Sam Mossman caught a marlin on one a few years ago,so they must have a use.....surfcasting off the beach, casting poppers, straylining,if its cheap buy it ,if you dont like it throw it on trade me and kick its ass to the kerb...

they are a great all round work house of a reel, basically indestructable.

good poppering reel, anything you want it to be.

i still prefer shimano though.

I've got an older US made 8500 and one of the new 950ss. Both wickedly strong but I'd personally rather have the older 9500.

A 950SSm? Way better for poppering than the shim 6500, absolutely no comparisson. However, the 950 is a very large reel, the 850SSm is big enough...still, for the right price, hell, why not the larger?
The Penn Spinfishers, although not the flashest designs, are damn near bullet proof. The SSm series are also a considerable improvement over the older SS series reels, but still have that rather small spool, which is a bit of a bugger!
Anyhow, for poppering, go for the Penn, NOT the baitrunner!
Cheers, Stu.
