defrost properly and soak in the briny for a few hours so that it looks wetish again before you take in to the wharf. Where no doubt there will be some grumpy old buggers nosing around and complaining at your lack of boat handling skills, in my day I could reverse spin a 50 footer into that gap with a 50kn easterly blowing;)

Book?
You accuse me of thinking too small. It's going to be called the "Bender Encyclopedia Of Billfishing and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Winter Marlin Fishing and Keeping Away the Boogeyman."
Bottle of rum to anyone who catches a marlin this side of Christmas Day - excluding charter boats going 200 miles offshore.

I do like to do an early season mission or 2 but not October! We picked up the first marlin for the west coast 2 years ago on the 11 January with several more taken shortly after that. The east had beaten us by a couple of weeks from memory. I think Adam Scott had the best advice on early season's. It is better to fish longer into April and May than put all your gas and time in December and January. That said, I'm pretty keen for a pre-Xmas explore of some new territory. Cheers DA

Go hard Ski, you just never know, i don't care if these stories are true or not, all it means is there is even less time till the "proper" game fishing season, the build up is starting! As long as it doesn't fall flat on its face like.....
Anyway a bottle of rum from Bender sounds well worth the little bit of effort, especially if your already going that way

Apparently they where on the nine pin trench a month or two ago fishin for bottom dwellers. Started lifting and a marlin ate the dropper just before the boat, with a mullet head on it. I herd they had em on for 45 mins thrashing 20 metres from the boat and all, hmm the one that got away broke off.
