Well I hear the fishing on rotorua is pretty good at the moment
Yoti / Rod holder / bearfoot any details you can share. With opening
just a month away and the trout caught around the ohau channel spewing
at smelt opening day could be a cracker at the channel
How have you guys been getting on and where should people be heading -
you might have the best of the Nth island fishing right there at the
moment
Yoti - did anything happen at rotoiti this year or did it stay quite for you?

I have first hand report from pagrus catching 2 x 3-4lbers in their first hour at Rotoiti. Very nice of him to call me immediately, while I was working at the office. Congratulations to Mrs Pagrus on catching her first . Apparently it was "assisted" by a baby stroller but I'll let pagrus share the details if he reads this.

herring. several large browns ,up to 12lb have been taken around the channel mouth last week, but most have found the wind a killer, gusting at 60kph not for the average fisho. The guides report the rainbows off ngongotaha are fat as butter and average around 5lb. fly fishing has been hard at rotoiti and oki but the odd fish is still being caught. I have been catching snapper and tarakihi out in the BOP and not wasting my time with mud fish!.

MUD FISH ???
WHERE DO YOU GET OFF !!!
DONT GET ME WRONG RODDHOLDER,AS IM A KEEN SAILTY AS WELL,BUT WHEN YOU DO THE HOURS ON THE LAKE AN SEE THE [CHARTOS CATCHIN FISH ]WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ONE ONE THE WEEKEND .NICE FISH AN TOOK A WHILE TO BRING IN ON LIGHT TACKEL.AND EVERYTHING ELSE OF SMALLER SIZE,ALL CHARTER BOAT SKIPPERS SAY THERE GETTING BIG FISH AT THE TIME TO GET AND INCOURARGE MORE PUNTERS,LIKE THE GUY IN THE BOP FRIDAY FISHING REPORTS,HE GETS HIS INFO FROM LOCAL CHARTER SHIPPERS [READ BETWEEN THE LINES MATE ] THEY ARE ALL CATCHING GOOD FISH WHEN THE WEATHERS RIGHT
EXEMPLE >>>>I KNOW ONE CHARTER BOAT SAYS HIS CATCH RATE IS 3.5 FISH PER HOUR ON ROTORUA AND ANOTHER ON ROTITI IS ONE FISH PER 2.5 HOURS,OVER ALL I TEND TO BELEVE THE GUY ON ROTITI
DONT GET ME WRONG BUT THESE GUYS TEND TO HYPIT UP FOR THERE CUSTOMERS AND THERE OWN POCKETS,AFTER ALL ITS THERE LIVING /AND WHAT A WAY TO MAKE A LIVING [ GETTING PAYED FOR SOMTHING YOU LOVE TO DO }AS IVE SAID NO DISRESPECT INTENDED

As i know the guides personally they may tell me a different story. But i have always reported it as i see it. If you dont take my word then get stuffed!. I have always shared my info with anglers of all types from learners to "experts". I posted reports all summer as to the fishing in the whole rotorua area as i was on the lakes 3-4 days a week. Winter fishing this year has been crap, as i predicted. Lake rotorua is the best fishing lake in the world bar none, and i bet any amount of money i could go on the lake and catch fish, in any conditions. One fishing guide i know gaurantees a fish so he must know what hes doing. if he says use a black toby at holdens bay i believe him. However that may sound like bs to you. thats your choice but dont ever say i mislead anglers on this site as i have been given heaps of grief for giving away too much info by some locals. All the guides i know are only too happy to share info as there is plenty of fish in rotorua to go around. The fishing shops all provide good info to all who ask and will show you how to set up gear etc. Alf from stormy seas caught a big brown last week (12lb) and released it, near the chanel mouth. Three of us caught 62 fish in 5.5hrs jigging on rotoiti in may. work out the catch rate of that. Or you may think i'm bs as well.

barefoot, a guy called Mike Cotter writes the Daily post fishing reports. He owns and operates O'keefes fishing shop. He gets reports from all sorts of people that come into the shop and from guides. He puts a lot of effort into this and he too would be pissed off to read your post. Spending a lot of time on the lake dosn't mean you become a better fisherman . If it did we would all be "experts".

the channel ,airport and nongataha all projuced fish for us,my fellow fisherman losing a good double figure fish at the boat of the channel !!
all fish where taken on black mongrel fly fished behind either a rastifarin or trafic light in most of the time 2 meters or less of water, most had smelt in them but one was full of small snails, things are lookin good for the mounths ahead,

bearfoot, try fishing your fly in front of your lure. by hanging it off the lure hook you can stop the lure from performing its wobble effect. put a small swivel about 2m up your line from the end and slip the fly on your main line . it will pull down to the swivel and it will track there due to the force of the water. last week most of the fish i caught took the fly, a blood red rabbit. try mrs simpson, grey ghost, parsons, hamills killer, green orbit for a change. also try doing circle loops over drop=off from 2-5m of water around channel area. the fish tend to feed just on the edge or in the deeper water.

