Hi All,
I was after some advice on boats. This thread seems to tie in nicely with Finatic's Small boat thread. I was wanting to know if it would be possible to get a good blue water boat for under $30,000.00? If so what type, size etc. I specifically want a trailer boat I can take out wide chasin beakies. And can tow to where the fish are. 30k is the budget, can it be done? I don't need to buy any rods, reels lures etc. That side of things is already covered. Help and thoughts appreciated

Hey, we've got marlin from a 4.9 M Marco, off Raglan, that's easy worth 12K max. Plonker's Ginga is another example.

Bit of a challenge if U want new. If it was me I'd be looking at Stabby craft, Ramco or Mclay. Sorry don't know enough about the fibreglass selection and I'd want a 4 stroke. From what I know about the latest 2 strokes is they are great while they are running but seam to have a lot of "electrical" components that can cause problems as they age.
Happy hunting 1/2 the fun is looking.

BA I have access to a launch,as you know, but could'nt afford berthage, maintenance etc to run my own. Trailer boat better for me at this stage of my life and being able to tow it to where the fish are has it's attractions. Unfortunately the sacrifice is the comfort factor on a trailer boat whilst out there doing it

Hell yes! I would say a good portion of NZ's marlin are caught out of 30k boats. Your balance will be finding a happy compromise between wants and budget. pretty is also more expensive but there are some great older hulls out there. Four strokes are starting to appear on TM as well as people repower. Look carefully at the trailer as more gamefisho's spend a decent amount of time on the road. Good luck. DA

Haines hunter, Morgon Bill fisher would be the better blue water trailer boats by far, what you have to think about Tom is towing capacity of the truck. what about rayglass its not what you know but who can do some asking if you want.

Phantom - IMO 172 Billfisher is not the answer. But if you cld find an older Billfisher 550 - magic..! No probs to tow either! Almost identical to bigger 720 or 635 Billfishers with targa top and full walkaround, self draining cockpit etc. Also as BA says, Rayglass. Older 670's gr8 boats. Blue water hull and fishing orientated and some were made as centre consoles - awesome

PD haven't too many complaints about the smaller Mclays like my 550. Brilliant to tow (as speeding ticket 98kmh from robo ***** in KK proved on the weekend she reckoned the 255kw HSV up my arse was trying to get past me for too long... yeah whatever!).
Easy to handle on your own or with young kids. Only complaint is that the waterline length and weight make the ride a little more uncomfortable than a bigger boat. Motor is just over 400hrs. 80% gamefishing so that tells you that I find it pretty comfortable in the right conditions. If I did it again I would go for a 4stroke 115 on the hull, and if I was keeping it I probably would after another season or two.
I have just bought a 635 billfisher but will end up costing me another 40k over the Mcaly by the time I get her up to scratch.
As I told a bloke on trademe the other day who knows what I would be prepared to accept if I still have it at xmas so let me know if you can still see it then.
Boats have been starting to move out over the past few weeks so expect some progress pretty soon tho.
Salty she is on the yard at KK suzuki dealer from the weekend... a few more eyes to run over her up there.

That's a hell weapon all right but you need a big tow vehicle.
Now I know that they are not fashionable boats on this website but I would definitely look at a Ramco Outsider. They are excellent little boats, available for around 20K and I can tell you from personal experience that
1: They catch marlin
2: They are an excellent sea boat, with a ride that is far better than other tinnies of the same size.

Phantom older ones are called 237's and I think mid '90s the 720 kicked in around '99. Looks nicer, a bit smoother lines but still the same hull I think.
I think you would really struggle to get one for $30k though. The only ones I have seen are $55k or more. There are a couple of 2008 / 635s that I have seen at $50k but nothing much under that. I think you would really struggle to find something that didn't need a re-power, also that wasn't a 2stroke.
The haines and cresta would be good sea boats but again would question whether you are going to get a 4stroke in your price range. I would suggest that you would spend more than the $1 - 2k additional interest in fuel in a seasons gamefishing (which means you get to spend another $20k at 10% interest on the mortgage). I would hate to think what pushing a 20-22ft glassboat for a day gamefishing on a 2 stroke would cost...
My advice with your budget is stay with alloy and as good a motor as you can get. You aren't going to win a lot of friends being towed back from the 500m mark in a 20 footer that has broken down, or worse. If it was me and your boat out there I think it would be a hop on board and see ya later to the boat rather than a 4 hour tow heading into night time and low fuel.
There are plenty of real good 5-6m boats that will feel safe and allow you to get a good new(ish) motor for the money.
My boat is one option. I shouldn't say it but beside it on the yard is an older 96 outsider with a 90hp suzi (near new) on the back for under 30k. The hull and size of the boat isn't up to the Mclay but still a good motor and a sound boat for the money.
If you are going wide the money you have should go on quality rather than quantity with quality electronics as well. Anyway thats my two cents others may differ...

Finatic that Seawswirl is certainly setup for the job at hand. Some new electronics, take some mates out to pay the fuel bill and you are onto a real blue water, solid boat. I would defintiely put it on your inspect list.

Top advice El Robbo - given price range, a late model motor and best technology probably more important than hull.

Make sure you have lots of mates.... there are mates and then there are mates who are willing to shell out 300 hundy for a days fuel. Reckon you would have to be going through the 200L a day in that haines or Seaswirl.

Yep good boats. Buy the best quality boat within the price range. Not much point having a boat that costs you a fortune to own, fuel, maintenance, .... spend the money on the water not off it. Also don't forget that cost of money is only 11% on top of your mortgage... or a thousand a year for 10k which will make big diff to what you can afford and get you into a diff class. Big diff between boats at 30 or below and 40k.
I have stepped back a couple years from my 2004 boat to a 2002 boat just for the additional size and 4stroke and already noticing that keeping it maintained will be a lot tougher... something like 4 bilge / macerator pumps, windlass, hydraulic steering, auto pilot.
Anyway am sure you will make a good acquisition.

580 Ramco with 90hp 20k, started out with a penn senator and an okuma 50, over the last few years have added a Penn vsw, TLD 50, and maybe a new tiagra this season. Stack of legend lures 16s & 12/4 with a few BM lures on special at the boat show. New FF and chartplotter for this year & have gone from no marlin, seen a marlin, a strike and drop, to hopefully caught a marlin, in Saltiga's neck of the woods

He lives out at White in it jigging for kingis so no problems with blue water. I have been to Rangipapa (sp?) in it with him - 40 mile from Whakatane, same from Tauranga. Got some very strange looks from the launches out there!
I think he is wanting about 32 to 35k..........
He just bought a 670 rayglass so is surpluss to requirements. It should be on Trademe. If not it will be soon. Keep searching.

Not that much but it looks alright, no mention of what kind of electronics it has though. Says fishfinder but don't know what type. Looks like a pretty good sea boat though

That seems pretty good value? I don't know much about inboards but from what I read recently the maintainance could be higher than looking after outboard?

Yeah, haven't posted it on here in case someone else takes a fancy to it. Its been on TM for almost 2 months now, I've got money coming Dec. Hope its still there then. Tempted to borrow cash and pay it back when mine comes through. It'll cost me more that way though
