Hi Guys,

Just a question on rigging smaller jigs (both knife and other styles at 60gm and under)  As these are usually less than 10-12 cm would you still run with an assist hook from the top or just use a single hook on a split ring on the bottom?  (I will replace all the crappy trebles that come standard as they look like an undersized snapper wouldn't stuyggle to straighten them)

I hope the answer to this is "yes run assists" because I've bought a whole bunch to replace the trebles on my jigs.

Sorry Bendy one, but personally I like a single hook on the bottom of the smaller, conventional jigs..... but hey, let us know if you think the assists on small jigs helps....
cheers, Stu.

assists work no problems on the "smaller" say sub 100gram jigs.....changed all of mine over to the assist format without hook-up issues....in fact hooking up on bottom/reef appear to be a thing on the past.....the only jigs I have with singles at the bottom are thereally small 12gram buggars that I use for koheru extraction.

Kezz is right on the money - assist hooks don't snag so easily. Also the placement of the assist hook is right in the target area for a baitfish.

RA, I found my split-ring pliers a couple of days ago. They were in the car, of all places... bring your jigs with you tomorrow if you swing by.

this idea of assist hook was all new to me when i first saw them, really couldn't see them working to well in our conditions and NZ species.....

so i changed some of them back to the way i had always fished...
that is with a split ring and swivel then the single hook always on the heavy end, it didnt work to well at all, so i sort of blamed the new shapes for the fact they didnt work......

then Chris asked me if i would take out a couple of guys from Singapore like these guys were top notch at jigging fish....

now they used Zest jigs the way they come, straight from the packet, hahaha i thought, no way will you keep up with me.....
but they had no problem and i was soon using the same set-up......

and now except for the very small lethals like 30s and 60s i rig everything like they do with a Zest set-up......

in fact if your worried about it put one on both ends.... ive done that and found the top will still out fish the bottom hook.....

the one thing i did find i lost a couple of nice fish and the jig when ive tied the line to the split ring, the reason i think was it got cut on the edge were its sliced to finish off the ring....
so now i sometimes add a swivel or a solid ring or tie the line direct to the wire protruding out, same end which has the hook attached.....

so have a go at what ever set-up you think will work and lets here back on how you slaughtered them.....