thanks PETE.
i will try youre version on one rod an see what happens ?
and yes i did noyice the fish were right on the edge of the weed or drop offs ,bit of a pain as you tend to snag more often.i try to use the gps plots ive put in ( as a guide } to help with this problem, saves a bit of time.
on the weekend as you know a lot of the fish where surfacing , so given the set of surcumstances ?? we saw what depth of lead line would you run ?? i run a straight fly for a while on mono just to see if it might work ,but to no availe
cheers MIKE

i dont use lead line. i run a deep water xpress in front of an L.E.D. line this gives a depth of about 2m with 30m of line out. and 5m with it all out. the deep water xpress ensures the lure runs nose down in the water and gives a better action at a slightly faster than normal trolling speed. the L.E.D. is much more sensative than lead and gives the fish more feel on a lighter rod than you can use with lead. i use at least 8=10m of trace nylon. dont use flourocarbon as the lure wears it away in very short time and you will break of most times. even though the fish splash on top they quickly go back to 3 to 5m deep and so you wont catch many on top. i use a figure eight track over the drop offs going from 2m to 5m and back with the lure often turning. you get a lot of takes when the lure turns.

Rod holder - you just used up all my good advice
Gotta keep that boat turning - changing the depths and speed of the lures
I only use deep water express onto backing, which is than marked so I know what depth I have achieved eg 15 / 20 or 25ft depth
I learnt that those fish you can see splashing are not the ones you are trying to catch. Best to keep just off the bottom.
Also good advise on the fly infront of the lure - mind you running 2 kiwi lures gives quite a bit of movement to both lures.
Hadnt heard of any rule changes but I think lead is banned from lake Rotorua??

Posted By: roddholder

lead is legal in all lakes except waikaremoana. there is no weight restriction. you can use wire, downrigger etc. never tried two tassies. but when fishing is hard i go back to one lure or fly. you can spoil the fish for choice it seems. the black toby (turbo) is one lure i run on its own, the fly seems to change the action and it fishes better solo. i never use teasers on my lures either, if the lure is the right colour it shouldnt need one.

At last managed to get fishing again has been sometime. Two of us spent thursday afternoon and friday on Lake Rotoiti. Overnighted on the boat..very wet and foggy the thursday afternoon one fish for the afternoon. An interesting sight just on dark of a midge hatch the air was full of them and sounds as well like millions of mossies, the surface of the lake was covered in empty pupa cases in the morning. Friday weather improved one fish in mid morning four later in the day . All trolling lead line in 18 to 20 metres water on tazzie devils, light or dark purple , and clown. Fish very spread out its a matter of finding them. 5 feeding on smelt and 1 full of kura all very good conditioned fish one poorer forgot to weight the fish before cleaning weighed one cleaned and no head 3 lb. Herring.. winter fishing for me would be the slowest season I have had for awhile didnt spend the hours I have in the past either, the fish i did get were well worth the effort

yoti, i have to say you have done better than most goys so faf this season on rotoiti. fishing has been real slow to put it mildly.
the fish however are in super condition, best early season condition ive seen but fish numbers are well down.
the smelt are not there yet so when they happen is anyones guess. ihave changed my jigging patterns to large rabbit flys, green and orange doing the trick but no great numbers, a couple of fish per trip.
on opening day we caught a fish with obvious net marks on it, flounder net size. reported it to F&G and i hear they got a guy netting the ohau channel. keep your eyes open for ANY suspicious activity and report any to 0800poacher. the wind has been a real bugger and the forcast is not good for a change. never mind, oh dear, how sad.
things only get worse , england have just beaten france, never mind i'll just have to go fishing to take my mind off it!!!!!!!

fished rotoiti yesterday one fish for 4 hours on the water, tryed again this morning zilch !
i desided to go over to rotorua for the res of the day, fished hammerana through to just short of the airport ,five fish 2 - 5 lb all were taken on purple and black lures, there were heaps of boats out today and i saw most of them hooked up at somestage ,my luck stopped after losing the last purple and black lure on a[ locomotive ] of the ohau channel !!! man could that fish move ,i had it on for 5 mins before busting me off, never broke the surface but stayed out 50 mtrs and just went like a kingfish
tryed the pink lady but no takers
all an all another good day on the lake !!!
gona go back to good old nylon like you RODHOLDER any particular brand you favor or colour ??

