anyone no what is going on down the coast or what is not going on with the blue fin.was going down last weekend but weather was  but sounds like didn't miss much.

| Oracle and Cascade are out at sea now. Weather's been crap since Friday. Oracle due back in this arvo, then heading out again with another crew so should get some intel on what's going down soon. |

Just had a convo with Matt Watson (whom is down there now) and no tuna for the 5 boats out there last night and only a couple of trawlers working well outside the trench.... it was "quite" bumpy and a bit "chilly" from all accounts good luck y'all! |

Hi Guys, Just had a reply to a information request to the Ministry of Fisheries. There is around 2-3 weeks of quota on the Hoki to be caught - weather dependent, ie good weather = 2 weeks, bad = 3 weeks.
I reckon if you are booked and get a break with the wind grab it while you can.

| yeh not sure if it will be like last year,i was working on a factory trawler down there last year and ive got video of between 20-30 bluefin swimming along each side of our boat while we were towing on a great day down there,date on camera was 5th of next month but with no hoki boats there it could be bit harder to find. |

Nice one G.D.S!! would have been a magic site to behold from an elevated position..... we (ITM FISHING SHOW) filmed some pretty outrageous topside and underwater footage of them critters....in fact our next DVD titled "Giant Tuna Adventures" should be on the shelves shortly...awesome fish!!! |

i didn't care if i had to paddle out in a canoe and catch one this year but was lucky enough to get a mate with a fishing boat in westport to take us whenever we are ready so just got to wait and see what happens with the fish and weather,was gutted to miss out last weekend

| Just got an email from a mate to say that another mate of ours got a bluefin estimated at 300 kg which they are bringing in to weigh, they also lost another one after 3 hours when a brand new rod broke. I don't know what boat they were on, but they were about 100 miles off the coast. will post some more info when I find out more. |

| in murchison now having a feed.We stayed the night on Oracle and we decided to pull the pin as the weather may not clear until monday.....60 to 70 mile out the boats are going Fish are down really deep and It's chum chum chum all night....If you do get a good shot at them you will definately catch one or 2 but other then that It'sd a very very bumpy trip...I'm heading back to wellington now and may head down again on sunday If i get a phone call....It's a bummer but that's fishing for you...trip just before us lost a bigun on the hand line....cable broke at the boat and they had 5 guys pulling on the line ...grubs up later all...will let ya know more when I get home....Oh Cherveza blew a motor |

| Just heard that my mates fish went 238 kg and 60kg line (skipper thought it was close to 300 kg), by all accounts they had that much drag on that even with two hands they couldn't pull the line off the reel and the fish was still really lively at the boat awesome stuff. It was the only one caught that night by all the boats out there. Sounds like a very quiet time down there at the moment only 3 or 4 trawlers still working and not many tuna with them. This one was caught by throwing in a hoki just behind the net as it was being pulled into the trawler. |

have heard from my mrs(she works on sealord factory trawler) that they are heading back to the trench to finish off there hoki quota along with a few other kiwi boats so hope the tuna start to really show up now

Do you know whether the spawning moratorium has already been and gone or not? Usually it is between 20th and 30th August but that doesn't correspond with what you're suggesting unless the're going to finish off their quota in the next 2 days.

just got the call so out of here tomorrow at 3am on the bluebridge ferry and then driving to westport and out from there on Cascade...a lot of fishter out there was the call I got this morning and big mothers at that... Cascade has knackered 2 of their T Curves on their last trip....something to do with the guides cracking the blanks!I'll see what I can find out and maybe get a post in before I head out on that issue.... | Yup, apparently they got eight in the end. Three biggest would have beaten the world record easily. Seven tagged with satellite tags. Josh allowed to catch the smallest one of about 250 kgs right at the end which was kept. |

yeah all well and groovy....very nicely done all involved. Anyone know which agency is sponsoring this tagging program?...bet ya bottom dollars they are going to want to see a return on their capital investment whomever it is and I doubt their MO is clipping the tickets of the recreational fishermen that ventures south! Crews and deckies that fish the Giant Black Marlin season on the GBR very very rarely give out estimates of their releases (well maybe on the tag cards) but when someone says something like "yeah we let a real nice one go today"...ya know exactly what they are saying....certainly stops a few red faces when their tagged fish gets strung up a few days later weighing less than their "estimates" awesome to hear the Northern season appears to be underway - go hard Thomastats.....I know you've been hanging out for this one!! |

before we go off on some tangent here....no one is doubting or suggesting stories are being made up.....please don't go reading 'stuff' in to 'things' that aint there or aren't at least in the original intention of someone elses posts BA....this is often what causes the "storm in a tea cup" dramas in my opinion. i think you guys are missing the point about the W/R release but then i might be wrong...... im guessing they where on a mission, like being payed to put satellite tags in, which also means the tackle might have been a bit suspect for a IGFA record.... i remember last year Koru II tagging B/F and he also said they released one close to 400kgs..... the record is now 300kgs so its sure to be broken soon or latter..... |

