If you had all options available on a particular day - what would be your ideal/preferred live or dead Snapper baits (not Soft Baits)?
Pilchards
Piper
Squid
Crayfish
Anchovy
Koheru
Mackerel
Kahawai
?

the buggars can't help themselves...but not only snapper....I'd say nearly every predatory fish that swims likes a bit of ink in their eyez.

There were 3 or was it 4 fishermen sitting in a boat at Pakiri. One
spotted a squid swiming around the boat. Another caught this squid and
was kind enough to pass it to the 3rd angler.
The party of intrepid anglers made a quick move to another spot and the
angler with the fresh live squid straylined in down. Within 2 minutes
this was the result

One 20 pound snapper
Then there was a party of five at the barrier one time. The ugliest of
the five put a live Squid in the water and 30 seconds later became
connected to and landed this

nice one Pig....but then on the very next bait (another Squid) or perhaps it was the one before that kingi (memory slightly hazy from that morning you understand) and before you monkeys could get a firm grasp Operation Squid Inc. I expertly snaffled one of the other live squid, cast it out and booooyaaa.....no more than 10seconds soak time!

Isn't it funny how perceptions of one event differ between people? I seem to recall that, once relocated, one of the party dived headlong across the boat whilst manhandling the others out of the way with his lashing elbows and kicking feet, grabbing the squid and shouting "f off that's mine," before retiring to the corner, snarling and pawing the deck while he baited up..."
He then stuck the rod in the rod holder and turned, adopting a fearsome pose, lest anyone make an attempt to touch said fishing rod when it inevitably bent double.
But that's just how I recall the occasion.

Although some of those livebaits are the best, my opinion has cooked mussells as the best "other" bait.
It's a cheap option and good to eat between snapper. Another bonus is that sharks "usually" leave it alone.

Those pictures look tasty to me, reckon I'd be stashing one of those away for me let alone the Snapper! So what would be the ultimate Soft Bait imitation of said Squid.....since a big juicy Squid seems to be the bait consensus...same colour as posted above? Bit of glow in the dark material...but what about action and size she asked!?
The action of squid baits I have seen in the market is rather stiff, hard and un-squid like. I'm thinking of stretchier, softer, lighter weight, flexible squid...how about the size, or sizes? A 5 or 6inch would be the go for general Snapper I guess, and then a big 9 inch for enticing the moochers?? A couple of eyes, dangly tentacles, soft enough to use worm hooks/jig heads (especially on the 5-6inch job). Keen to see if it can be done for catching Snapper specifically.
What do you reckon?

Grant,
Some of these http://www.rnrmarinesupply.com/luresTrollingSoft.htm - suckers (pink/shrimp, rootbeer or pink flake) in 9" might be a starting point for some research....although a "trolling" skirt more or less, I am sure with a bit o' #8 wire technology and a bit of lead in the design you'd be able to fashion up a pretty convincing squid imitation "sift bait".....also work very well with a film canister (what are those?) slipped down over the head on the mantel and towed around in the warm blue stuff.
I've got a few of the 12" varities kicking about the place....Gurocks in Avondale are Yo Zuri stockists
Steve Badman ( http://www.outdoorcart.com/demon/arrowsquid.htm - Demon Lures ) does and awesome imitation as well.....pre-rigged....have only tried the hard body version used as a "jig" and it works really well....

I tried the jiggs myself and didn't have much luck, so I now use a 4/0 hook slid through the eye of a tripple with a flashing light and with a small amount of kahawai tied on the 4/0. Use a 1/4 once ball sinker and cast out, as soon as it hits the water stop the line and let it drift down and back toward you. You'll hook up just about every time. Don't reel in too fast. They can be quite tricky. make sure you wear gloves and long sleeves when you grab them and watch for the squrt

Stefan - a tripple hook like you have on a kahawai lure and a light as below - I use a green/yellow for Squid. They have 2 electrodes that stick out the back and the current is complete when immersed in water. dry them off and they stop flashing.

G'day fella's. First post here.
For us Aussies, small calamari(squid) first, then piper(we call them garfish), then Kahawai strip fillets(We call them Australian Salmon) and lastly the humble pilchard. Although most fresh baits such as barracouta, yellowtail scad and mullet also work.
Whilst in Wellington last week(I'm from Melbourne but travel for work a little), I purchased a dvd called "How to catch snapper" made by the Fishing Show. It's not in production anymore, but I was able to get my hands on one. Looks like you kiwi's have a trick or two up your sleeve and I was quite impressed and intrigued by the different techniques and methods you guys use to catch snapper.
Also noticed you guys are starting to use Berkley soft plastics(soft baits). These have been a craze down under for quite a few years. One thing I will be trying this year is snapper snatches. Not very popular at all over here, but these are gaining popularity.
PS. Snapper are Victoria's favourite fish and during the months of October and November(that's when the snapper come into our bay to spawn), RED fever hits our town and we go absolutely mental!!!
Not long to go now. I'm pumped...

I get those lights from hunting and fishing and yes they come as you see them in the picture, minus the trace and hook. On the packet they say to put them on your main line between your traces (as in a ledger) however when I first used them I was getting a lot of bites and no hook ups as the fish were attacking the light. Now I put them down on the hook and have a much better result. I use them for snapper as well. Gurnard like the pink ones.
