Shot out this arvo for a couple of hours to see if my theory of an afternoon bite might be right. The bite was hot once again much better than sat morn. Took my mate and his 7 year old boy. The kid had a ball and picked up the SP technique straight away good to see and he has the bug now too. Found a patch that were hungary double and triple hook ups to keep us entertained. Biggest fish went to smelt shad on 5/8 Jighead..... ..

Hmm - I wonder why?

Current at max for the arvo....

Bad moon rising?

Espresso I am starting to think its the current, its seems with the SP's anyway, when the current is peaking they feed hard, when the current stops its just about a waste of time having your lure in the tide. Have noticed when I am fishing alongside bait fishermen this is the only time they will outfish the SP's........................I have caught fish with full moon, strong southerly's and the only thing that seems to put them off is lack of current...

Great pics MM, The junior looks stoked. I can 2nd your theory. We had an awesome bite Friday evening, strong tidal flow. Not as hungry in the same spot the following morning not as much current

Good work Mahiman, and you have a new fishing junkie judging by the pride in that lad's eyes.

I divide the tides up into 4 parts:
- the hour each side of low tide - usually slow
- the 4 hours from an hour after low to an hour before high - good
- the hour each side of high tide - slow again
- the 4 hours from one hour after high to an hour before low - good again

Stronger tide flows are usually better.  In Auckland (Eastern side) this means high tides of 3.1 metres or greater.  Tides less than 2.7m usually mean poor fishing.

You still have to find feeding fish, and this is where local knowledge and drifting are useful.

I thought I saw you out there yesterday Mahiman (on dev/taka side)?

I only managed 5 pannies (32-40) and hit a lot more smaller fish today. One good size one lost at the boat only thinnly lip hooked.

I was struck by kingis and busted off under schools of keheru (lovely blue colour). 3.4kg is not as tuff as the 6kg I had on before (time to change back)!

Yeah snap its getting harder in the Channel the fish have shrunk in size and have only had very short bite times. Still managing a feed but might be time to change tactics. Have been seeing a lot of birdlife in close to the cliffs might be time for some shallow stuff. Be hard getting the bait and burly out again though, after an awesome run on the plastics. I am thinking out in the middle might be worth a look too. Heard there has been some action north of Tiri.

I would have to agree with you!

My next trip is fresh bloody baits on 10/0 hooks and lots of berley. Might give the softies a go as well - specially those bigger onesWink
