Thankyou tugboat, check the contents of the albacore and you will find the same, both are feeding in the same area, find the albacore and you will find the marlin.

the ones I gutted had...like I said...balls of whitebait type transluscent fry in their guts....
PS....it is very hard to say if there where marlin in the area as well
mind you.....but I'll go with your science over my observation...
what I meant to say was that there where squid in their guts?

spoke to someone who caught and gutted a marin out of whangaroa last weekend.....full of squid.....also the albies they landed were spewing up squid
great if you ask me...have always had better results on squid coloured lures rather than the purp/black....having said that you will only catch the fish on the lures you have in the water so if you tow light coloured lures thats what you get them on and the same for dark
really starting to question if it makes a lot of difference at the end of the day
you lure makers out there must have put in the hours re colours...how important is it really

The point I'm trying to make here, and it is not science, is if you work an area that is holding albacore in a known depth that the marlin have been getting caught, you can be confident that you "may be" in the right area.
somthing to think about, if you haven't already.
somtimes you can drive away from a food source that doesn't really show on the surface ie squid.

Calypso 6, (we heard you guys on the radio) were at the cape monday evening and got sharked big time as well. Lotsa rats but got busted by a decent king on 24Kg and then sharked on another on of about 8-9Kgs. Nice very large radius bite mark. Was it you guys that got the 150Kg bronzy on Saturday (I think, or maybe sunday?) at the Cape?

It's an excellent bet, especially on the West Coast, that if there's albies, then marlin will be close by.
Why not use an albie as a livebait?

Nah bob we didnt land any sharks. we hooked one up accidently which had dined on one of our kingies it put on a good show until it tangled around a cray pot. At one stage we had 2 big sharks ripping aprt a 20 kilo king we had hooked, it was impressive but i really wanted to land that fish.

Only problem with picking a squid coloured lure is - what's a squid coloured lure?
They're remarkable animals in their own right - simply amazing!

good point Dustin....but you can narrow down the colour spectrum somewhat when you include a predator in the equation....

Sauries everywhere around Aldies/Mayor region at the moment, never seen them this prolific before.

Kaveman, if you can get the squid & saury, in the same area, you got to be in a good area "A", have found a couple of points of a degree rise in temp, the albies drop off a bit and the water quaility improves, then we start to see saury.
So if you can find that sweet spot were it all comes together.
who knows, just my observations.
we were out the other day when Jill grey was working a line four hours in where the albies were, where as we were working a warmer break past the albies, with saury and free jumpers.
we both got nil, so I don't know what the point of this is.
Any blue macs, skippys up the aldies yet.

Mangre,no blue macs at all this year,Very strange ,as they have always been around Aldies early in season. Albies everywhere from 60-90m line but patchy elsewhere. Havent seen 1 skippie yet but have heard of a few getting caught. we fished 550m east of Aldies last week and saury jumping out everywhere, got in amongst them and had a hit but didnt hook up. Fish never came back, saury seem to be everywhere from all the reports ive had. also saw 2 free jumping shortbill spearfish, never seen that before. Im told the skippies are 60 miles out east still, next trip will be out to the Rangatiras, water is looking very good out there in latest sst chart.over 23 deg so should be holding a few blues

We found blue macs in amongst kahawai schools just off penguin shoals 2 weeks ago. Havent come across any skippies. Around Mayor have noticed more sauries than usual also. Seems to still be low numbers of beakies around this area still though.