sounds about right for rotorua bearfoot, still the worlds best trout lake. do you have the right "pink lady". it is purple with a black skellaton. dont know why its called pink but the maker sure got it right when it comes to fooling trout. i only use clear nylon, i have found the green or blue is too visable to trout. also i look for a soft non shiny nylon. platapus is my choice and is available in bulk spools. i wind a 100m onto an empty spool and keep the main spool away from light. i store it in a cupboard in the spare room. last bit of advice when using flurocarbon dont pull the knots up real tight. this causes failure, i tease the knot up with a small amount of pressure and find i get very few breaks. re-tie the knot after each fish is best.

Fished Rotoiti Saturday and Sunday.. put in some long hours came home with seven fish..caught 6 caught trolling and 1 jigging..had our chances of more but had some gear failures this time broke one off another cut the line on a hook barb when it jumped put one recovering fish back and 1 undersize. Caught on dark purple and light purple kiwi lures and smelt flies . most had been feeding on kura and some smelt..the fish were right on the bottom if our gear wasnt touching bottom every now and then we got no bites.

Hi Bearfoot I will have to go look for some kura flies I havnt seen them yet and I guess they should work . the fish we got last weekend had been feasting on kura some as big as your thumb, one had also eaten several small stones a little larger than marble size, same colour as a kura ..wonder if jigging a small stone would work . good to hear you got onto some fish in Lake Rotorua cheers....

Hi there, new to this forum and pretty green at fishing. Looking for a few tips and a bit of advise if you can help?
Have been out the last two nights on Rotorua and bought nothing home.
Both nights fished from around 6 until dark. Have trolled black Toby, traffic light, purple, clown, a red and white spotted type tassie devil, one with a copper coloured bottom with white and black top, and a copper toby.
Have been running a fly two metres up the trace.
Have been trolling leadlines with 3 to 4 colours out at the pins and ohau channel and two colours out from the ngongotaha stream.
Is there something I should be doing differently or is the fishing slow at the moment? Cheers Wilago.

wilago welcome to the forum. all i can say is you are using all the right things but you may need to refine them a little. 1. speed is important. you need to be between 3-6kph. however every boat has its optimum speed so experiment, till you get it right. 2. depth of lure. as you adjust your speed so your lure will rise and fall as well as the amount of line you have out. 3. find your fish. this is where a good depthsounder is vital. fish the littorals. (the drop-off between shallow and deep water). fish cruise these areas looking for food. most of lake rotorua has a drop-off at 3-5m find this and use a zig-zag pattern along the littoral. 4. fish the weed beds in the evening light. use a very long trace 10-15m and one colour of lead. check your line regularly to make sure youre weed free. 5 talk to the locals. watch what the boats around you are doing. look out for the fishing guides, the are experts. if you can afford it book a trip with one and learn from that. 6. go into the local fishing shops and seek help there. private message me if you want. i'll help if i can. good luck and remember even the experts have the off days. the full moon is not a great help either so be patient. as rachael hunter says it may not happen overnight but it will happen.

Only chance I had to get out on the weekend was early evening Saturday. Fished the Pins and back towards Hamaurana. Got 4 fish in just over an hour and a half, the best a 5 pound Brown. 2 on the dark purple lure with black stripes on top and the other two on the pink with black stripes on the top.
Thanks again.

Hi Bearfoot. Yeah we had lines in the water at 6:00, had hoped to get out earlier but it turned out pretty well, was certainly good to have fish in the fin after 3 trips without a thing to bring home!
My reading at the pins showed the temp down to 17 by then at the pins. I have a hand held VHF, must get round to sitting my license for it.
Not sure that I'll be out on Saturday, the forecast isnt looking great. Cheers

Hi Guys Well its been a bit of a fish drought about here been busy doing the seasonal work thing.. havn't been near the fresh water for weeks but have managed a couple of night trips on the Tauranga harbour.. brought home a few nice snapper each time. With the weather the way it has been for the last week or so it hasnt been that great time for me to be fishing anyway. This time of year my thoughts are that the night fishing on Lake Rotorua around Awahou stream area should be producing a few fish. good luck for the holiday season the fish are where you find them