Maybe should have used different words there. There was probably a fair bit of multiple handling going on towards the end of the fight in order to get the sat tag in. Sixty kilo tackle. Nobody was paid for it but the anglers more than happy to see the big fish swim away with a sat tag. Being able to track where a fish you have caught travels over the next six months sounds like a lot of fun to me and very interesting.

Awesome stuff Craig and I totally agree sat tag data is very interesting and having being part of the striped marlin program I'm very interesested in results and data analysis that comes from it.....but.....it's not the anglers I'd be concerned about, it is the potentially sinister modus operandi of the program benefactor(s)....you can guranteee that they are not in it purely for the "interest" factor alone....could be completely off track here, but would be an expensive way to have some "fun".....not only is the hardware expensive but the satelitte time doesn't come free with a packet of Weetbix either. again not trying to belittle or put down anyone elses right to catch fish and have fun doing so, I'm purely concerned with whom the data will benefit in the long term. |

Great to hear the fish have turned up again. I guess they could be late like everything else this year. Good luck TS & Co! I'm green as that I'm not getting a shot this year. ON the Satellite tagging I emailed the guys who tagged them last year but didn't get a response. From memory they were from an Ivy league university in the states and had been involved in tagging GBT's in the Atlantic. I'd like to see their migration pattern as I think they may come back up the west coast vie the Mokau adn Kaipara trenches.  Cheers DA |

Kezza, not all supporters of the satellite tagging programs have sinister principles. Stewart Campbell has financed many pop-tags for blue marlin, as have other IGFA big-shots. None of them to my recollection own a longline vessel or a purse-seiner (although one cannot count the Merritt family in the same league - one half of the family building fine multi-million dollar game-boats, the other half owning one of the USA's largest long-line fleets). Of course, Stewart cannot access the data he has supported either, thank goodness. His annual forays in to the Atlantic to chase his record blue marlin are based purely on hunches, of course....... Obald - disgraceful that you should be a warm weather fisherman. Tsk tsk. Where's your flotation suit, man ? C'mon, hitch la belle bateau and shoot south. I agree Roddy...but often when it's a private businessman or company we her about it......when it's under the guise of a "University" then ya never can tell what the objectives are or who is sponsoring the tags in the first place. I'm in a much happier place "believing" that all the data generated will be going to some wealthy businessman whom has a vested interest in protecting Northern Pacific Bluefin from the evil clutches of the Tokoyo Fish Markets and will put the analysis away in the "that was fun and interesting" file....somehow I doubt it, but ya never know aye. |

Hi Grant,
Here's an update on the 2007 Blue Fin Season.
After a slow start in late July, with only few trawlers in the Hokitika trench most of the fish caught proved to be late season Southern Blue Fins, ranging in size from 80 to 180 kgs. Fishing around the trawlers was'nt producing the results of previous season and the crew of Cerveza II found that chumming up away from the trawlers produced better results with a few hook ups each trip but still a long way short of 2005 and 2006 numbers. Late last week reports from a local offshore trawler of massive shools of Pacfic Blue Fins schooling around the boat working north of Westport sent the charter boats scambling north for a look, Cerveza II departed with a group of local Greymouth anglers and George Shilligo, a marine biologist from Stamford University's Tuna Research and Conservatin Foundation, at 11pm on friday night for what proved the be the best days fishing ever. The boat arrived at the fishing grounds at 4am Saturday morning and within seconds of throwing a dead bait into the water hooked up to a good sized Pacific estimated at 220kgs, returning to the same hookup point 2 hours later produced the same result with a much bigger fish this time this fish was tagged with a PAT by GeorgeShilligo , measured and the weight calculted at 280kgs, a further 6 fish were similarly hooked up over the next 14 hours and all were tagged, DNA samples taken, measured and weights calculated before being released, including a massive 420kg fish caught by Mike Trusselou which he decided to release as he was not a member of an IGFA affilated club, thus rendering the fish ineligable for consideration as a world record, which bit clearly would have been. Good call Mike, a man can only eat so much Tuna. The 8th fish hooked at 6pm after luring around a dozen good sized tuna away from the stern of a factory ship with a berley trail of squid and Hoki, then watching them feed on chunks of Hoki pitched from the stern of Cerveza, crashing onto them and coming full body out of the water at speed, almost as much fun as hooking up to them. The last fish, caught by Josh Worthington, was boated after 55 minute battle and taken back to Westport, weighed at 238kgs and the meat divided up amonst the weary but obviously extatic clients.
So with the season at last looking like it wll produce some spectacular results we have moved Cerveza north to Westport and with a fulll list of bookings until mid September we look forward to reporting the next fish to ecilipse Andy Hamiltons IGFA ratified record of 300kgs caught from Cerveza II on the 9th September 2006.

