Was just having a look at the specs on these and apart from the 2 speed options of the TLD30 there doesnt seem to be much between the 2 reels. Oh and the TLD30 has a considerably higher max drag rating (50% more than the TLD25)
I was a bit confused by the specs provided by shimano which indicated that both reels held 350m of 24kg...is this correct?
 Was gonna grab one for LBG but if its the same capacity I may as well go for a 50wide. The only downside I see with the 50w is its weight. ------------- LedgeNZ LBG |

I just had a look at my TLD30 and it says 50lb 350yds if it is any help. Another good thing about the TLDs is that the graphite body stands up to being scratched on the rocks. |

yep 30 and 25 are almost physically the same size, and the so the spool should hold the same. THe two speed makes it a very versatial piece of kit. Buy the 30, put spectra on it with a mono to shot and then you can use it for anything. I have an internationa 30 two speed and have it rigged with mono Backing and about 100 Yards of 37 Kg top shot. I can also down size the top shot to 24 or even 15 should I so wish.
Not necessarily IGFA legal, but who cares, its the photos on your wall that count anyway.

I've got the 30 2speed for my big lbg set up and love it! But I don't have, or have ever used the tld25. So nothing to compare it to in that sense.
If I remember correctly though, the 25 has the same max drag as the 15, which I do have one of and the 30 has a hell of a lot more max drag than that. I have the 15 set for 15kg and max drag just tested at just over 9.6kg and the 30's for 24 or 37 kg but right now 24 and the max just tested at 16.7kg..... I've got mine with 24kg mono backing, 300yds of 50lb braid, then 25m of 24kg mono (for a bit of shock absorber) and then a 6m 200lb leader to swivel. But I'm one eyed here, even if I did somehow break or loose my 30 I'd only replace it with another 30! |

Make sense mate as the tld25 is rated at 22lbs max drag and TLD30 is 33lbs.
How do you find handling the braid for lbg? especially level winding under load?
I've been advised by a few different people to go for braid backing and topshot with 150m of mono and was gonna go that way

Hi JK, I use my tld30s mainly for puka fishin. For that purpose, I have about 50m of thick mono on the bottom, topped up with about 600m 80lb braid. When I need to use it for lbg, I would top shot it with about 80metres of mono. My theory is that I could replace the top shot cheaply .

I use to own a TLD25 till a Yellow Fin riped the frame off the seat with 15kg mono. Got a TLD30 and it's a lot better setup the frame has metal rods running though it and is heaps stonger and as bob said the two speed is great.

To be honest I've only just started trying out braid from the bricks this season.
Haven't really had anything really big just kings up to just under 17kg. Laying the line on hasn't been any trouble but I always wear gloves. I've found that being in such close contact to the fish I really can't give them an inch and I feel like I get more tired than some of the fish on a long fight  .
As for bust offs all of mine have been on the top shot so I cant really comment on the abrasion resistance of it. I've looked over the braid and it all looks pretty healthy after about 5 months. where did you get the specs for the reels? |

fark my boss got a 302sp and rod brand new from rebels very expensive it was at $380 seems they like to move stuff thats sat in the shop for a while.
plonker was saying about the disintergration of his 25, personally never seen it happen, and he says it was with just 15kg so makes you wonder if his was a buggered one from the strt made on a monday or a friday by a worker either wanting to go home or pissed about being there on a monday.....
my thoughts are this i hear guys now putting say 80lb braid on these reels etc, are they designed to take it?
are they then designed to handle the huge drag put on them under load of say the 80lb drag setting, JK was comparing the drags 22 and 33lb guys if you can handle that sort of dag either in a boat or especially the rocks then you da man cause i have trouble with my 80's on 12k of drag and thats in a seat.
the tld's all of them come with the reel clamps etc, strongley suggest that using them is the way to go,
it is added support for the reel in general, the only reel i have seen poo them selves have both been penn and the other a 6/0 daiwa not that i know alot about reels etc bt working in the industry a few years back was a real eye opener to reels and rods falling to pieces through no real fault of the owners, have to say that a Tiagra 80 is not infalable to pooing it self as my younger brother brought a few of them, 1st trip over the bar hooked up and the reel seized inside, what did they say when he took it back "you must have taken it apart and filled it with grease" yip he must have done, what a croc.
no reel is 100% really just some are alot better than others
the 25 for me is the bees knees have got some very good fish on them from marlin to kings and sharks, yip they get hot but what reel wont? maybe the duel with its oil bath set up inside?

BA, no worries with the 30's on 80lb (think about the construction compared to things like a big Senator or 6/0 or 9/0 reel), certainly wouldn't subject the 25 to it though.
Worked in a tackle shop in the early 90's when the tld 20's and 25's first came out, a few of them were coming back at thta stage with stripped gears. Seem to have solved that problem since then.