Hi all,
got out last night for a quick troll around Rotorua. Got one at the pins about 6:30 on a fly (not sure what its called). There wern't many fish on the sounder so shot down to the Awahau for a look, nothing much there either so carried onto the Waiteti, few more there and lost one on the weedbeds which took the dark purple cobra. Had to call it a night then. Have a good christmas, tight lines. Cheers Wilago

okatina was quiet fished for three hours 4 one fish which took the trafic light, it was the first time that ive been there ,being unfamiliar with it and its spots ,never the less NICE LAKE.
WE whent back to rotorua for the remander of the day picking up another four fish ,all taken on the trafic light, not even a touch on my old fathfull purple and black ??
we fished from hammer to ohau, but most of the action was arround the pins around the drop offs,
there where a lot of boats fishing this side of gisborn pt at rotoiti on the way throu to okatina we should have stopped there ,given the wind conditions as it was not the best at rotorua with a varable half meter chop [suprised to get any fish ]normaly i have not had much luck at all in the chop on prev trips !!
How have the rest of you guys been doing ???

back from rotoma !!!
actualy got back last thursday, spent the honeymoon down there for nine days ,
no tigers to be caught again !!
up at 5 every morning [ much to the disgust of my newly wed] lol
the fishing was excellent to say the least ,the flys for harling at the momment are green ,rabits, orbits and any variation even yellow seams to be working as well, early morning up 9 oclock and 4.30 in the evening onwards, the south easter side being the most productive at the moment, all the fish apart from one slab jack were in good condition, being full of smelt and orange as salmon !!!
jiging on the lake is quite poroductive as well with some double figer fish caught of late bye a couple of the locals,
a three hook setup ,with smelt flys, going from green at the bottom and silver at the top,
we stopped of at rotoiti for the night ,but only had a quick fish of the wall [ nothing ] but it had died of at rotoma 2-3 days before hand with the full moon so i wasnt that dissapointed,
speaking to one of the local guides there at the ramp ,he said the fising had been great there that week ,he took a party of japanes out and they thought they were actualy catching salmon ,because of the size of them,
well back to work and reality for me now,BUGGER !!!!
cant wait to get back on rotorua,as it is still my favorite place of fishing !
just got to start stackin the browine point back up ,so i can make it happen asap
cheers guys,
whots happening out there ???

Nice fish there rodholder. What part of rotoiti was it caught? pic looks a bit like Ruato. Iev found the fishing very slow off Ruato, need some big rain and a drop in temp. Did you fish in the rotorua police fishing comp recently?

Spent yesterday and today fishing Lake Rotoiti Good weather and caught some good fish. Seemed hard going but ended up with 7 fish between two of us. best one 2.81 Kg. fish caught trolling and jigging

yep, fished the police comp.3 anglers on boat got 72 fish for the 3 days, all jigging. only used one fly, the n0.10 pat swift epoxy jack sprat . got some nice fish up to 3.4kg but just outside the prizes. the lake temp is still 19.6deg so no sign of spawning runs. lots of wild fish but a few of the better fish were hatchery fish. had that photo fish in the freezer, i should have sneaked it into the weigh-in. lol. a few too many cops around though!!!!!! .

Yeah I was lucky and didnt have to get mine from the freezer! I caught the 4.2kg that won the tournament. Only fished half days on rotoiti then moved to okataina for the arvo, man oaks is fishing well! We averaged 25 fish an arvo, lots of 2.7kg fish, 3.5kg the best, that fish also got me 3rd place. Size 8 ginger mick doing the damage.

nice to see [hear ] from you yoti !!
havent been out a lot myself of late,
a couple of times on rotorua ,the usual haunts, hammer to the ohau ,
fish size is down but sill heaps there !!!
silver smelt [ tazie ] was the go >>>>> purple and black not so good or trafic light.but parsons \ glory fly in yellow seamed to be more productive at a slower speed especialy around the ohau channel in 20 to 26 feet. the pins are still workin well as well !!!
9 till 3 seams to be the time the lake temp has dropped as well, and the fish are rowing up.
have been told the clowns are workin well but i still stick with the old favorites
might throw one out next time and see what happens ??
silver clown with the smelt i presume buy youre words might be the go ?

rotorua again last weekend ,
white clown with red an black spots worked well, straight silver tasi did better, trafic light also working ,just about anything i threw out caught fish, the only exception was a black and gold toby ,did even get a hit on it [ most unusual ] fished as above wiht the pins doing better 6 fish 3 kept,
the condition factor was 50/50 being slab and good,
water temp was 13 to 14.5 c with most of the fish being in the 15 - 20 foot mark
i put a tag in to fish and game the other week
the results equated to !!!
released august 2006 at 200MM in lenght
captured may 2008 510 mm and 1.6 kg 450 grams of that weight was its row [ egg ]
thats all for now fellas tight lines and good luck on youre next trip

the ohau ch was quiet with most of the fish being caught around the pins
there was a few boats workin the marie by the airport, speaking to on of them later in the day he said he had been not so lucky as myself, he was catching a lot of small fish and hadnt kept any

Here's one for you then barefoot...
My brother and his mate hit "The Pipe" on Rotoiti last Saturday evening and caught nought. Watched other anglers take three tho. Reckons the trout need rain as much as we do before they'll do anything really major.

