This was jigged by my mate Kil Song from the US. Kil is a regular jigger aboard the Cascade to the 3 Kings. This fish was one of two that he caught, the other was released.
Now we know that the ultimate sportfish eats metal!

"have been looking for catching swordfish on jigs and I finally could land not one, but two on jigs on a single trip last week.
One was about 58 inches (lower jaw to curved fork lengh) and the other one was about 54 inches which was released. I used 7' custom St Croix rod/Saltiga 50 filled with YGK Ultra Jigman PE8 for 58incher and 8' custom Japanese Cosmotech rod/Accurate 665 two-speed filled with Power Hunter PE8 for 54 incher. 200 g Yozuri's Metallic Sardine and 220g Sevensea's Hooker jigs were used."  was gunna say - JM350 + Saltist 30T but nah!

I'm not sure exactly the hooks Kil was using but he normally uses treble hooks on those particular jigs. Those jigs are designed for Tuna but effective on nearly everything. ------------- give it death! |

that is an awesome feat by no stretch of the imagination......you'd have to be fairly confident that the buggars where in good numbers before contemplating jigging as a legit method to target swords.....do you know if it was foul hooked Chris? I was under the impression that swords are "slash and retrieve" feeders, opting to "stun" their meals before eating them.... awesome!! |

No idea BF but Kil specialises in Tuna jigging off the East Coast of USA and I think this was a lucky by catch - 2 in one evening. Where they jig is not usually the depths we associate with Broadies here in NZ. Kil was using 200-220g jigs so I would guess a depth less than 100m. ------------- give it death! |

have a look in the jigs thread couple of pages back it has some pics in it of the hooker jig not sure of the weight though maybe a cuttlefish would be a good choice with its fluttery action? ------------- Dont get huge get massive |

Chris, stop being so coy! :-) Post up the pics you feel would be appropriate. Ain't nobody gonna complain pal, you know that! Let's face it, jigging is basically a method of fishing that you have made your own in NZ with the amount of time, money and effort you have put into it. So feel free to post up any and all pics, tips and advice as you like mate, and that, my friend, is my official position as a moderator! This is the jig that did the damage -average looking short jig. Reminds me of the old Stingsidas, I got a few that size, now just gotta find them.
BTW, Yozuri have stopped making these Metallic Sardines years ago but I got some modern equivalents in my sights.
 Kil likes treble hooks for TUNA and I'm sure those Broadies were hooked when night jigging for YFT or BFY off the east coast of the US. There have been more Broadies jigged very recently in the same area.

HA ha ha.... a prime lesson in NOT looking over the side when you bring your squid to the boat. You take a good squizz over the side to have a look, and them buggers will ping ya in the face every time! hehehehehe... man, I have seen that soooo often :-) Great way to trap "new chums" to squid fishing too..."Hey!