The boys from the bay have been peeling them back Brady
10 in two days from Reel Passion.
Libertas tagged 5 and landed one of 284kg last night.
and Te Ariki Nui tagged 8 and landed one of 242kg last night, a big night by the sound of going hard on the 130's with Jason mowing them down from the helm sounds cool.
Sounds like the season has fired finally.

Met the guy tagging the giants this morning....nice guy...George Shillinger is his name and some info can be found here and he also said they pretty much travel around the whole country........ http://www.topp.org/blog/last_ditch_effort_find_bluefin - http://www.topp.org/blog/last_ditch_effort_find_bluefin ... definately going back next year but will do a 48 hour trip as 36 just don't cut it if you want to get some shut eye..our fish kept went 205 and 180 on the formula and the other 2 @ est 200 each. I caught the 180 and It took me 5 hours.....hell my 3 last year never took that long in total...LOL on sunday the fish were 40 miles south of where they were on fri/sat....one reason is that's where the better trawlers were...... Great fish, just a point though. I'm pretty sure, correct me if I'm wrong, that you don't have to be a member of IGFA or any club to claim an IGFA world record. You just have to follow the rules.
I am however very glad they let the monster 4250KG fish go. Anyone get the GPS marks? :)

 I'm guessing this happened when 1 of the crimps slipped above the swivel ( on the wind on ) and that movement was enough to pop the leader right through the armour spring..... we didn't use swivels...wind on SS thimble and crimped.....  Jason McMahons seeker 6455xxh loaded on his 205kg fish which took 2 hours  The 180 (formula weight) I caught on a sabre 6455XXH ( built in 1990 )...5 hours..... Fishing been insane the last couple of days, Lots of Monster fish
around, In 2 days we put satt tags into 12 tuna, the tag-a-giant program from
stanford uni USA is in partnership with pete saul from bluewater marine
reaserch nz and as far as I know the main purpose is for conservation
of the bluefin tuna fishery. Bevan: from the start of the charter anglers stated they wern't worried about Igfa and were just out to catch fish, they weren't members of a club either just greymouth locals looking for good time, while one angler fought the fish for the entire fight though us deckies hooked the fish up and others held the angler down in the chair, realisticly there was no way the fish could count for a record, the angler knew the size of his fish and was given the choice to tag or bag and he chose to tag. Kezza: agree with the sayn don't weigh don't say it, but since a sat tag was attached a realistic estimated had to be given, 400kgs was written on the tag form. geogre (the sat tager) has seen atlantics to 425kgs, adrain the other crewman was on cascade last year when measured out a bluefin at 350kgs and the larry the skipper who has commercially fished greymouth for 25-30years reacons it was the biggest tuna he has ever seen larger the fish they played 21hours last year. as far as I know it was just F**Kn HUGE!  |

DA.....that's me for this year mate.I had 2 trips planned but the 1st got blown out and I took 2 weeks off to fit both in.........next year 2 48 hour trips for sure.....the hoki quota will be cut then too. Stormbringer.....yeah mate both Jason and Steve Foreman were on the trip...1st WSAC members to catch a bluefin I think.Both top guys and good fisho's! Moocha,Mozz,Kezz.....thanks some interesting stuff George told me was the sat tagged fish reports them swimming in water from surface to 300 and up to 1000 he said... where we were fishing It was 300 deep with the trawlers working when last year we were in 1000 |

yeah i reckon daylight hours are not the best time to fight them either..... haven't heard from Richard and he hasn't answered any emails lately so not sure what hes up to Tom..... i remember Richard saying last year they had some whoppers around the boat in daylight and had a problem getting them to take any baits with hooks in them, this was late in the season so guess they are not to fussy at the moment but will get harder as the weeks go by...... |