Calm down Bearfoot.
That is par for the course on forums and as long as a thread get hits it shouldn't be considered dead. The number of people on here that fish that Rotorua region are limited and I'm certain the majority post about it and share what they can but forums always have a lot of lurkers who read and don't post. Your reports provide something valuable to those people. There are a number of forums where we'd like to see better incvolvement, freshwater being one, but keeping things peaceful, not shouting is a better way to go.
I don't even fish that area and look forward to reading your reports and I'm sure other do too...
keep up the great work mate!

Hi Barefoot,
I see you never had a look at Rotoiti the other week.
Well I managed a 3.4kg and 4 smaller around the 2 - 2.5kg mark, on the Sunday of long weekend.
I witnessed a 10ld jack in the bag and the same guy during the previous week had caught 2 fish at 11lbs.
Allso a 5.1kg has been caught and another angler had caught one at 10lbs.
A mate went out 2 nights ago and caught nothing.
Im on the lake at least once a week at the moment.
Will be there next week for 3 days, doing what Im very passionate about!!
I will tell all, when Im back.
Hope this helps???
Whats knowledge,if its not shared??
Look forward to your reports.

Hi bearfoot,
I've only been down twice this year in the last couple of weeks and have reported that in another thread.
I don't get down from Tga very often for a fish so your reports along with others are valuable for me to get a handle on whats going on down there.
much appreciated and keep up the good work.

I have been on Rotoiti half a dozen time this year for 1 trout. Todays trip produced a slightly better result and included an 11 pound hen. All taken jigging (70 feet) and all hooked on the same small brown fly.

MATE!!!!Nice fish.
My brother in law fished Ruato Bay on Monday night for a 9.5lb, an 8lber and a smaller 6lber. He was happy and I was jealous.
Here's his proof...
Given what Farmer brown displayed above also it would seem Rotoiti is doing just fine at the moment.

As mentioned,I was going to give a run down of my 3 days over on Rotoiti.
Well like I said and advised in previous posts its been happening for a little while now.
Looking at the pics,tells all.
Excellent fish guys(FarmerBrowne,Kiwifisher1)
Monday night, I had 7 touches for no hookups, over a 2 hour period.I even trimmed down the tails to next to nothing.
I was out Tuesday and witness a couple of 8lbers,9lber and a couple arond 6lbs.Allso noted that the odd fish was looking like a bike tube!!
Myself I didnt do to well that night, but redeemed myself on Wednesday landing a 8lber.
Spooke to Matt from Fish & Game,he commented that the average for the season so far is 3.3kg,Okataina 3.2kg.
Mate went out today & hasnt feared as well as what he thought.Another day tomorrow.
You cant beat having your finger on the pulse???
Good luck guys, get out there and do it before its over!!

THANK GUYS,
good to see youre input on this page not mention the size of youre fish !!!!
YOU have restored my faith in this thread
keep the thread going and the ups and downs of fishing a happening
whent to rotorua last week fridad to be exact,
as norm fished the pins to ohau ,the pins still doing well ,water temp down to 12.5 at on stage [no need to keep the beers on ice ]
got bored at one stage and decided to have a play with the fly rod !!
had a floatinng line spool on and decided to throw it out for a laugh with a parsons glory an a green orbit, still only had 9 foot of taperd leader on .let the line out till the backing hit the water, slowed the boat down to 1.4 knot and put [ lent ] the rod over the other seat[as i couldent slip it into a rodholder,
Well magick 2 NICE FISH one after another ,havent had so much fun for a long time,
the floater works well .over the shallows drop off !!!
i might in crease the leader a bit though 15 feet i think ,
but good fun on 9 foot of rod and circlcling the boat to get them in
let you know how i go next time im out
keep them posts comming in

hi guys just to let you know i'm still in the land of the living and still fishing. mostly salt water softbait but the odd fresh trip. went out yesterday to rotoiti and 3 anglers, we got 5 fish in about 4 hours. one went just under 8lb the rest were all maiden fish around 4-5lb and real fat. the jigging is harder now the water temp is 12.5 deg. it didnt fall below 14 deg last year so the frosts are cooling things down. the fish numbers are well down on the sounder to other years, and i think thats because fish & game arn't putting the fish into the lake in the numbers they claim. the fly fishers arnt having much sucess either with only the odd fish being caught.
